The video I wish I watched before installing a SHELIX

This is my second time upgrading a DeWalt DW735 thickness planer with a SHELIX cutterhead, so instead of wondering how to do it, I was more interested in how I could do it better than the last time. There's always room for improvement and usually more than one way to get the job done right, but I think this video is going to make the whole process go a little smoother for anyone doing this upgrade. It might even be fun to watch. Check the comments for updated information because I ran out of room in the video description.

If you enjoyed the video and would like to see more high-quality production work, a few ways to keep the channel going include,
► Watch other videos on my channel. My next video project is often influenced by how many views, likes, dislikes, comments, and subscribers a video gets.
► Share the link with other people who might enjoy it.
► Check out the Amazon affiliate links in the description in case there's something you need.
► Use the RU-vid "Super Thanks" button under the video.
► Check out my Amazon storefront: www.amazon.com/shop/thesnekke...
► Buy something from my Etsy shops: thesnekkershow.etsy.com (woodworking stuff) and generalvarietyvault.etsy.com (non-woodworking stuff)
► Send me a tip at ko-fi.com/thesnekkershow
In case you're wondering why I'm asking for additional support, here's what went into making this video:
► The cost of the SHELIX head so I could do an installation video.
► Two months without the use of my planer, workbench, or most of my workshop.
► More than 115 GB of raw 4k and 8k video to make the 30 GB final product, not including at least 200 GB of takes that didn't get used.
► More than 40 hours of editing time.
► Video, photo, and audio editing software subscriptions.
► My desktop computer is getting old, and it took three hours to export the video with the processor running up to 100% and the fan going full speed. I had to export multiple times after reviewing the output and making adjustments.
► Two bags of Juan Valdez coffee beans. But seriously, if you're a coffee fan, check out www.juanvaldezcafestore.com/ (not sponsored, not affiliate, just good coffee).

▻ Video was recorded with a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra phone, mostly in 4k 60fps, but some was in 8k 24fps so I could record details from farther away. For the few parts where I filmed both sides simultaneously, I use a GoPro Hero 4 as the secondary camera.
▻ Audio was recorded using a Rode Wireless Go and a Rode lavalier microphone.
▻ I used Cyberlink Director Suite 365 for video, audio, and photo editing, and that's also where I get most of the sound clips and music tracks.
▻ My editing computer is a Dell XPS 8930 with a 6-core i7 8700 processor, 32 Gb or RAM, and a GeoForce GTX 1070 video card, which is surprisingly underpowered for this type of work.
Congratulations on reading all the way to the bottom. Fun fact: One of my other SHELIX-related videos resulted in Byrd Tool Experts (a distributor of Byrd Tool Corp products) contacting me for an interview, which you can see here: • Byrd Tool Experts Inte...

I hit the space limit in the video description, so here's some post-production and viewer-contributed tips: ✱ You can use a 24mm chrome socket to hammer out the small bearing, and a 35mm chrome socket on the big bearing. There may be some differing opinions about whether it's better to hit the inner or outer race. ✱ If you lose some grease from the gearcase, you can replace it with Shell Alvania EP2 or something compatible. It took two months to get this information from DeWalt, so hopefully it's right. Don't add grease unless you need to; too much is not good. ✱ Metal contracts when it's cold, so if you want the bearings on the new SHELIX to go in easier, you can put it in the freezer overnight. ✱ Some have found that a 23mm sockets fits their planer, and others find it's 24mm. There might be some variation in the nut sizes.

Great video, and I've watched several on this same install! You should pin this comment so it's the first one everyone sees. And state that it's there somewhere in the video description, if it's not there already...

An excellent and very thorough video. I must say, you have an amazing sense of humor. Not the stand up comedy kind of humor, but excellent none the less. I subbed a few months back so can't help you there, but I did give you the thumbs down click just to see if you are still paying attention..... sorry, I meant thumbs up. 😏

Between the alternate angles to show what's happening from different perspectives, pointing out why you're taking certain steps that might seem pointless, and the record levels of dad joke energy, this is honestly the best technical instruction video I've ever seen. I wish I had a video like this for every tool in my shop.

Thanks for the feedback, and I'll take that as a challenge. I'm still wondering how I ended up with 20 thickness planer videos when the router is arguably the most versatile tool in the workshop. In fact, the first video on this channel was about an aftermarket router upgrade.

I don't even have a planer (734) anymore and I watched the whole thing, even with sweetie telling my to get in the shower because she's getting the meal ready. But i learned if i ever get another planer, I will go for the 735X because if I drank as much coffee as the video requires I would sell the planer in pieces and take up the bassoon. Thanks for a fun, and very interesting video.

Yours was the best install video I found. I installed a different cutter head, but all the steps were the same. I ran into a problem trying to get the screw out of the chain tension arm. Could not do it. Finally after banging, heating and swearing, I realized that the hexagonal shaft could be unscrewed with a 10 mm wrench, which I finally did. Snap rings came out with some difficulty, but it all went back together and it is humming along. No Craigs List needed!

