In the midst of WWII, Catholics looked to the pope to guide them. Hitler had already begun secretly launching his plan to exterminate the Jews of Europe. Secretly, that is, to most- except Pope Pius XII. The pope remained silent whilst the rest of the world awaited any kind of grand gesture or speech condemning Hitler’s atrocities.
He chose to keep quiet in the face of the crimes committed by the Nazis throughout Europe, crimes that even took place below the Pope’s own windows, like the 1943 liquidation of the Jewish Ghetto in Rome, to which the pope made no official reaction.
At first glance, Nazism and Catholicism are diametrically opposed. The Vatican even seems an institution beyond all suspicion. The Church, however, faced in turn with the rise of Nazism, the Second World War and the extermination of Jews, will play an ambiguous - at times unholy - role. Several men of the Church, priests and bishops, being fervent admirers of Hitler, even fell into complicity…

All of this information has been around in the public domain for decades. Too bad more people are not informed about world history.

Regarding the pope's conundrum of having to side with fascism as the best way to oppose communism CS Lewis wrote - He (the devil) always sends errors into the world in pairs--pairs of opposites... He relies on your extra dislike of one to draw you gradually into the opposite one. But do not let us be fooled. We have to keep our eyes on the goal and go straight through between both errors.

Remember many catholic priests were sent to concentration camps and nuns risked their life...One of the most famous good Samaritan Schindler was a catholic....he was given the title 'Most Honorable Gentile' by Israel 🇮🇱

Pius XII's 1942 Christmas address via Vatican Radio voiced concern at human rights abuses and the murder of innocents based on race. The majority of the speech spoke generally about human rights and civil society; at the very end of the speech, Pius XII mentioned "the hundreds of thousands of persons who, without any fault on their part, sometimes only because of their nationality or race, have been consigned to death or to a slow decline". The Nazis themselves responded to the speech by stating that it was "one long attack on everything we stand for. ... He is clearly speaking on behalf of the Jews. ... He is virtually accusing the German people of injustice toward the Jews, and makes himself the mouthpiece of the Jewish war criminals." The New York Times wrote that "The voice of Pius XII is a lonely voice in the silence and darkness enveloping Europe this Christmas. ... In calling for a 'real new order' based on 'liberty, justice and love', ... the pope put himself squarely against Hitlerism." Speaking on the 50th anniversary of Pius's death in 2008, the German Pope Benedict XVI recalled that the Pope's voice had been "broken by emotion" as he "deplored the situation" with a "clear reference to the deportation and extermination of the Jews".

Contrast the Vatican with Albania, and imagine what was possible. Albania was the only country occupied by Nazis that increased their Jewish population during the war. The local authorities refused to hand over the names of Jewish residents when they were occupied by Nazis. When refugees arrived from across Europe, the local population got them to safety in their own homes throughout the countryside. They were concealed for months or years by adopting local names and being incorporated into host families. This experience laid the foundations for enduring bonds of friendship and family. In the entire war, only one family was discovered, and a total of 5 Jewish lives were lost. Albania is a majority Muslim, multi-faith society, and practices the tradition of Besa, which is a code of honour where protection is granted to anyone who knocks on your door. Besa means keeping your promise, and not betraying or abandoning anyone. Albanians promised the Jews they would be protected, and so they were.

The history of the Roman Catholic church should be carefully examined and other 'holy' churches as well.

Anyone who thought Hitler championed the cross and Christianity didn't read "Mein Kampf."

So, if I understand correctly, the Church of Christ made a deal with an Anti-Christ to “save” themselves?

Documentary makers who produce English language shows need to start dubbing the foreign languages in English so those of us who are simply listening to the show cam do so.

The Chief Rabbi of Rome converted to a Catholicism after the world war Ii. He mentions pope Pius xii efforts on behalf of the Jews... Eugenio Maria Zolli (27 September 1881 ‒ 2 March 1956), born Israel Anton Zoller, was an Austrian by birth, and an Italian doctorate professor of philosophy and author. Until his conversion from Judaism to Catholicism in February 1945, Zolli was the chief rabbi in Rome, Italy's Jewish community from 1940 to 1945.

Have we done a documentary on the complicity of many members of the British aristocracy in the Hitlerist movement? Why did Hess fly to Britain to talk to whom?

As a teen in the 1990s/2000s, I took an incredible interest in the Holocaust. As a Catholic, I was bothered by the Vatican's silence, so I looked to sources within the Church for explanation. I had so much faith in the Church that I didn't look beyond it for alternative explanations. I was instructed that Catholicism is steeped in the belief (and indeed pride) that Pius XII's silence was a strategic move to keep the Church politically neutral in order to avoid Nazi wrath and ultimately save more lives via underground channels. I was also instructed that the European Jewish leaders publicly honored & revered Pius XII's approach after the war. Never did I encounter a critical explanation, nor did I learn about the Church's ongoing silence after the war or some of its most powerful members' efforts to aid Nazi war criminals. I was told volumes about Catholic priests who were sent to Dachau. I certainly never learned there were openly Nazi Bishops.
