What are you talking about bro. Im friends with a lot of Indian Americans. They all call themselves that. Maybe in academia you think its changed. But like even in academia now, I see the term AmerIndian used now... Think about how insulting Native American is. Ok so theyre "native" what does that make the rest of us , Civilized Americans??? Go talk with some about how offended they are actually rather than reading a books.
Hi Robert, you look like a professional person. Like an accountant or lawyer or something. Are you? I’m 23 I recently graduated. You seem like an avid reader, so am I. I don’t know if this weird, but if I’m right - that you’re a professional & you read a lot of literature, then I’d like to know you because you look like the person I am trying to become myself. Maybe you could mentor me or something idk. I’m not expecting a reply 😅 so don’t feel pressured into replying unless you really want to. Cheers.
Any of us can leave life at any given moment. That’s why this channel is brilliant, when you look at life through that lens, you become instantly more grateful for what you have and the limitless potential that is life.
I reread Meditations and finally read Letters to a Stoic Seneca. Other meaningful books this year: 1. Beyond Order 2. God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens 3. Brave New World 4. Notes from the Underground 5. The Book of Five Rings 6. The Art of Peace 7. Lincoln on Leadership
@@aidanhall6679 I'm a Christain. I like much of the Stoic ideas if they don't go against my Christianity. I don't care to read that book because he is an atheist. Perhaps he has good advice but I'm biased. There are, I think other Christians hanging about here. Have a good day.
@@dorismahoney1440 I am Christian too. I believe in God, I believe that Jesus died on the cross and I love him. Hitchens was also a creation of God and He loved him too. Hitchens was a brilliant mind that made me challenge my beliefs. There are Christians like Doug Wilson who debated Hitchens and he was proud to call him a brilliant mind and prayed for him when he died in 2011.
Here are the books I've ordered today: The Enchiridion - Epictetus Letters from a Stoic - Seneca On Duties - Cicero Atomic Habits - James Clear How to be a Stoic - Massimo Pigliucci The Daily Stoic Journal
Reading Courage is Calling right now, and can't wait to come to the Painted Porch someday! I read 51 books in 2021 (one was Man's Search for Meaning) ... you inspire me by reading hundreds!
I don't usually leave comments due to my poor use of english grammar, but I really want to thank you for making such motivational videos, these days whenever I feel stuck I came back to your channel to find something to listen, sometimes a tiny tiny little thing can cause dramatic impact to your emotions, I'm always trying to figure out how to take things easily, you gave me the solution is to read more, to write more on your journal. Thank you so much, I wish you have a wonderful future!
“I’m not really into boxing. But here’s the book about boxing that I really like. Also, here’s this other book about boxing I’ve read several times” Really glad I rediscovered your channel. Your curiosity is infectious.
I think both of the previous comments are somehow right. Basically, you should just read what you enjoy and what you find interesting. No matter how much and how often. If you are interested in reading, you make time for it. On the other hand, reading goals can also be motivating. You could perhaps end up scrolling senselessly on social media pages again or watch some stupid casting show on TV that you completely forgot in 2 days. But the reading-goal reminds you for example, to put your smartphone far away and read. Again and again. No matter how it turns out: have fun!
Nice! I put 100 must-reads on my list for '22 and have done 7 books / 7 days so far, so happy about that :D The number of books hardly matters, I enjoy the camaraderie of reading goals, and I hope you achieve your goal this year as well man
I’m adding all of these books to my reading list, thanks for sharing! 💫 Keep rising to be who you want to be! 💫 #keeprising #risingtobe #aswerise #riser
Have you tried James Joyce's 'Ulysses'? It's like a literary Everest, and I felt a real sense of achievement once finished. I'll never read it again though as it's definitely a 'One and done'
@@jumhed994 no I haven’t. I’m 3 books in with Proust but had to put it down for a while. I need a breather from chapters about ropes, and in Proust’s case 20 pages awaiting a kiss 😂. I just started To Kill a Mockingbird last night and it’s already an adventure. I have The Count de MontCristo on deck. I heard Ulysses is a must right up there with Search of Lost time☺️
@@gracefitzgerald2227 The main problem I've found with reading literature (it's not really a problem though), is that it's very hard to go back to airport novels
@@jumhed994 you are so right on the money! My FIL gave me a murder mystery about a doctor getting stuck on a mountain with a group she hardly knew. It was laughable. I didn’t have the heart to tell him it was awful. The book I read before that, Crime and Punishment 😛😂. I sound like a jerk.
