Alice Springs: a tiny speck in a vast, red, dry interior. Surprisingly, this town is a fertile oasis of historical highlights - the center of an early mass communications trail, a vital transport link in the battle to save Australia from invasion, and a vital link in a chain of nuclear early-warning sites. And that’s not all. Tony’s last walk finishes at one of Central Australia’s most spectacular natural landmarks.

1859 was also the year a set back for the telegraph industry happened: a solar flare disruptioned the entire world wide system; of course given the fact that it was the mid 19th century; technology for prevention and protection for early electrical systems had only come so far😮!

@GalliaNarbonensis That did happen on at least one line. The event didn't do any serious damage, but it did disrupt and delay communications for a short time. Not a disaster, just an inconvenience. If the same level of event happened today it would be more serious, causing electrical grids to shut down. Automatic isolators would catch the worst of the damage, but it'd still take weeks to complete repairs.

Australia just seems like such an amazing place. I often wish that my ancestors would have went to Australia rather than America. And it's always interesting watching new things with Tony. I'm 90% sure I watched every Time Team episode they made.

When he got to the American bunker, my first thought was that scene from The Simpsons where Homer jumps back and forth across the border.

It's good to see that the benefits of 'working from home' have been incorporated into 'working at School from home'. Instead of a costly and complicated system of numerous local schools, with numerous curriculums, teachers, library's and costs for infrastructure, one centralized 'school' can work with small groups of far flung students to provide an excellent education they would normally have little chance at...

If Alice Locson(spelling?), is in charge of History Tv, and you're in Alice Springs, does that make her the mayor? Lol. As always all the best to everyone. Chef Scott 👨‍🍳

I do not wish to troll here, but _what_ exactly is the Victorian innovation we're talking about? I have a hunch that Australia would have been just fine if the Victorians had left it alone.
