The Usual Suspects is a flat-out chess match between Agent Kujan and Verbal Kint. It’s a mystery, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in an enigma. Verbal’s improvised story in the police interrogation was so brilliant that you have to question the reality of everything you saw in the movie. It’s an amazing film which I’ve seen numerous times, I see something I didn’t notice before every time I see it. Great reaction, folks.

The Clues: One is Verbal's relative position on the night of the attack. He is hiding behind a stack of material on the dock. When Hockney is killed, Verbal would have been the closest person to him. In his testimony, shown in flashback, Verbal supposedly takes cover behind some large spools of rope on the dock as he observes Soze on the boat. However, when the camera zooms in on this area from the opposite side after the explosion, no one is seen peering through the ropes. In the opening scene, we see Keyser Söze look at a gold pocket watch and produce a gold cigarette lighter. Later, in the scene where the gang threatens Kobayashi, we see Verbal wearing a similar watch. He also collects this watch, along with a gold cigarette lighter, as he leaves the police station, despite having earlier demonstrated his inability to use a similar lighter during his questioning. In the interrogation, Verbal comments that when he gets dehydrated his urine becomes thick and lumpy due to a kidney condition. In the opening scene when Keyser Söze urinates on the fire, his urine is thick and lumpy. When Agent Kujan begins to suggest that Keaton might be the one behind the hit on the docks, Verbal can be seen starting to smile. When Kujan comes around from behind Verbal and looks him in the face, the smile disappears, and Verbal continues to pretend loyalty to Keaton. During the interrogation throughout the movie, although it is easy to miss upon a first viewing, Verbal is seen glancing for a second or two away from Kujan or over Kujan's shoulder at the wall behind him in full view of wanted posters and advertisement flyers of names as Verbal is clearly making up the names of the mysterious associates and contacts such as "Redfoot" and "Kobayashi" when Kujan's questioning becomes more intense as it revealed that Verbal Kint is making up (on the spur-of-the-moment) aliases of his co-conspirators as he goes along. Keyser Söze is described by Verbal as being of mixed Turkish/German heritage. "Söze" is Turkish for "talks too much", or "verbal". "Keyser" sounds like the German word "Kaiser", meaning "emperor", while "Kint" sounds like "king." Director Bryan Singer has referred to the name as essentially meaning "The king that talks too much." Finally, one might simply recognize that when Söze whispers, "How ya doin' Keaton?", at the start of the film, the voice really is that of Verbal/Kevin Spacey. After being thrown on the ground Verbal slips, "I did kill Keaton," though Kujan is shouting too loud to hear, and Verbal is able to correct himself by saying "I did see Keaton get shot." Also, when they are listening to the men before the attack on the boat Keaton speculates that they are speaking Russian, Verbal correctly identifies the language as Hungarian, something Soze would obviously know. Also is the whole story made up? The answer is both yes and no. Verbal tells Kujan the story as if he was simply Verbal Kint and not Keyser Söze. Verbal tells Kujan that it was his plan to rob the corrupt police officers without killing anybody. Then they fenced the goods to Redfoot, who then offered them the next job of robbing Saul Berg, which was set up by Kobayashi, etc...., which finally led to the events at the end of the film, leaving Verbal the only survivor. When pushed by Kujan, Verbal is adamant that Dean Keaton was his friend and that he wasn't the mastermind behind all the events. When pushed harder by Kujan and given all the facts, Verbal breaks down and admits that they all followed Keaton from the beginning, and that he planned and executed everything. At the very least, the names of those involved, such as Redfoot the fence and Kobayashi the lawyer, were clearly invented by Verbal on the spot (to cover up the real names of his co-conspirators), and his descriptions of where he was when the others got killed during the attack on the boat all appear to be untrue. However, we see that the person who he referred to as "Kobayashi" was real, as he picks Verbal up at the end. So it's likely that most of the events that happened were true, but certain aspects may have been fabricated or several of the names changed in order to keep Kujan from being able to trace anyone who had actually been involved with Verbal, thus preserving Söze's identity. For example, the incident when "Kobayashi" meets with the five of them, gives them their police files, and gives them the assignment of robbing the ship of the supposed cocaine and money, was likely true. In addition, the robbery of Saul Berg and the New York's Finest Taxi Service, and the fact that all five men were rounded up by the police for a lineup, were certainly true, as such facts could be easily confirmed with a few calls to the LAPD and the NYPD. It should also be noted that one of the keys to lying well is to stick as closely to the truth as possible. In this case, it's likely that many of the broad outlines of the story which Verbal told are true... while certain aspects and names of other people in the story were untrue.

One of my favorite movies. Verbal mixed truth and lies to misdirect the audience and police. He did round up the usual suspects as a means to recruit his team. He obviously convinced his 'team' to take huge risks of raiding that ship, but we really don't know what went down up until that point. He could have used his associate (Kobayoshi) to influence everyone as he said, but we don't know for sure. Verbal said in the police station that police often look for the simplest explanation and never consider any mastermind. Once Verbal saw Agent Kuyon was fixated on Ketan he molded the story in that direction. A really good movie. A very good heist movie with suspense and humor is Art of the Steal (2013).

Almost nothing about this story is true. We don't actually know how the hit really came about or went down. Verbal only took what cops already knew, spun a completely fabricated story to explain it "from his perspective", and let the cops fill in the blanks. To this day it's one of the best written crime dramas ever. Even if you had a hunch Verbal was Soze, you couldn't be sure, and the closer the movie was to its big finale, the more doubts it planted in your mind, until you were so confused you doubted yourself if you really thought Verbal was Soze. Brilliant move from start to finish.

