Chainmail has been in Minecraft for over 10 years now. Why has it always been so useless? SalC1's Twitter: / realsalc1 SalC1 Discord Server: www.salc1.com/discord (New!) SalC1 Store: www.salc1.com/store
I remember in MC PE when leather was released and I swapped it for my diamond gear. Tried fighting the new endermen, let’s just say I lost the leather armor.
A friend of mine actually had an interesting idea where chainmail armor would vanish with you if you took an invisibility potion. Minecraft has already done things to give weaker armor some utility (gold armor to keep piglins away, and leather boots to walk on powdered snow). It'd be cool if they gave chainmail some innate magical property that lets it vanish with you when you're invisible.
honestly thats a great use for chainmail, was thinking something about fire protection but ig netherite already has it (i think) but idk something about how chainmail was used in other games having this fire resistance to it would be fantastic to impliment into mc, and to also buff its durabillity and armor points by a little so its not on the same level as gold armor (if you get what I mean)
We could pretend iron is conductive to invisibility effects, but that a potion’s worth is only enough for the smaller amount of iron used in a chainmail set.
i feel like using chainmail to counter against melee attacks, since chainmail in real life was made for slicing blows so we can have chainmail have more protection against melee than iron, but as strong as gold against ranged attacks
back during beta, a lot of servers would have their moderators and admins wear chainmail armor to show that they were actually staff. because back then we had no native player list.
“Chain mail armor could actually be crafted!” Man I feel old, it looks like it’s supposed to be a surprise but I already knew this from playing for 8 years
As someone who's played MC for around 10 years, it's insane to think that there are people that never knew Chainmail had a recipe. Makes me feel old honestly lmao
Yeah. I haven't even been playing for that long but I still remember all the videos showing that recipe with "HOW TO MAKE CHAINMAIL!!! (NOT CLICK BAIT)!!!"
Lol, I didn’t try to craft it in survival, so I didn’t know you can’t 😂 I only wore it when I got tons of it from upgrading my villagers, and then I understood that I can just smelt it all 😂
Honestly I like the idea of Chainmail as a status symbol, something that is crazy hard to get but if you have sets of it on armor stands it shows your dedication.
I don't find it to be very showing of status personally. If you're the kinda guy with maxed netherite, chances are, you can make maxed chainmail in about 5 or 10 minutes as well.
@@MsDestroyer900 yea I haven’t really done much on this new world yet but I can get tons on tons of chainmail from my mob farm and looting III it’d take like 10 min
I think if they made the chain recipe craft 6 chains, it would actually be a solid early game armor set. Crafting a decent armor set with only 9 iron ingots would actually be pretty useful.
@@DayFour2019 sometimes you don't find a cave right away, and only enough for a few bits for tools while you find a place to settle. Though the chain recipe sounds convoluted to me and a more intuitive way is to make it through nuggets. Getting armor is a pretty big deal esp on harder difficulties
I’ve always liked Chainmail since it is an armor that actually lets you see your skin. It has always bothered me that most of your skin is covered 95% of the time when you are playing Minecraft and I wish we’d see more armors that don’t cover up too much
I think it needs an official re- introduction to the game. Adding it as the in between for leather and iron armor would be the best placement for it, and the crafting recipe for it should just be iron nuggets in the shape of the armor piece you want. This way its less expensive than iron armor, looks good, and is most importantly OBTAINABLE.
@@traurigekatze gold tools still have their purpose for being way faster than iron, they're very good temporary tools you can use to get a job done quickly before you get diamonds
I think chainmail should have it’s own slot in the equipment slot. It alone is pretty useless, but when used with other armour it serves two purposes: - The piece of armour you are wearing on top of the mail can absorb more damage, damage is distributed evenly between the armour and the mail (10 HP of damage: 5 HP dealt to the armour / 5 HP dealt to the mail). - There’s an increase in protection against melee damage, but not against arrows or axes. As a drawback, wearing a full set of chainmail armour slightly slows your down as you are basically wearing two sets.
