A description of why this is done would be good. The stretch of road in front of my place was flooding over because the build up of grass on the road edge prevented the water draining off the road. I requested for my local council to come do this several times, on the last time I called they said it was the owner’s responsibility. I didn’t accept this answer. They finally came and did it , although it wasn’t as good as this machine does it, the drainage is working much better.
I have never seen one of these in 40 years of traveling the country roads of northeast Victoria. Nor have I ever seen evidence of one being used. The drop-offs from bitumen to gravel on many roads up here regularly get to between 100 and 200 mm and worse in some spots.
Well, it looks nice, but it's cut too deep. I may have only studied civil engineering for two years, then chose a different career, but one thing I remember is that if you leave a lip at the edge of the seal, water gets under the seal, and vehicles close to/over the edge damage the edge, resulting in constant edge repairs. Unless they come past later with new weathered basalt gravel and roll it down to the level of the sealed surface, then it is fine.
Do they then dress it with crushed rock rammed into place and leveled or just leave it dirt and in winter mud with a lip that catches tyres causing accidents??
As an American that does site work, and road work construction this is literally the opposite of stabilizing and preventing erosion. Is this simply to cut down on roadside grass mowing or are they going to put a shoulder of gravel/stone/ or rip-rap for drainage and stabilization?

Sorry to call bullshit on this, and I understand it's not you making the decisions, and you need to be employed, but Vic Roads has been doing it along local roads where there are no trees on the edge, and they are taking away the ability to safely pull up on the side of the road if you need to. There are some things that you need to stop for, and can't 'safely' drive another km or so till you find a side road to pull into. They have done the same on some of the winding roads in the area, where they installed barriers right along the white line that delineates the edge of the road. So now, instead of pulling off the road, you have to stop in the lane, you can't even get out the passenger door because of the barrier, and have to get out the drivers door right into traffic. In one spot these barriers extend around a series of blind corners, on a road that is used by buses. If you break down now your chances of having a car, or a bus come round the corner and slam up your arse at 80kmh are frighteningly real. I had first hand experience with this last year when my car broke down on that stretch of road. Believe me it truly focuses your mind to realize there are vehicles that will come round the blind bend at 80kmh, not realizing you are there and then it's anyones guess if they can avoid you. One car left a serious set of rubber marks on the road trying to stop, and if there had been oncoming traffic there was a real potential for a head on. Don't get me started on wire barriers. Since they have been going in, I have seen a vehicle hit a bridge pillar on the ring road (the wires just pulled round the front of the car as it ripped them out of their holders (as they're designed to do), but it didn't stop it hitting the bridge. I've also seen the aftermath of the same thing with a car hitting a tree, the barriers just don't stop them, where a solid barrier (armco) would almost certainly have deflected the vehicles back onto the road (as it's done for decades). Don't get me started on what happens if a motor bike rider hits one. All the European countries like Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands who were involved in the wire barrier technology originally, have been pulling them out and replacing them with Armco for nearly ten years now. I imagine they have probably scrapped all their wire rope barriers by now, they obviously realized that they didn't deliver the safety required, and are actively dangerous in certain circumstances. They are actually designed to be used where there is plenty of run off, and they gradually encircle the vehicle and bring it to a controlled stop. They are not designed to stop vehicles from hitting objects close to the side of the road. Most West European countries actually have a law that requires them to clear the side of the road for 20, or 30 metres for the safety of the drivers. You will see this particularly through Germany, and Austria. The rope barriers are not designed to be mixed with a country that lets trees grow right at the edge of the road. Of course some of the more minor roads in Europe aren't cleared like that, but then they use Armco barriers, not wire for those areas, and also for some strange reason, they expect people using a vehicle to be able to drive competently, and pay attention while driving. These 2 things are rapidly becoming Australias most dangerous road issue, even apart from the shocking road conditions, lack of road maintenance, and general apathy about safety.
Grass will grow sideways and cover up the pavement. If I don't edge the lawn within one summer's growth it can cover the sidewalk with 3 to 5 inches of sod. It's a country road, they aren't going to s spend money installing curbs.
That's funny. In Finland road draining is not a problem even with grass on the shoulder. Should make proper roads so they won't require excess maintenance.

