The Very Strange Story Of American Dog: The Original Version Of Bolt 

As someone who loves Bolt, I might be a bit biased, but I don't think I would've been interested in this movie as much. The charm of Bolt is that Bolt find himself in the real world but see it through like his TV serie. In American Dog, the real world seems even wilder than a TV serie would be, between a zombie serial killer, a throwing-knives gorilla, a giant radioactive bunny, animals that can drive. Ultimately it's less that the character doesn't know the real world but lacks life skills and is thrust in a wild world. It's closer to Rango in that regards.

Once you explained that the American Dog character was designed by the same guy (or maybe same team/artist under him?) behind Lilo and Stitch his design totally clicked, even more so with the Croods and HTTYD in mind. Dude really loves creatures with funky heads and big noses and I admire that.

Same, American Dog was technically my first gateway to lost media back in the mid 2000s

From what I've seen/heard of American Dog, it seems it would've been like a Coen Bros movie for kids or a Frank Zappa album brought to life. Basically, a bit of old-school Americana gone absurdly wrong. I love the tweaked-out vibe this has, but there's no way Disney would've released it as it was. Chris Sanders is such an exceptional storyteller, so I can't imagine the plot was that messy, at least not as much as it sounds. My guess is the characters would've made it work since he has such a good handle on eccentric personalities. I wish I could see a story reel to know exactly how it would've panned out.

The lack of charm of Bolt is that Blot is an exeedingly bland character despite the fun idea of having a character see the real world through his TV series. in American Dog, the real world seems even wilder than what he'd be used to even in TV, betweem a zombie serial killer, a throwing-knives gorilla, a giant radioactive bunny, animals that can drive. Ultimately it''d probably of been far more interesting than the safe nothingness that was the dull world of Bolt. Heck, i'd argue it's closer to Rango in that reguard and i fucking love Rango, that movie rocks @Hadeshy slander, the unbased Blot lover