At 25:40, basically, this whole movie was a giant stall for time. The truth is that Kyzer Soskey (Spelling?) was in the police station. So he had his lawyer pull some up on high police connections to get him full immunity to a simple weapons charge. Then the Lawyer, gets done up in makeup with a special team of professional doctors and claims he doesn't speak English. No one looks at the lawyer's face, because it's half burned up, and it's believed he'll die soon. So while the lawyer stalls, pretending to be an eye witnes, Kyzer makes up a tale that connects all the actual events, in such a way that it all points to someone else that he knows the cops desperately wants to put away. He makes up the names of unimportant people, but plugs up all the loose ends, letting the detective draw his own conclusions. TRULY, I think the only time Verbal screws up, but the cop doesn't catch it. The cop calls Verbal stupid, and Verbal smiles, because he knows he's got the cop on the hook now. It's the only time Verbal's mask slips at all. He runs out the clock until he can post bail. By that time the "Lawyer/witnes" has "Died". They move his body to the morgue, Which like most morgues, has a back door/drop off point, for messier cadavers. The lawyer gets up, strips off the makeup, and drives over to meet Kyzer just outside the precinct, they drive off. And Kyzer escapes.

The famous plot twist at the end, actually negates the entire mystery at the center of the story, of who is Keyser Soze, it negates the entire story, really. (If the boat 'heist' was an elaborate ruse to kill the one guy who could ID Soze, why hang around long enough to get caught by the cops? Furthermore, spend a few more hours in interrogation, WITH TOTAL IMMUNITY, which negated him having to tell a 'story' in the first place. A story that makes all the events in the film, possibly not real,, while unbeknownst to him a survivor accurately identifies him in a sketch. Had the cop held him for just 1 minute more, he'd be toast. A man as careful as the legendary Soze, would never chance it.) But,............... the script is so much fun, the wall-to-wall brilliant performances of Spacey, and Del Toro in particular. Add breathless pacing, the tenseness, and above all the MYSTERY and it easily overrides, and allows you to forgive the hole-ridden plot twist. This movie is super fun.

You can interpret this movie different ways. My theory is Verbal is NOT Soze but he uses the legend of Soze. As was said earlier Soze is a ghost story. My idea is that both Verbal and the man playing Kobayashi are long con artists. It is stated earlier in the movie that Verbal is a con artist.

Based on what you've reacted to I think you're gonna like Mission Impossible (1996, the first one). I love Braveheart n Hacksaw Ridge and would like you to react to them but they might not be up your alley.

Wrist watch... In the opening scenes, we see the mystery man looking at that watch... Then again, at the police station, we see that watch. Then he picks it up and puts it on his hand... Also, if you like this kind of twists in the end, "Shutter Island" has two of them... One is somewhat predictable, but the final one...

Kaiser Soze = King of Talk Kent is Old English for king. So Verbal(talkative) Kent told the investigator who he was at the begining of the movie. Cool, huh?

I don't think verbal was actually soze. I think it's more likely Kobayashi is the real soze and verbal was a lieutenant. The big guy wouldn't have to go in personally and certainly wouldn't want to stick around for the cops to arrest him especially if the whole point is to remain unrecognizable. I mean now several cops can identify him and they have a sketch. I imagine he is smarter than that.

@@EricSarahReact Actually, if you slow down the scene where Keaton is shown in the coat and hat, and Kujan says he was Keyser Soze, for one frame, it's Kevin Spacey in the outfit holding the gun!

SPOILERS Excellent guess. 🙌🏻 Unrelated, I wonder what Keaton was actually like lol. Of course it’s fiction, so who knows! XD I would assume he appeared more compassionate than he was in real life since “Verbal” was making up a whole fan fiction about his persona admiring him. Lol.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!! Even Gabriel Byrne (Keaton) thought that he was Soze and got into a fight with one of the filmmakers during a screening! Decades later, it's still a trip, even if Spacey gives it a cringe vibe once in a while.

From what I can tell most of what he said was true except for a few names and the random comments about his past. He changed the names to protect his accomplices and he mentioned random past memories to make himself seem less like a mysterious stranger while making his Verbal character more believable as the man who talks too much. I believe most of the groups adventure actually happened and he became Verbal to make sure they got the job done. When they did he killed them. This is how he knew everything about them. He's always on the inside.

Only things he needed to be truthful about are the verified facts. The arrests, the lineup, possibly the "taxi service" robbery. The rest? Who knows.

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist." Very few see it coming and, out of those reactors, a couple are shocked they were right. As an aside, I keep an eye on the "First Time Watching" search terms here on RU-vid. Keep those words in the title of your videos so I can find them. Fun Fact: In an interview, Kevin Spacey revealed that Bryan Singer managed to convince every one of the major actors that they were Keyser Soze. When first screened for the company of actors, Gabriel Byrne was so stunned when he found that he wasn't Keyser Soze that he stormed off into the parking lot and argued with Singer for a half hour.

If you go back and watch the scene where he's giving the back story of Soze (himself) it is the one part of the film where it kind of gives it up. Look at the emotion on Spacey's face. He's almost shaking. He's reliving an event, he's not telling the story of someone he had just heard about. It was his own back story.