@@stealthbeastgaming making axes take durability faster off it? Not being able to enchant it? Making your hunger bar go down faster? Dunno I'm just throwing ideas to the wall to see what stick, chainmail may be a small boost in protection for midgame when you still don't have the capability to enchant your armor or use high end enchantment, with the downside that you are slowed down enough for either a group of vindicators or players armed with axes to be able to cut you down and its downsides being more a nuisance rather than an affordable evil when you get to late game
With the recent (ish) addition of netherite, mojang has opened the door for base armor to get bonus effects. They could easily give something like that to chainmail, like say it's a little more resistant to swords or arrows compared to other armor.
why not add "reinforced armor" where you can combine chain armor with other armor and up the damage mitigation. it would be like wearing chain under the plate armor.
I think the chainmail armor’s recipe should using the iron nugget. It costs less than the iron armor so it’s weaker. It might still be useful for people who can’t get enough iron to make a full set of armor but just need it to make it through one night.
@@sircuffington that’s actually a really good idea for a concept, since it would have to be far weaker than iron to be balanced, if it only required iron nuggets
I remember in the Beta 1.7/1.8 era, we had a mod to dye chainmail armour (as well as leather). It was popular at the time to use either as custom coloured clothing online. Which I assume is still used as a RP element playing Minecraft online today.
I think it would be really cool if they added something unique to make chainmail armor more interesting. Why not give it insane durability to make up for it being weaker than Iron? On the other hand you could make it so it's really good against melee attacks, maybe even comparable to diamond, but not against projectiles. Also I think the fact that it's not craftable makes it more special. They should keep it that way.
Imagine having chainmail work in some other way, like being able to wear it under normal armor, like actual chainmail was sometimes used, but keep it's rare charm by not having a crafting recipe
Iirc at one point it was planned to be able to combine chainmail with leader armor to create a new and strong armor type. If there was any time to revisit that idea, it’d be now that we also got netherite armor the works in a similar way
Back in 2015 there was a myth/urban legend that it completely deflected arrows, they just bounced off. It was hard enough to get the armor that really no one ever tested the theory. I still think it's a cool idea.
The point here is very simple. The Chain Mail never fited well in the Minecraft gameplay, but it acually fits perfect with the lore! A strange armor, that you cant craft and have low defensive points, but that clearly exists in the minecraft world. Why? Where it comes from? Who created this armor? and that is the prove that we (or steve) dont knowhow to craft, every iten, and what is happening in this world. The chain mail armor had some mysterious history behind it, and its part of the lore, the history of the people that came before us. And for me, a great way to reinsert the chainmail armor in the context is simply creating a advancement that tell us a little more about its origin. For example: Steps In The Past (Advancement Name) - Wear an Entire Chain Mail Armor (Advancement) OR; In Someone Else's Skin (Advancement Name) - Wear an Entire Chain Mail Armor. It sounds great to make the existance of chain mail, a interest part of minecraft history.
Oh my God, that inventory editor just tossed me into a full nostalgiq trip. Me and my buddies watching hours of Rendog play Tekkit, and then going to make our own tekkit survival island. Tekkit's UI looked identical to that back in the day
@@icyiyes4846 you can craft an entire IRON chest plate with one iron block. You could craft multiple SETS of chainmail with one iron block if you’re going by the iron nuggets thing.
i feel like they should update chainmail as a armor thats good against swords, but bad against axes, like real life, where it is great against slashes, but bad against blunt attacks. i think a 70% reduction would be good for swords. so unless the other player has a axe, they can only do around 4-5 damage. this would give it a purpose at least, and give a cool spin on it
My idea would be to make it obtainable with a craft you've mentioned in the end of the video, and make it slightly better than iron armor in terms of protection, but worse in terms of durability. That would at least give some option. This wouldn't really make regular iron armor powercrept, because for an exchange of only slightly better protection you would need to use much more iron mostly because you would need to change it more frequently, and also use a little bit more for a craft.
They should make chainmail craftable out of nuggets so you can make a full set with just 3 iron bars. Furthermore, you should be able to add a banner over chainmail and have a wearable banner/armor.
