To be honest four outfits isn’t even that much! Only one more outfit than most people wear really (Pjs, work clothes, after work comfy clothes)

In addition to what the other commenter said, they also used natural fibers for clothing. Natural fibers breath so much better than synthetic. They are really great at keeping you warm in cool weather and cool in the heat. I’ll be totally fine wearing my wool skirts in the middle of summer, but my sheer polyester blouses make me so sweaty.
@beyondbackwater4933

@_Emily_Moore_ I dunno about that, things like wool are super uncomfortable in even mild weather
@ornitharts
@ornitharts Год назад
@@beyondbackwater4933 Super thick wool is obviously not going to feel the nicest, but lightweight wools are really great for summer. Lightweight wool keeps you cool and dry in the summer and it is odor resistant. If you have a wool blend (wool thats blended with some sort of synthetic fiber) it won't be as breathable or as great in the summer heat as 100% wool.

@@ornithartsYou see, I’ve always heard this but I find it very hard to believe. Try going out in a 100% cotton T-shirt in the middle of summer, doesn’t do as much as you might think

We do the same thing nowadays! To put this into modern context: 1. Wake up wearing your pyjama’s 2. Change into a bathrobe for breakfast 3. Put on your office outfit to go to work 4. Change into sweats once you get home for lounging around the house We haven’t changed that much 😉

Or you wake up in sweats bc you don’t have time for fancy pajamas (no offense intended, if you wear cute pajamas to bed, more power to you! 😊), then continue to wear sweats for breakfast (if you have time for it, sometimes it’s just shoving a granola bar into your mouth practically whole and chugging some juice or water to wash it down), usually already in my work clothes at that point, because I only use my bathrobe for, well, bathing. Then, if you’re me, unless you’re already in your work clothes, you put them on and go to work in scrubs, which are extremely comfortable and quite comparable to sweats in my opinion, and then change into sweats again when you get home (if you get home that night, sometimes you have to stay longer) So some of us are “sweats all day” kind of people lol

Victorian era is a pretty long period of time….1837-1901. So I would simply add that the style and function of the clothes vary depending on the decade…. Cycling suit comes pretty late, teagowns would have been a staple throughout. Even the shape of the corset changes….
@oldasyouromens
@oldasyouromens Год назад
Teagowns, even, are a late 1860s to 1890s thing. The closest I can see to a tea gown before then are examples of "seaside evening dress" (dress meaning outfit, not the garment itself), which was long sleeved and made in a wrap style with a petticoat showing, and "fancy wrappers" for at home guests or invalids.

Makes sense when they washed their clothes less. The less time you stay in them the less dirty they will get. Also made sense to have an outfit for chores/cleaning too
@bluebeesmarple
@bluebeesmarple 11 месяцев назад
their undergarments were also a barrier to prevent sweat and skin oils from dirtying their clothes, fully washing it would make the dyes leak as well so they did “maintenance” without water or without fully wetting it, that’s also why the undergarments are white, so they could be regularly washed and boiled, to keep the clothes touching their skin always clean
@slowjamsliver7006

At middle class they'd also be employing servants too. So, they would have the ability to chooses what chores and cleaning they would be doing if their estate was too big for just their servants. Also, the Angel of the Household myth would also lead to a middle class lady probably doing less chore/cleaning than we might expect there too.

Being a rural person, who is familiar with the life most farm women lived at the turn of the century, I can see how a divide was forming between rural and working-class women and those from middle to upper class people. A day filled with animal and child care, gardening and cooking would have surely warranted a simple, serviceable wardrobe with more formal clothing (likely just one or two dresses) for church and trips to town.
@internetopinion3043
@internetopinion3043 11 месяцев назад
And often the formal clothing is merely the newest clothing. As the clothes wear, they get demoted to errands wear, then house wear or sewn into something else (a quilt, childrens clothing) then eventually rags for cleaning or made into rag rugs. I have an ancestor that would collect rags from people and make rugs and sell them
@teachergirl41
@teachergirl41 11 месяцев назад
@@internetopinion3043 absolutely. Clothes that were too tattered to wear or outgrown were also repurposed into patches for other clothes or worked into quilts. Heck, my mom even took worn out quilts, encased them in flannel and made thick blankets. I especially enjoy stories of how certain patterns of cloth used for flour sacks would be sought out to finish dresses or make more underwear.

The lace veils, bonnets, hair arrangements, jewelry, gloves, hand bags, stockings and shoes, and parasols all pile up on the list of accessories to round out the look but also signify the weather these people typically contended with in places like London and New York, especially on rainy days and when they've manure piles to navigate at every turn.

Some still do this to a degree today too. Of course not all of us. I hate clothes aside from a thin underwear layer, if I didn't have to wear most clothing i probably would never do it. For example, I pretty much wear the same stuff multiple times a week (within reason), and it's typically a tank, jean shorts or leggings, athletic shoes and a jacket/shrug/hoodie I am lazy and love efficiency, so for bed I will, as long as I am clean, pull on my next day outfit so I can hop outta bed fully dressed to save time and allow for extra sleep. I also often don't wear night clothes unless it's the week and that's basically all I wear.