@@gracefitzgerald2227 I felt the same after reading 'The Brothers Karamazov'. Family would see me reading and lend me some pulp. There's definitely room for entertaining pulp, but it's so hard to get into it if one's just finished something more 'high-brow'. Need to decompress first 😁
Beautiful, deep and straight forward as usual. Thank you Ryan for making my days and my weeks through the Daily Stoic daily emails and your videos. You take Stoicism into a modern level which is absolutely enjoyable! Happy new year and keep on the great work! Love and respect from Beirut, Lebanon!
Thank you Ryan amazing video reading is a superpower the problem is the desire to read knowing is not enough we must supply don't choose what happens to us but we choose how to respond I always enjoy your videos thank you keep up the amazing work👍🏼
I just started studying Stoicism and found your channel . I also subscribe to your podcast. I love the content. Which one of your books would you recommend to read first? Keep up the good work!
I’ve learned to read ,non vocalisation,I can now hold an image as oppose to words .reading way much more .like could do 3 or so books a month ,I absolutely love reading now ,
Interesting recommendations! Man's Search for Meaning and Meditations were the only ones I'd already known. Definitely putting Indiana Givers on my list, sounds very interesting.
Great meditation for the day- read Marcus Aurelius "Meditations", Victor Frankle's "Man's Search for Meaning", Albert Camus' "The Plague", Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America", all of Nassim Taleb's collection again this year. Great for perspective. Excited to read your book "Courage is Calling" this year. Will add these to the 2022 reading list.
In this year, I ordered " The Daily Stoic: 366 ...", (In Polish version). I reed every day, this book complete changing my live. Thanks and greetings from Poland 🌦️. Of course Happy New York
Good recommendations. Put a few of them on my 2022 reading list. I agree on biographies. I personally tend to avoid if the person is still alive and if it’s a “with” autobiography.
Are there any public statues of Marcus Aurelius, and didn't he own slaves? ....Uh oh. The two best books I read this year are Learned Optimism by Martin Seligman and Aging Well by George Vaillant. I also enjoyed the books by Tom Butler Bowdon, like his 50 Spiritual Classics, also, there is a great audio rendition on YT of a Confederacy of Dunces which is a wonderful antidote to the daily calamity.
Thanks for the book recommendations I have just ordered Meditations: The Annotated Edition. May I recommend one of the best books I have read this year The Chip TR Reid. He helps us to re-evaluated what a hero is. Great line in the book. "Being rich never mattered much to Jack Kirby" Marcus Aurelius would have agreed.
A great recommendation as always but I can no longer read about the Holocaust as it shatters my heart and makes me angry at the same time. The Choice is a great book.
I like how you have slowed your speech a bit! Sometimes with the faster videos, I get that talking faster might help in making the message more "explosive"(?) but for Stoicism, I kinda feel it's nice if it doesn't feel rushed and you can really let each sentence sink in. Thanks for sharing this list.
I appreciate how available you’ve made stoicism for people like me, just getting into it, but I keep running into a liberal/left lean with Courage is Calling and videos like this. Is that just an unintentional consequence of personal feelings making it into your work? I try to just focus on the point of the story that you’re using as an example, but keep running into it. I originally thought this to be an apolitical philosophy.
@@RyanHolidayYT so would you say it doesn’t matter our political leaning? I’ve learned quite a bit from your content and it’s helped tremendously for me personally, so I think it still could be beneficial for me.
You mention the virtues. I often think of the virtues, could give examples of how to practice the virtues. If we only learn virtues by doing them over and over: then practically how do you practice courage daily? How do you practice wisdom?