I remember using it in the hunger games a while ago. It was on my ps3 which i still have. I just don’t play much because lots of people started cheating on there. No idea how still. I just remember most of them had egirl skins which i thought you could only get by jailbreaking the game. But then online play isn’t a thing.. So im still confused about it lol.
Until I watched this video i thought they added a crafting recipe for chainmeal armor using iron nuggets apart from just using fire.. But i guess they didn’t. Didn’t bother checking because i never found it useful though
I can imagine a use for chainmail where it protects from sword damage a little and can be worn under your normal armor, and the fact that using chains to craft chainmail would be more expensive actually makes sense considering its very tedious and difficult to make chainmail in real life without some automated machines.
They can add unique buffs and debuffs for armors: - Leather: already has one that prevents you from falling in powdered snow but it could also serve as a permanent and invisible feather falling 1 Gold: Gain more XP with each armor piece. Chainmail: Can be used as a secondary armor, giving you resistance to sword attacks but axe damage does the same damage, primary armor takes 10% more durability damage. Iron: Chance to ignore projectile damage (repelling it off the wearer) if full set is worn. Projectile protection increases said chance) Diamond: Less damage from kinetic force (flying with elytra into walls) Netherite: Resistance to fire but not lava.
@@_ikako_ if you look at the old textures or turn your graphics from "fancy" to "fast", leaves are actually not transparent. Hence why that could be true :D
I think adding the recipe would remove the point of chainmail, the satisfaction of finally getting full chainmail would be completely gone. Since it would be so easy to get, you would get it, say that was easy and move on with your day and easily overclass that armor. If you got it from, lets say, a Woodland Mansion, which is really tough to find, you got a good reward and that armor would actually feel special.
I think the main use was the role play element. It is a common trope in many fantasy books that there is a chain mail which is made in some magical way, sometimes it is cursed as well. It's almost always chain mail, not plate, at least in books (I don't know about video games or movies). Making chain mail out of fire fits in perfectly with this trope, and if I were to guess, early Minecraft which experimented with different approaches and themes in the game, probably experimented with this as well.
Honestly, an accurate representation of real life chainmail armor, would be if it had some sort of "anti-sharpness" feature, because the way it is made is for the purpose of avoiding slashes, however, it is still pretty easy to stab
I meant it as specifically reducing the damage taken my sharpness enchantments while also reducing the normal amount for being armor I saw the sweeping edge comment and I think it could be a good idea, too
I’d like to think there was an ancient civilization who knew how to make chain mail armor and it got wiped out and those armor pieces are like artificts, would make sense considering they’re always almost broken
@@gplgs4640 maybe villagers traded with the ancient society in their history and learned how to make it? Maybe they're an offshoot of the ancient society and that explains why they can be converted into zombies but still look different.
@@Slippy_G08 True. The game has slowly been losing more and more of the stuff that you actually have to work to get. Soon you'll be able to craft mooshrooms.
In an early release version (around 1.2 - 1.3) I remember finding a fire item on the ground in a plains biome near my house after some lightning struck. I have no idea if there is a theoretical way to intentionally cause the fire item to drop or how rare such a bug occurring is, but child me then went out and tried to look around during lightning storms to see if I could find more fire to be able to craft chainmail armour. I never found a fire item again though.
there use to be a glitch where if you broke a flaming block the fire item would have a chance to drop. The best video I've ever seen demonstrating this in in the yogscast shadow of israphel series when lewis burns down their base
it would be cool if you could use chains to make reinforced iron armor, as kind of a nod to both in-game chainmail, and the actual realworld application of chainmail
I always felt that chainmail should have been an upgraded to regular armor. By combining your plate armor and chainmail, you could make a fully enclosed suit of armor that adds more protection. Plus I always thought it would be cool to see the chain texture behind the plate armor.
