@@fishoutofwaterseries1424 Dogs too. It was a barbaric 19th century English way of dealing with them. Radiohead has a line "If you'd been a dog they would have drowned you at birth."
"Like a cat in a bag waiting to drown" is a reference to the helplessness/uselessness we feel when a loved one is on their death bed, as the song is partly about his dad's death. It's also about his depression, and fears of his own ageing and mortality. It's a great line, even if the practice of drowning cats is seriously messed up...
The songs about his father who was dying and he wrote the song to him on his death bed. Beautiful song. Beautiful sentiment and Ashcroft is the most underrated musician of the past 25 years
The reference to the mirror was saying that once the drugs effect wear of, look in a mirror and you are still the same. The anti depressants don't do anything just mask the pain.
Not completely, they refer to his battle with depression and all the bad things in his life. How the anti depressants just hide the pain till they wear of but change nothing. The drugs dont work
This song is about a friend of Richard Ashcroft who was terminally Ill and the effects the medication on them. It's not about addiction or hard drugs. A beautifully tragic song about coping with loss
It was about his battle with depression and all those bad things in his life. The anti depressants hide the pain but when they wear off everything remains. The reference to the mirror is the reflection of yourself has not changed, all the pain is still there. The drugs dont work
The Drugs Don't Work The Verve All this talk of getting old It's getting me down my love Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown This time I'm coming down And I hope you're thinking of me As you lay down on your side Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again But I know I'm on a losing streak As I pass down by your street And if you wanna show, then just let me know And I'll sing in your ear again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again 'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven falls, I'm coming too Just like you said, if you leave my life, I'm better off dead All this talk of getting old It's getting me down my Lord Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown This time I'm coming down Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again 'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven falls, I'm coming too Just like you said, if you leave my life, I'm better off dead But if you wanna show, just let me know And I'll sing in your ear again Now the drugs don't work They just make you worse But I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again Yeah, I know I'll see your face again, oh Lord Yeah, I know I'll see your face again, oh Lord I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more I'm never coming down now, I'm never coming down No more, no more, no more, no more, no more

I am going to say something else, that has nothing to do with music. I hate Trump. Why? I spent 9 years in the army defending the constitution, that this piece of shit is going to be our next president, disgusts me, and he will be,
What's your problem cat in a bag was a way of getting rid and that's how he feels its about somebody dying and the drugs aren't working anymore painkillers etc sentimental wrong word emotional better
Hey if you want to hear a better soooo much better version of this song Ben Harper did a live cover of this song and its amazing! would love to see your reaction to that
The cat in the bag reference.. That's to do with the practice of putting unwanted kittens into a bag and then throwing the bag in the river. It was very common practice unfortunately back in the day.
