The Varsity Drag dance - from Good News with Penny Singleton. Dances staged by Sammy Lee.
"Down on your heels and up on your toes" was the thing to do in the hit song for the Varsity Drag. Donald Tomkins Donald Tomkins is credited with introducing the Varsity Drag in the early 1920s to the public. The danced is based around the Collegiate dances of that era.

Ms. Singleton seen here was billed in this movie as Dorothy McNutley, her real name. She eventually married someone name Singleton and changed her first name to Penny. She would go on to star in the Blondie series from Columbia Pictures with Arthur Lake as Dagwood. The series ran from 1938 to 1951. In 1962, Ms. Singleton would do the voice of Jane Jetson in The Jetsons.

These pre-code have a lot of energy, surprise & naughtiness - along with strong female roles.

I cannot believe that this footage was produced in 1930 or 94 years ago. A singer and dancers are so animated that I could not think all of them are already gone. (Probably.)

The midget that jumps out of the trash bin is the famous Harry Earles- (munchkin from The Wizard of Oz ) (and The Greatest Show on Earth). He’s uncredited in the movie.

If this is in the TCM archive, why isn't it shown? Pre-code naughty fun (the kissing co-eds), Harry Earles emerging from a wastebasket with no explanation, lots of energetic dancing. The way the camera moves and soars put lie to the tale that the camera absolutely had to be stationary. Makes the June Allyson version seem tame by comparison. 2:25 I swear with her hair like that, the blonde dancer looks like Baby Jane Hudson!

Thank you for this. Just one very minor correction: line 4 is 'why should a Sheik learn how to speak Latin and Greek badly' In the '20s, 'Sheik' was a term used for a cute high-school or college-age boy, while 'Sheba' was the equivalent for a girl. This derived from the popular movies 'The Sheik' and 'Son of the Sheik' starring Rudolph Valentino.

I believe the young woman is Vera Marshe (billed here as Vera Marsh). She was active in movies and TV until 1966 and died in 1984. Can't seem to find who the young man is, but he's terrific!

The legs of American women 90 years ago are still beautiful today. There is a beauty that is almost the same as the current woman. Still, it's a fun musical number. I hope the full version of this movie is found somewhere.

Are Penny and Bessie wearing a legging of some type? Guys wearing bell bottom trousers?
@gusalexandrakis5151
@gusalexandrakis5151 6 месяцев назад
@@Terry-te1ij I don't think the women are wearing stockings at all (in 1930, they would've been made of silk and either held up with garters or rolled just below the knee for dancing). Here, they just seem to be wearing bobby (ankle) socks. And yes, bell bottoms were part of the 'collegiate look' for young men from the late 1920s to about 1935

That version has its strengths - Mel Torme is one - but it has been mixed too much with a "40's" era. Good News was a Twenties musical. They didn't know what to do with the costuming (Made me crazy - they couldn't put bobs on the women or do real Charlestons!) And they put forties dresses on everyone with no drop waists. The men's costumes fared better. This, of course, had a real twenties feel. You can't expect forties' production values in a 1930 movie. This was, I think, one of the top musicals in the twenties. A shame we have no complete, well-produced musical. I'm sure they did their best, but they didn't even save the entire thing.
