The video filming set-up on my narrowboat. Not a tutorial.

Not sure if anyone will even be interested but this is a quick overview of how I now set up the narrowboat for webcasts or piece-to-camera recordings.
It's hardly a "pro" TV studio but I have gone live on RU-vid (via Streamyard, a laptop and a cheap HDMI capture card) with this setup, as well as recording various bits so I thought it might be of interest.
Not a tutorial, and far from perfect; just how I do it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I've always liked a bit of 'behind the scenes' and this one was a bit of an eye opener on how you maintain such a high standard. 'Just a quick piece to camera' is clearly a far more complex proposition to a pro. Well worth the effort. 👍

Hi David, Really informative and entertaining video....as you know as in most things, the more you spend on equipment the more of diminishing returns ( many years ago I got into Hi-Fi ) More recently was spending time and some money on photography for selling on eBay, only to end up using my phone which gave me 'good' photos and was just so much faster and easier for the purpose. I follow you on your narrowboat vlogs and really enjoy the content and your straight forward views, sense of humor and high standard of all round production. Take care Steve

Hello. I am a fan of your channel. In March 2014 you made a video about the settings of the Panasonic HC X 920, which really helped me a lot. I am now looking forward to your review and the settings of the Panasonic HC X 1500/2000 with the immediate question whether the HC X 1500 is much better than my current HC X 920 (which I am very satisfied with by the way). Nice setup! I like the tip regarding baking paper. Easy solution for getting even lighting! Do you know what the “color temperature” is? 2000K is typically yellowish like old tungsten light bulbs.. and 5000K is “daylight” .. sometimes rather blueish. (Tends to make me look pasty white! LOL.)
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
The Godox light is daylight (5600), the Aputure fill light is more towards tungsten (usually around 3200 rather than 2000, which would be extremely yellow); my subsequent addition of a back light is an RGB fixture that can create various temperatures as required.
@WillN2Go1
@WillN2Go1 3 года назад
I was going to put in my two cents, having been a professional photographer for many decades, however, your results are excellent and my 'simpler' set up would cause a lot of problems with your eyeglasses - which your set-up has solved. So well done, David. Baking (parchment) paper is in every grip truck I've ever seen. (Working on a commercial once with two time Academy Award winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler, he used baking paper and one bulb for a shot). It's handy, it's cheap, it doesn't melt if you get it near a bulb (the old filament ones). And of course I've used it, too. I am also impressed with the LED ring lights. But then these show up in your glasses (I wear them too.) And soft boxes are no better than your parchment paper except in two ways. 1. There's no spill light bouncing around which is not a problem in your set up, and 2. They're more efficient with the light which you don't need. The other advantage which no longer matters with digital is the 'translume' (expensive diffusion sheeting) is it doesn't shift the color balance to warm as the parchment paper does. So were you to hire Freddie Jones (3 Osars for David Lean's movies) to do your set-up, he'd walk in look at it and say 'Right. Ready to shoot.' Narrowboat? quiet staid canals.... I just realized what your obvious next step is: _Cutting the Cruise: a wide boat (catamaran or trimaran) on the high seas._ What I've only just realized (after months of trying to figure out which cat or tri I'll be able to afford -once I get my jab and learn how to sail) is that a catamaran is really two narrow boats with a studio apartment (saloon) in between. (The Leopard 45' saloon is 12' x 16' (wide) )

David... deck lights from diffused deck flush windows installed on cabin top to spread the light around... on my sail boat it lights the wood interior, with visible soft light ...no electricity, and imagine port holes for side windows, even in the slip with tall stink potters towering over the cabin and rig... I have lighted through out the cabin, no power used.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
Cheers Frank. Such lights wouldn’t be bright enough for filming without a lot of gain in the camera, which introduces noise (unwanted). Also, the idea is not to have a generally diffuse light all around, especially from overhead, as that has no “shape” to the image; it just lights everything equally. The idea is to throw light in specific directions (such as with the Godox lighting just me, by and large) but then diffusing it so as to not give harsh shadows. It’s not about the quantity of light all around but how you shape it to give definition within the image. As I mentioned, I’m far from expert at it but I know the theory 😂

Have you got any experience as to how well the inbulit video stabilisation works in the Sony ZV-1 camra for handheld footage? Do you use video stabilisation for handheld footage as part of your editing software? What software do you use for editing, and are you satisfiend with it? Do you work in 4k? Kind Regards
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
It’s pretty poor, kind of ten-year-old standard Sony stabilisation, not a patch at all on what a modern GoPro or DJI Osmo Action can do. If you stand still and just want some of the handheld wobbliness of a static shot taken out then it’s OK but not much more. I have Mercalli v4 software plugin which is excellent if I need additional stabilisation though its ideal for smoothing out movement rather than holding a static shot like a tripod. I work in 4K and use Vegas Pro 18, having used it for 20 years or so.

Fabulous info David. Just a critical question. What is causing the reflections in your specs?
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
The cause is the glass (!). The Godox light, through the paper, is the source. There is nowhere I can place it that it won’t be visible in the glass. In fact, even in larger rooms, my glasses are such high prescription that a light catches in it from pretty much any angle.
@trevorford8332
@trevorford8332 3 года назад
Have you ever thought about playing around with green or blue screens, David.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
I haven't the space to hang one plus to do it well you need distance between the screen and presenter (to avoid shadows on the screen) as well as separate lighting for screen and presenter, and it needs to be a consistent wash of light over the screen (this is all if you want to do it as best as possible) so a lot of gear and space needed.
@panagea2007
@panagea2007 3 года назад
If you mount a mirror on the ceiling you could mount the Godox low and point it upwards and still get a high 45° light.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
I like the idea but not sure it would work. The mirror would still need diffusion placed in front of it (and with some space between mirror and diffusion), plus it would need to hang down at one end to get the right angle. Plus the beam from the Godox isn’t very focused so I’d lose a lot of light to the ceiling.
@URTonemanclan
@URTonemanclan 3 года назад
though not about lighting I totally expected echo in such a confined space without acoustic tiles.... Is there just a sweet spot for sound or pure luck with where your saloon ended up?
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
It's too small a space to have any substantial echo as such, what you would just get is a tinny sound unless the mic was close. There are lots of odd angles in the boat to break up sound reflections too (and the curtains and chairs as soft furnishings to damp it as well)
@jamesdecross1035
@jamesdecross1035 3 года назад
You could diffuse the brightest light by shining the key light onto a white panel on the roof.
@UKAirscape
@UKAirscape 3 года назад
I could ... but I’d either have to mount a white panel or paint the roof, and I think that would end up with too much downward light, even if diffuse, possibly causing unpleasant shadows under the eyes etc, rather than the light coming more directly at me. I’m pretty happy with the diffusion off the key really, it’s just a bit rubbish using baking paper!!

In an ideal world, yes, but I didn’t have a suitable light on board or a way to mount it. At least... that’s what I thought. However, subsequent to this, I remembered I have a tiny Aputure light, and have found a way to dangle it - somewhat precariously - above and behind my head on an upside down mini tripod! It’s *just* enough to give me a hair light. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s-U4xD2D7CA.html