Nice video. Gave you a thumbs up. Here is a tip that will help guys, and gals, now you know I,m old, some grief. I,m a retired cabinet maker and I have been using those disposal inserts for years. Once an edge has become dull it is very difficult to tell the difference , by eye, esp if older, to tell the difference. Here is what you do. Before you try to rotate that insert hit that dull edge with a sharpie. After all the inserts have been removed take them to your bench grinder and just tap the dull edge. This will be very obvious as to which edge is shot. Dont even try to think you know which edges are good or not otherwise. You have 40 inserts times four equals 160 edges that could become a hot mess!

"slow is smooth and smooth is fast" - I really appreciate that segment of the video. I don't think I've seen that type of cut scene in your other videos but it's something I'd love to see more of -- taking general-skill advice and applying it to the task at hand. I understand the concept of smooth/fast from my days in software engineering but applying it my woodworking projects isn't easy.

It is indeed a challenge; I make some of my finest mistakes when I'm trying to get something done before the end of the weekend. I picked up the phrase from firearms training. People who pull the trigger too quickly usually jerk the shot towards the firing hand, miss the target, and then need more time to reacquire.

The shelix was delivered at 08:30 this morning. My neighbor who is a machinist came over at 2:30 and we had it installed by 4:00. The only thing that delayed us, he brought the wrong bearing puller. He was the brains, I was the “go-fer”. We should have it done in an hour except for the wrong bering puller. We generally followed your video, which is great. We didn’t need to go the the kitchen for foil or plastic wrap. We found that pulling the gear box was easier. The other problem was the key for the large bearing in the shelix was to big. He machined it down to fit. I had reservations on installing the shelix, and my buddy said “come on.” After watching your video, I would have no problem doing a shelix install again.

Considering this cutter head is over $400, that puts this combo over $1000. And I think this opens up a lot of other options from other manufacturers. Like the 13" from Jet which comes a helical cutter from the factory. I own neither and cannot speak to the pros and cons of each tool. However, if you already have the Dewalt this is without a doubt, the best video I've seen showing the upgrade.

Fantastic tutorial. It's great to see this done in the different perspective views. All to often in these types of videos, you only get one view and it may not be all you need to see how all of the steps come together. A big shout out to you for showing mistakes and how you overcame them. Who would have thought that the part could be defective right out of the box or to call the manufacturer? Those are the lessons best seen to believe. Thank you for your time and effort you put into making this video. Well done...👍

Very good video, exept for beating on ball bearings. I was a machinist for 49 years. With the right temperatures and exspansion these should go together by hand. Never beat on the shaft to drive the opposite bearing in; you are beating on the balls. Find a socket that will fit the inside diameter (ID) of the bearing. This is the inner race. Putting presure on this does not put pressure on the balls. For outside race (OD) use a larger socket to get bearing off OD fit. If you heat the aluminuim housing up with a hair dryer or heat gun the OD of the bearing will fall in much easier when reassembling. They make induction bearing heaters that heat up bearings to get them on shafts by hand. They make seal drivers that you can use on a flat bearing with no shafts sticking out. If you have to cool the bearings to shrink them use saran wrap to protect bearing seals from letting water in; then freeze them in ICE. It would not hurt to put the complete shaft & bearing & carbide in the freezer.

I needed to change out my jobsite planer, and well I pretty much did everything wrong and lost a part and created a headache that will be with me for a week waiting on a part…because your right about the skill set…I can do all household type work, but this is more like working on your car…and I always go to a mechanic

Fantastic video! This ranks among the best instructional videos I have ever seen. Everything explained and demonstrated, accompanied by just the right amount of humour to keep it entertaining. I don't know if you're a professional educator, but you excel at it.

Thank You!!! Followed your instructions except for getting the belt back on. I'm thinking that the issue was that this was a brand new machine that the belt had not stretched out enough for me to work it back on. so I used another youtube video using a hand squeeze clamp and got that to work. All other steps were clear and perfect. The pixilated joke made me fall off my chair! I appreciate your time and effort in producing this video!!!

I am so thankful for this video! I’m at the halfway point now, disassembly, finished and ready to go back together. I used a 1 inch socket and a short half-inch drive extender on that bearing. I too had to use the big convincer hammer. But it came out clean, undamaged.

I recently needed to swap out my blade drum on my DW735. I did not upgrade to the Shelix cutterhead but just replaced with a new part. I watched a bunch of youtubes on how to do this. I found this video the clearest and most comprehensive to follow as I made the repair. Bravo, thank you! I also found it useful to just be prepared to spend time on this. Although I planned well, there was always something - like having the right sized wrench etc. - that I needed to run to the hardware store for. So, expecting it was going to take time, meant I was not frustrated at the end of the day - but delighted! Nice work, thanks.

Exceptional video. I have the Dewalt 735 and am going to install the large SHELIX with my grandsons (summer 24), with your video. This will be very fun project for myself and I am sure with my grandsons. It is fun to do complex things and do them successfully - this video will assure my success. I am a rank amateur so I very much appreciate the detail, explanations and thoroughness in the video. A tremendous way to learn. I tend to try to do things fast and then screw it up - so your advice is well received.

I got my SHELIX a week or two ago for a pro Shopsmith planer. I hope I can get it installed in at least four hours. I tend to have to do things three times to get them right sometimes. I did replace the cutterhead in my Grizzley jointer with a SHELIX and it works great. Just took me two tries to get it to cut right so I'm really happy with it. Thanks for the very informative video, I'm sure it will help.
