Was really interested to hear indigenous perspectives on this! Wondered what your thoughts were on the use of the war bonnet? I wrote an essay last term about indigenous representation in photography through history so began to question the motive behind Peter's work (not necessarily negatively!) But just thinking how the western projection and ideologies might be present here, constructing an image that has been made many times before- would love to know your thoughts if you had any!

Peter ... you captured the ethos of the American West in these photos. The vastness that defies "near" and "far," the "emptiness" of a land teeming with life, the merge between heavens and earth, and the dignity and pride of its earliest peoples. As a 7th generation daughter of said West, you touched my soul. Your fluency in gear, switching between film, digital, still, video ... epic. Thank you, for all you do.

As a true descendant, you would know that this depiction is overused and tiresome. You’re probably a colonized descendant (if you are truly a descendant)
@hellabiz4289
@hellabiz4289 Год назад
I wrote I am a descendant of the "American West"; you are reading something else into that. Sorry you feel the legacy and tradition of a people is "overused" and "tiresome" for being depicted in a manner they feel honors their present as well as their past. Why would you also want to cut them off from how they choose to portray, and then share, their images? Somehow I doubt Peter forced them into posing, let alone selected the manner of dress. @@HAlariousInc
@HAlariousInc
@HAlariousInc 11 месяцев назад
@@phillipbanes5484 Never said there was an issue with being a colonized descendant. It’s obvious that colonization will always exist. I simply state it as a way of understanding this situation. From a colonized descendant perspective, this is non-issue and can be seen as a celebration of the history and culture. However in this instance, Peter McKinnon, a person who has no genuine ties to the culture, shapes his vision to represent the extensive culture and rich history of it. This, of course, is acceptable…but its the way he goes about it that’s wrong. McKinnon, who has a very large following, has a responsibility to express a fair understanding and demonstration of the culture and not perpetuate common tropes often associated with it. Biggest red flag is the headdress…like this is it? This is the only story you can tell? What about the actual truth? The hardships of reality? Not just glorifying indigenous culture that stemmed from ideas that have been rooted by colonizers from the early days of media? You don’t just put someone in a headdress so you can get your instagram photos and make a youtube documentary

Peter, your new southwestern style is on point! Well done, dude. I work in the film industry here in New Mexico and two years ago I finally made my way into the camera union! I was a portrait photographer for over 20 years, like you shooting weddings on film and learning what it was like to run a photography studio from my parents. My mom started her studio in 1980! However, with the advancement in digital I started to see that perhaps having a studio like my parents wasn't going to be an option to withstand a career so in 2014 I closed the studio and headed west to New Mexico. I found my way into the film industry as a PA and worked my way into CAMERA. Local 600 ICG and I am proud member. You have inspired me since 2019 and during covid your photo challenges were so fun to keep me creating. I love image making! I love people!! Several years ago, I too got back into shooting film! It is humbling to say the least. :) Keep being you and rocking those cool sweaters! Come to New. Mexico sometime. :)

I feel I’ve always know the difference between taking and making photographs. I think we all do in our souls. We unconsciously dance between what we feel we have to do and what we want to do. What our clients what and what we want. Maybe we get close, touching our souls with a taster from time to time. Today the energies swirled in the right way hearing your words. Making, through whichever way I feel is best, is a craving I’ve yet to fulfil in any satisfying way. It could be shooting film, a genre of stories, a subject, it doesn’t matter what it is, what matters is the conscious making of it. It’s a beautiful thing. Cheers Peter

I’m an IATSE member who left the Navajo reservation to work in the film industry. Monument Valley is on the Navajo Reservation and the headdress and clothing isn’t and was never apart of Navajo culture. I don’t know if this is an actor or background person flown out for this photo shoot. It’s an inaccurate portrayal of the local Navajo indigenous people; stereotypical to how john ford portrayed natives in films.

I’ve been a subscriber since forever but truly I am now appreciating your work and videos now more than ever. I think your videos were the cutting edge fast paced to me back in the day but now in the world of short attention spans you allow your movies to breathe. I appreciate that a lot.

It felt like a video worth to watch on the 4k 65inch tv instead of on the phone, and it totally is

I’ve been shooting film since 2019 and I wonder why I keep going back to it. I love how you talked about it at the end, it connects you to the craft. I told me wife just yesterday, it just feels like you’re making art as opposed to just taking photos. I love it.

I've started learning how to take photos when I stumbled on your RU-vid, back in 2018. I've learnt so much from you and Matti Haapoja. And now I've recently been on a film as a B cam operator. Everything I've learnt are from you. And just wanted to say how much you and your vids have impacted my life. I also love how you are bringing lite to my people. As an Native American person who is living in Australia I love seeing this. Thank you.

Love this. I, too have been to some of those spots...I wish everyone in the country could see the incredible beauty of some of the least populated parts of our country.

Pete, congrats on this video, my man. I've been following your content since the start of my photography journey, about 7 years ago. For the first time a youtube video gave me chills. I've been in the process of reworking my approach to photography after a bad burnout, and this is exactly the inspiration I needed. Thank you Pete.

We live in the Sedona area of AZ and we know exactly what Peter means when he says the background is pretty easy on the eyes. We've been living here for a little over two years and the views never get old! However, it does get damn hot in the summers here. :D
