Several years ago I had the distinct honor of performing with the Ventures along with Skunk Baxter & Jeff Cook from Alabama filling in on bass. Truly one of the biggest thrills of my life. Every one of them is not only a first-rate musician, but they are all first rate humans. True gentlemen to the core. If any of them are reading this, please accept my heartfelt gratitude and thanks for your kindness, support & for turning my "rock & roll fantasy" into reality.
The Santo and Johnny original version was one of the most important records in Rock and roll History. MANY great guitarists of Rock and Roll were moved by its simple, and yet very emotive adolescent passion ( Yes passion thats what it created) There have been a lot of very good versions, and every one will have their favourites. I myself find this version very emotive .espcially on the key change at 1.37. Takes me back to being 13 or 14 again. Lovely memories.
Its strange but considering he was and has been the lead guitarist of the most succesful and longest lasting instrumental guitar band Noki is a tremendously underrated guitarist amongst the rock generation and younger. When it comes to melodic playing few can match him. He does things so well they look easy a good trick unlike so many rock guitarist who do easy things and pose and make them look hard.
I just cant say enough, how great is this? I met Noki in 2007, and I love him and his music! This song pulls me inside out emotionally, the memories attached--- absolutely beautiful composition!
Skunk is absolutely amazing with the steel guitar and makes it look easy. Classics such as House of The Rising Sun, Sleep Walk, Pipeline, Diamond Head, Wipe Out, Hawaii 5.0 and Apache. The Ventures always did their unique interpretations to these tunes and never copied the artists who composed and recorded them originally. Sleepwalk was composed and recorded originally by siblings, Santo and Johnny Farina Nokie Edwards was a master on the guitar. Made it look so easy. RIP Nokie Edwards.
Negative criticism just comes from ignorance of what music is all about. If a 100 artists recorded the same song, they would expect it to be exactly the same as the original. Robotic in nature. Artists always put their own stamp on a song...its called interpretation 'people.' This is a lovely rendition....better?....worse?...neither...just a fantastic version....period! Apparently missed was the great vibe Jeff was having with his heroes. Thank you for posting this.
The great Carlos Santana said this, "Give ten guitarists, the same exact guitar, strings, picks, amplifiers, the same settings...and you will have ten different sounding guitarists." One more...One day at a rehearsal, the Van Halen Band were rehearsing. During a break, Sammy Hagar asked Eddie if he could play his guitar....Eddie said sure......So Sammy picked up his guitar and started playing it. Sammy stopped and told Eddie, "Hey Man..can you put the settings back like you had when you were playing?" Eddie told him, "I haven't touched a thing!"
Skunkster on pedal steel. Loved the Steely Dan tunes w/ him doing pedal, like "Pearl of the Quarter" and "East St Louis Toodle-loo". Lots of fantastic live Ventures videos, for sure.
Daniel Hudelson lotz of people dont like it if itz not original, but come on this is raw talent at its best, itz mystical its soothing, itzzzz gooood!...😎
Absolutely COOL!!.A great song by just about anyone.Once again, The Ventures make it their own.Skunk gets to play along with his heroes, how great that must have been. Thanks Nokie,Don,Skunk.May you R.I.P. Bob and Mel.We all have something else to look forward to, when we get there. Thanks again for the many good years of music, guys!!
Whilst this is true, they did it their way and didn't try to copy Santo and Johnny. These guys really put themselves individually into everything they ever did.
Brothers Santo and Johnny composed this orginally, but I agree, The Ventures didn't try to copy Santo and Johnny, they did their own interpretation of Sleepwalk
Es una bendicion esta melodia!!!! "THE VENTURES" inigualables!!!!! Los amo!!!!❤💋 hoy es 14/ 10/ 2019 aun muy sentida por la partida de Nokie y de Gerry....R.I.P.😢😭😢😭😢😭😢😢
Yep. I stopped at 1:45 when he started mucking around and lost the beautiful simplicity of that melody. Up till then I just thought his tone was crap compared to Johnny and Santo.
I disagree. The original is, well, original! This version makes use of technology that didn't exist when the original was written. It is ANOTHER artist's interpretation of a superb tune. Better, Worse, Same? ALL is subjective! :-)
I absolutely love this and all music by Mr. Edwards. I learned to jive to the music of the ventures and that wasn't yesterday. I am so happy to hear that Mr. Edwards' health is greatly improving. Many prayers answered for sure , for him and his lovely wife, miss Judy. God Bless
Skunk's Defense consulting career Baxter fell into his second profession almost by accident. In the mid-1980s, Baxter's interest in music recording technology led him to wonder about hardware and software that was originally developed for military use, i.e. data-compression algorithms and large-capacity storage devices. As it happened, his next-door neighbor was a retired engineer who had worked on the Sidewinder missile program. This neighbor bought Baxter a subscription to Aviation Week magazine, provoking his interest in additional military-oriented publications and missile defense systems in particular. Backed by several influential Capitol Hill lawmakers, Baxter received a series of security clearances so he could work with classified information. In 1995, Pennsylvania Republican congressman Curt Weldon, then the chairman of the House Military Research and Development Subcommittee, nominated Baxter to chair the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense.
When I was about 5 my dad brought out a guitar and amp which I've never seen before and he cranked out walk don't run and it sounded so beautiful I bought him tickets to see the ventures for his birthday and tonight we are going to see them for the first time ever and we will be together.
Wonderful cover, and a step back through time, to when music was played by Musicians, and Talent was the driving force. Today's artists would do well to learn from these examples.
fantastic! unique sound! just like sleepwalking, really! electric hawaiian guitar... wow!... i haven't heard one in decades!... a standout, that guy!... an added-value to Ventures which i'd been a fan of for half-a-century! ..... Godblesyu all!
Jeff Baxter - on steelguitar - sure enjoy what he is doing!!! This is the true message of music: enjoy and give people a good time and a smile! THANX JEFF..............GOD BLESS!
This is beautiful. For those who disliked the video I have only one question for you. Why did you even search for the ventures in the first place? there are so many other things you could have searched for like justin beiber, lil wayne, drake, rihanna or nicki minaj for example.
Let me provide an answer. The Ventures are a great band, therefore when their cover of "Sleepwalk" came up in the sidebar, I opened it - curious to hear their take on it. Sadly, I was very much disappointed. Sleepwalk is a simple, gentle, dreamy melody that can't take this sort of abuse. Now don't take me wrong - it's hard to play Sleepwalk right. Doing that is all about relaxing, letting go.. even the greatest of the greats (and I'm looking at you, Chet Atkins) have sadly performed versions of Sleepwalk that were sub-par. So it's not me saying the Ventures are bad. They just didn't "get it". Now I understand that you might be musically ignorant enough to simply slap a label "It's Ventures - It's Great" onto everything they've done, just like fans of the "artists" you named do. Therefore I choose to ignore your feeble attempt at calling everyone with a bit of good taste a "bieber fan". Over to you, sir.
A version that approaches perfection is this Hank Marvin's rendition. He should only be a bit gentler in the descents and soften up the short notes.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f2bsY0fybHI.html
Santo and Johnny when I was sixteen. Sixty years later, Richie Valens now on the one our loop to slide into sleep. Just heard this version by the Ventures, and I love it, too. All there guys are true artists. SLEEPWALK, however you hear it, is wonderful.
