Most of the time, I didn't like John. He was a traitor to Elena & the Salvatore Brothers & even a danger to them. But that letter was incredible. I felt really sorry that he died, but at least he did the right thing. He gave his live to her daughter. To save her. It's one of my favourite scenes, so I type the letter too.
Elena,
It's no easy task being an ordinary parent to an extrordinary child. I failed in that task. And because of my prejudices, I failed you. I am haunted by how things might have turned out differently if I had been more willing to hear your side of things. For me it's the end. For you, a chance to grow old and someday do better with your own child than I did with mine. It's for that child that I give you my ring. I don't ask for your forgiveness or for you to forget. This scene and the final scene always makes me cry and I wasn't even a fan of John, but giving his life so Elena could live is the ultimate sacrifice and so in the end I guess I did like him.

Jenna's death and this letter. Those two times are the most I've ever cried in the three seasons of the show. (With the exception of Klaus' death of course.)

1:28 the foreshadowing is real. "Whenever you're reading this as a human or a vampire, I love you all the same... as I've always loved you" **shows Damon on the screen over these words**

I was peeved they killed John. He would have been an interesting character to watch develop. And this letter....wow....if he had been half this awesome when he was alive he and Elena probably could have recounciled. Geez. Here's to hoping we get to see him as a ghost!

I started out hating John, but only after his death did I respect him. He was a sucky person, but he really was just trying to be a good dad. He was all Elena had left and his death was still heartbreaking g.

He only did what he thought was right and while yes it was misguided, he accepted his faults and made up for it which doesn’t make him a bad person at all just a person who was blinded by hate he had for vampires because of what vampirism did to the woman he loved. He just wanted to protect his daughter from the same fate. He made some mistakes but all humans make mistakes that’s what makes us human.

does anyone else think john deserved better like the only reason he hated vampires was because he fell in love with isobel who turned into a monster bc of it and all he wanted to do was protect elena from being attacked from them. i think he was a good person he just should’ve been there for elena more.

i like John since the beginning.He wasn't the perfect father but i now that he was doing it to protect Elena.This Letter was really Sad and i cried so hard everytime i see it.I hope we get to see John again! It would be awesome to see him reacting to everyine of Elenas choice (Vampire,Damon ect.).I would like to see too how Elena reacts to him after all whats happen. (I was really suprise to see him again at Once Upon a Time.I was like "Guys,loo,its John Gilbert!) (Sorry for my bad english)

This letter is everything John could've had that Liz got. She loves Caroline either way, and she became friends with Damon. She even had him do her eulogy. John could've had more time with his daughter had he and Damon more time to accept eachother. "I'm fine with her either way, brother." And it's mostly Damon who gets scenes with him. This letter is why. "You don't have to love me like this." Stefan was the wrong brother for it.

It's not fair. The first time I saw this, I bawled for hours and hours. I can't watch it again without crying just a little. It's stupid and unrealistic, but why can a fictional character's ass hole father love her more than mine loves me?

@CrystalOfJune listen to me when i say that i know how you feel. i am 32 years old now and a mother myself. my daughter was diagnosed with autism when she was 18 months old and her father left because he did not want to be a part of a child life. My father was an alcoholic that beat the hell out of me. one day i beat him back and proved i was stronger than him and he realized that. any boy can make a baby. it takes a man to be there and be a father.

I feel like many people can’t see his point of view as a parent and someone who lost a person he loved because she was turned into a vicious monster. He only did what he thought was right and while yes it was misguided but he did what he thought was right. When he realized he was wrong, he accepted his faults and made up for it that doesn’t make him a bad person at all just someone who was blinded by hate because of what vampirism did to the woman he loved and wanted to protect his daughter from the same fate. He had made some mistakes, all humans make mistakes

a lot of people didn't like john coz they followed elena and damon in hating him how could you not like john always spoke with a calm voice helped get rid of so many evil vampires rightly hated damon, and actually was alright with stefan, no matter how many times he said he doesn't like elena having a vampire bf knew about everyone and made them mad, which made me like him even more. like the scene of alaric and damon walking up to him in season 1 🤣he proper made them back down 😭 getting killed by damon and coming back coz of the ring this guy was so bad@ss and he ended it all of by sacrificing himself to save elena from becoming a vampire all he wanted to do was keep elena safe

I actually liked him and thought the way Elena didn't want to be his "daughter" in that one scene was so cruel and bratty of her John imo is just misunderstood and cus the story is in the pov of the vampires he's shown as the "bad guy"

I always felt like he was more of Delena fan 😂. Damon and him seemed to have a like/respect hate relationship. We don’t see Stefan or Matt interacting with John very much

His daughter, Elena. She’s the truest love he has felt for anyone besides his brother. So not romantic true love but familial true love kind. He loved Isobel when she was human but when she turned into a vampire she was a completely different person, so not his true love