I remember chainmail armor having a very important use, specifically in older versions of MODDED Minecraft. In Tinkers' Construct, steel used to exist as a very rare alloy, and was only obtainable by melting down full-durability chainmail armor in a smeltery. And while it was still very difficult to obtain, another mod, Mo' Creatures, added some mobs that dropped fire as an item when killed. All put together, you could grind these mobs for fire, properly craft chainmail armor, and melt it down for steel. I don't think steel was that much better than iron, and there were a lot of better alloys to use, but I still have fond memories of slowly collecting steel blocks just for the fun of it.
I think itd be a cool feature to be able to stack chainmail on top of leather armor for some kind of bonus effect unavailable to other armors. When chainmail was prevalent, as I understand it, wearers would also wear padding under it to soften the blows against the armor, which is where I get the leather idea from.
Idea: Chainmail is made out of chains, which are expensive in Minecraft terms, but it has the ability to go under armor, as it did in real life, so it’s hard to get but worth the effort. That’s what they should do with it
@@alexg9601 the pvp community is the worst part of minecraft, they're constantly complaining, get angry at new updates, and think they're superior and above everyone else
@@se4576 The reason I said both, Under and Over, is because you would be more apt to wear chainmail over leather armor. While with other armors; netherite, diamond, gold, and iron, the chainmail would be worn under. Come to think of it! Since Mojang keeps adding more and more rpg elements in the game, they should start giving armor pros and cons. Example: Leather armor (without chainmail) Pro: makes you run faster, and uses less hunger bars, while running. Cons: minimal defense, can't protect against arrows. Come to think about, it would be better off as a mod rather than being a part of an update, as it would most likely strike a controversy within the fandom (e.g. the combat update).
I always thought it would be cool if they made it so if you combined chainmail armour with leather armour you would get padded chainmail which would take it to a status just above what chainmail normally is or maybe add a hidden bonus that arrows do less damage or something
don't feel sad, chainmail armor, he didn't say *you* were useless, he said your *history* was useless, don't get me wrong, you are still useless, he just didn't say it, probably because everyone already know that, so cheer up :D
I think in some time on the age of knight and such, chainmail is used inside while iron outside, so double armor, might be useful if there's a possibility of it
Chain, ail is actually used to protect from slashes so basically your trading protection for slash that sometimes doesn’t trigger and plus nobody uses swords anymore (ok maybe some people but not all people)
@Lance Dela Cruz well thanks for the info, feel like I've seen chainmail on the inside while iron armor in the outside somewhere though, i may be wrong
They need to make it so you can craft chain armor with iron nuggets or chains, then combine chain and leather armor to make something comparable to iron armor, but you can dye it. The main drawback could be that they would be less convenient to make for the sake of having decent custom armor.
If I were to make a crafting recipe for chainmail armor I’d make it with chains, but change the crafting recipe of chains to make 3 chains instead of 1
It'd probably make sense to make chainmail made out of iron nuggets, so you need just a few bars to make it, and it would make sense it providing less protection than fullplate
I don’t know if my memory has failed me or I just remember this incorrectly, but I swear I have memories of being on servers in 1.8 and chain mail was very common but the texture for one update for a while was the texture of oak leaves
That's kind of how I felt when making this video. But when I asked people about the topic, a lot of them for some reason didn't know. Hence why I made the video.
I once played on a factions server where the starter kit used to have chainmail armor, when I had diamond armor in the pvp area nobody got close and they kept running away, so I hypermaxed a chainmail set and got so many kills.
@@ryderlahrs3162 I guess so but I feel like it would also ruin it. The only reason anyone wants chainmail is because it isn’t craftable not because they actually have a use for it. No one would want it if it was craftable because Iron armor would just be the better way to go
Well, in my opinion chainmail armor should have it's own recipe and should be crafted with iron nuggets. This would be useful for people who need armor but has not enough materials for iron armor
I think chainmail is what minecraft needs more of actually. Something that you cant make yourself, incentivizing exploration. Its Minecraft’s secret 3rd mega-mechanic, the first two being mining and crafting obviously.
It would be cool if you could make chain versions all the different types of metal armor, and if they split damage types between piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning. That way the different armor types could protect better against different attack types. I know that there are protection enchantments for this, but I feel as though you can build different types of armor with different enchantments that are not used as often this way.