Keep it up! I am dropping 1 song a week for the next 3 years straight. It has never been done in music before. Come along for the ride if you want. Stay blessed ! - Bryan
That is all great stuff, I have finished to read Yes To Life just a week ago, however there's one type of book almost no one is reading about : Critical Argumentation. People need to learn about this stuff, I recommend Fundamentals Of Critical Argumentation by Douglas Walton
Stoked to see Jack Weatherford get a shout out - check out my 3hour interview with him here on Genghis Khan & Mongolia ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ToYtRpOdNBM.html
Stupendous, Thank you for your recommendations Ryan 😁😃🥰💞 Love your bookstore, Lots of books. Beautiful. Peace, love, joy and happiness to you Ryan and everyone, Thank you universe. 📚📚📚💞🥰😃😁💫😍👽🌌🛸♾️🐉🌗🦄🧬🌈😁💞
You would think that a man who admires the humble Marcus aurelius so much would be humble himself but Ryan Holiday always makes sure that you remember each one of his accomplishments: his conference talks, his published books and the alleged people who subscribed to his newsletter (we all know that it is only a marketing strategy)."over 300 thousands people" lol come on. We all know it isn't true. I know I sound like a hater and I should probably not follow this channel, but I am here for the insights in read in the comments. The content of the videos is always a remix of the others, so I rely on the followers to share some wisdom and knowledge.
You claim Patterson was mistreated by Muhammad Ali? Have you lost your mind? Patterson was calling him Cassius Clay constantly and was outspoken against black Muslims and patriotic to the same government and country that was oppressing the blacks 🤦♂️
The reason I cannot say that Meditations is the absolute best stoic / life philosophy book out there, is bc he wasn't really anti - slavery. And he didnt rape female slaves bc it was wrong but bc it was an indicator of self indulgence... So most of the time I'm pretty confused how to feel about his lessons. They are really eye opening at times but how can I take life lessons from such a person? Still very confused about it all
It was a different time with a different set of morals. Take the good and leave the bad. Think for yourself. Slavery of all races and people has existed throughout the entire world for most of man's history. That doesn't mean you can't learn and admire what was correct and moral in history. Learn from both the right and the wrong. That's stoicism.
@@noblephoenix6151 that was actually really helpful. I guess you can't find anyone throughout history who was purely good and had no faults. Thank you for the response.
Dylan , Totally agree with your concession. As for this stoic RU-vidr , well he was doing great with me until he spoke about tearing down statues . Don’t he realize after artifacts, books are next. History proves this…
Fine move the artifact statues to the museums where they belong. If it was a statue of Hitler in the public square there would be not question about whether that is ok or not. Why is this any different?
I'm gonna get some of these books. However, trying to rewrite and getting rid of history in this country whether it's good or bad is absolutely wrong. I completely disagree with you about tearing down statues then they'll put up a statue of George Floyd or some other criminal. I respected what you had to say until now. You say put your political views aside then get political when you mention Indian Givers. Also, if an inanimate object bothers you that much where you need to remove it from our history then you should talk to a professional buddy. Just saying. Anyways, God Bless ya
Sorry going to disagree with you on the Confed monument. If we go around tearing down every marker and monument dedicated to the Confed troops, we are doing a disservice to history by pretending it never existed. Stop trying to tear down monuments You also seem to be very preoccupied about being "politically correct".....very off putting. A stoic isn't going to bother himself with what is politically correct
Why take down the statues. It is our history and we cant change anything about it. Its in the past. History isnt supposed to make you feel good, it is supposed to be real and raw.
More and more liberalism in these videos. It’s unfortunate because I really liked the vids and continue to read and practice but the whole political correctness is just killing it. I don’t care about his personal political beliefs but it’s suddenly gotten hard to ignore. The good thing is you can read all of the works from the original great Greek thinkers and not patronize his shop or buy his books. Really you should be getting it from the source anyway.
I'm delighted you failed to remove the Confederate statue, that means there are people who live in your community who are much more stoic than you, you should have them on
12:55 He wasn't mistreated by Muhammad Ali, he got served. --“The image of a Black Muslim as the world heavyweight champion disgraces the sport and the nation,” Patterson before the fight. He refused to call his opponent by his name, instead referring to him as 'Clay'. Ali was furious. “Patterson says he's gonna bring the title back to America.
Wow. Why do non-fans continue to watch this channel ? Just tune out, for gosh sake. One of the things America is based on is free speech. This is Ryan's channel. Keep up the great work, Ryan.
