You are the MOST patient bird owner I have eve seen. I know they can get angry and literally curse you off this planet but, you persisted and with love got your way.
Max was a child who wished to a genie to be turned into a parrot so he would not have to go to the dentist ever again. Little did he know, parrots have to go to the vet. He's really pissed about it.
Just so people understand, this is not a fear response. It's just a cockatoo being petulant and throwing a tantrum like they are known to do. Max is not afraid; he's just being a brat.
Cockatoos are high strung birds that need lots of attention and patience from their humans. That's why they are the most frequent species to wind up in a parrot shelter/rescue. That's because their humans grew tired of their neediness and no longer wanted to devote the time and effort it takes to keep them in captivity. One reason I like watching Max's channel is because it doesn't try to hide the difficulties that go along with taking care of this particular breed. On Max's channel, Dan shows the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of Cockatoo caretaking. It's not for the faint of heart. It's not even for the average person. It takes a devoted person to keep them in good physical and mental health.

The man that first had Max used a CB raideo alot & this is what Max remembers. He is very intelligent. The next man that had Max just wasn't into all the care that has to be done and when Dan watched Max for awhile they really bonded. Then back with the man again Max wasn't doing well at all cause he really loved Dan. The guy didn't want Max but made Dan probably paid a pretty penney to save Max. Dan read up on how to take good care of a Cockatoo and he's been doing an outstanding job of it ever since. You can see it in Max's eyes the love he has for Daddy Dan & you can see how much Dan loves Maxwell baby bird. We love them as well. We are lucky to get to spend time watching that sweet bird & the funny things he does.
Lmao! When Max was up on the table throwing his fit...it sure sounds like he's yelling, " HOW MANY TIMES do I have to TELL YOU?!!!! I am NOT going to the G**DAMN VET!!!!"..." AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!!!"....Lmao, I almost fell off my chair laughing so hard. You have a wonderful bird. Max is a character! 😄👌
I've kept birds for over twenty years and have never seen one that makes a bigger fuss about getting into a carrier than Max! Wow you have your hands full well and truly with Max Dan. Lol. On a serious note I'm glad the vet has given Max a clean bill of health, it's reassuring after his last health scare.

as much as Max makes me laugh. watching you Dan stand there with your arms crossed reminded me so much of a typical parent trying to have the last word with a child and not winning lol
That boy is nothing if not emphatic! There's not much that will get a full-on laugh out of me these days, but Max has had me in tears at times, and when Dan joins the party (they are such a perfect double act!) all hope is lost and I know I'm going to be annoying my neighbors for a while. It's impossible to stay quiet when they really get going. I have to be really careful about which videos I watch if it's getting late.

At 3:37, it sounds like he said "I'm sick of you." I love his curmudgeonly complaining. I know he's ticked off and upset, but he's such a funny character.
I imagine you have to wake up quite early on Vet days! I know Max is distressed which is really unfortunate but at the same I can't help but belly laugh at his indignation!
Oh max you are such a baby. I am sure your daddy gives you plenty of love and treats when you get back from the vet. Dan props to you for being so great with him. I use to work for a bird sanctuary/rescue and so many bird parent can't handle or refused to give the birds they have the proper attention they need. Keep up the loving and care you give to max.
I never thought Max would ever out do the first video of the vet visit, where he is at the top of the stairs under the shelf. But now, I think he has topped that one. This video was definitely worth waiting for. LOL Max is such a little stinker.
+crystal miller my thoughts exactly I always love it whenever max sees his carrier he has to turn the house into a mad max reboot and vet videos like this are and always will be worth the wait I think Dan spoiled max too much with his freedom and I hope that he'll teach max somehow to get used to his carrier
+TheGuitarplayer112 I think they are too clever so even getting him used to carrier in house he'll remember any horrors that may happen at vet or in car ride all things that are out of control really as vet visits can't always be fun

Wow, he sure does not like to go in the carrier. What is he like when you get there? Is it easier to get him back in the carrier to go home? I love how vocal he is about the trip. Does he try to bite you when you put him in. Thank you for sharing, he is a truly remarkable parrot, you have an amazing relationship with him.
He's only like that at home when he leaves the vet he willingly walks into the carrier I've seen Dan say this lol and judging by the pics at the vet in one of his vids id say once he gets there he's calm again (pics of the vet holding him in a towel)
"But you do need to go." "But I don't WANT go in there!" LOL I swear he kept saying, "I want to play! I want to play today!" LOL And at one point under the table it sounded like he said, "I don't like the sound of your voice." LMAO And when he laughed and thunked his head down... and later laughing when he thought he finally won. OMFG. He's so funny!
This is adorable! And basically like raising a toddler quite honestly. 😝 My advice would be to maybe either take him to the vet more frequently so he doesn't necessarily immediately associate it with a bad thing, or give him more carrier time. He might spit in your coffee for it later, but tell him you're going to Disneyland!

I used to have a cockatoo just like Mr. Max. his name was Ziggy and he had been abused. He was given away and given back several times. The home I got him from had him in a dark basement. We would spend about an hour making elaborate Lego towers just to have him tear it apart in 5 minutes. I miss him so much and seeing Max is very bittersweet.

+Un Mario I have the same problem with going the dentist as Max has going to the vet.(a lovely genetic gift from my parents). I too almost have to be pushed and pulled (and nagged) to get in the car and go. The car is my own 'carrier" lol! I can never think of enough reasons not to go, but I swear and rant a lot when I do get in the car. I am going to bitch about it from the house to the dentist (where I shall pretend to be a "lady" ha!).

I think the original owner made dan watch it since he had to go away from his home for 6 months, but Max grew attached to dan, so when he gave him back to the original owner, max began to freak out (which caused the hitting the cage thing)
Max's original owner was an elderly man who had passed away. Someone Dan knew bought Max off of Craigslist. The guy went off on a construction job for 3 months, and had Dan take care of Max. During that time Max bonded with Dan. When Dan gave Max back to his actual owner, Max would scream all day. It got so bad Dan had to visit Max every day to calm him down. Eventually, it became obvious that Max had bonded to Dan and would not accept being owned by anyone else, so Dan bought him and the rest is history. A happy ending for Max and a lifelong friend for Dan.
What was his estimated age when you got him? Did you know the original owner? I wonder if they had a young kid with some kind of megaphone or kazoo who would speak through it, or some crazy talking toy. Sounds like Max picked up on that pretty heavily. He does imitate quite a few "normal" words, right?
I love the patience you have with him. It is the key, I think- not to get flustered yourself. You talk to him in a lovely calm voice. You give him time. B x