I'm not a civil engineer, but something tells me that they are not installing a sidewalk along that country road unless maybe they plan to walk the cows on it to keep the hoofs clean!?!?!?!
Be lucky to see that how crap are the roads and roadsides in Victoria when you could go across the border the roads and roadsides are brilliant at least you can pull a car or truck right off the road they should use graders on the roadside every 6 months wouldn't need to take it away in a truck be minor and keep the roads actually dry as the water would run away
on some highways the shoulders are like an afterthought and joke! important emergency and rescue vehicles would need to use it and we ought to respect that part of the highway...
Germans do the opposite! They have a machine that plants grass!!! I lived in Germany and in Canada. I like the grass on top of gravel much better. Cutting grass is cheaper and safer as re-graveling every other year or so!

Over time that material on the shoulder builds up. Once it does it prevents water from draining as it should. Now water will move to the ditch rather than pooling in the road.
They're removing like a solid inch or 2 of soil (the whole root structure of the grass) my guess is they're putting in a sidewalk So to answer ur question: zombie Apocalypse
@@dwightstewart7181 it's clearing way more than 2 feet. the distance from the grass to the white line is about the width of the vehicle parked on the shoulder..Hence why I mentioned breakdown lane.
That's such a good point I'm having the same problem with people commenting about these fires in Northern California and claiming conspiracies and how there's things going on in the fires up here that shouldn't be taking place but they know nothing it's pointless idiots will be idiots
So I actually live in the shire next door to this, and they've been doing the same thing on the side of the road here. Let me be quite plain about how savage I intend to be. These people are moronic dangerous fuckwits. For some reason, perhaps to make it look neat, they have cut away the flat grassy area on the edge of the road, that I used to be able to pull over onto quite safely, and easily if something required me to stop for any reason. In the past, once I had dealt with whatever I needed to do, I could have put the car in gear and driven easily back onto the bitumen and continued my journey. Now, the sides of the road have been cut at an extreme angle, and instead of the little bit of traction that grass gives, even when wet, especially if it's flat and level with the road, I have a steeply angled bit of clay, which is deep enough that if I drive onto it, the underside of my car grinds on the edge of the bitumen, and then it's got no grip, so if you try to turn back to the bitumen (upwards because of the angle), the tyres just slide down the clay till you hit whatever is at the bottom. Chances of getting back on the road are virtually zero till the tow truck arrives. The alternative way to stop is to pull up with all your wheels still on the bitumen, yes that's right, to just stop in the driving lane, where other cars will come up behind you at 80, or 100kmh depending on where you are. I have seen a number of cars actually do this now, because they take one look at that steep slippery bit of clay that used to be a safe flat road edge that they could pull off on, and they rightly assess that it would be dangerous to drive off the edge of the road onto it, and that once down they probably can't drive back on the road. Do you think it's safe to just stop in the driving lane? What kind of a fuckwit came up with this stupid deadly 'improvement' to the sides of our roads? I do get that from an engineering point of view it's 'neat', or perhaps it's just fun to watch the grass rolling off the cutting blade, but from a driving perspective it's sheer lunacy, and super dangerous. And because we are actually talking about a road, not a park, or playground, it's actually extremely relevant to safety while driving. Another example of bureaucrats gone mad. If the edges of the road were such a concern, maybe they should have installed a stable safe edge, with bitumen, or a solid strip of gravel. No such luck. The crazy thing is that they already know all this, because a couple of major country roads in the area have had their sides excavated in recent years and a solid concrete edge has been installed so that it's safe to pull onto the edge and it won't collapse under the car, or let you slide off the edge. Can't understand why anyone would give this a thumbs up. I won't, and it looks like there's some other locals also giving it a thumbs down. The real trick is how the hell do we stop these fuckwits from making our local roads even more dangerous than they are?
I like the tar and gravel shoulder but unfortunately America is going to straight gravel shoulder that is soon over taken by grass to save$$$ and then they are to cheap to mow the grass more than once a year
knowing the state of roads in werribee and victoria, this machine made one pass, and was scrapped, vic roads needs 4000 of these, ha, never in a 1000 years, and all the petrol tax we pay
