Hey all! We may be delivering some not-so-great news, but boy does it feel good to finally get a video back out there! We never intended on being away from RU-vid for so long. We always feel like there are never enough days in the weeks to be able to get everything done, safe to say we've been chasing our tails trying to get back on top of everything! Anywho, once again we thank everyone for their patience and we hope you enjoy the video! Slim & Soph xxx
Hey guy's, I am glad that you decided to haul out and fix Nakama properly!! Also so glad you guy's are back and doing well!!! Enjoy guy's and safe travels
..... gotta say well done on getting the list knocked off .... love your sports car .... the new lines and sheets are pretty sweet too .... think you made the right choice getting hauled ..... marching forward with your goals is the main thing .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....
Cheers Peter, yeah we are over the moon with how she has come along, the new upgrades are making nakama feel like a whole new boat, and yes we cant wait to go for some adventures in the new whip, thanks so much for your comment, and stoked you enjoyed the vid 🐠⛵️🐟
@@SlimandSophSailingNakama .... your talking of your new whip being able to get you away from crocks made me think of the first time I happened on Steve Irwin, it was dark he was in a RIB in a muddy river ans exclaiming in his excited way that this looked like a perfect spot for them, .... mind you, where the clip start I had no idea who this guy was or what it was a perfect spot for .... he does not slide into the water, he leaps and then there is a lot of thrashing about in the water and this guy surfaces wrestling a crock .... he is all excited he has got one ..... I was like WTF, in disbelief ..... anyhow like your 15HP to get you the hell outta dodge ... I would not be hangin around either ..... thx for your reply ..... make it a rewarding week .....
Definitely a wise decision to get lifted to fix the leaks. The Kimberley is not a place to head with any known problems. Looking forward to seeing where you explore
Yeah, haha we really didn't want to, but in the end it seemed like the only sensible option we had, we certainly did not want to head out into the wilderness with leaks, bit far from a slipway out there haha, we are so keen to share what we get up to! Thanks for tuning in
Yup always better to be safe. Crocks or not. It’s a big chunk of money. But there’s no price on piece of mind. You got this and you’re going to be off in no time.
A couple of things. On our Duncanson we either epoxy resin the through hulls in or use 3M 5200. Both work fine and with the belief they are permanent fixtures. Once you get to Fremantle the Fremantle Sailing Club (FSC) offers 3 free days berthage for bona fide long distance sailors. Pens are available at reasonable??? rates or plenty of sheltered anchorages nearby, including free (Red) mooorings supplied by the Department of Transport for use up to 72 hours. Terry Baker - Past Commodore FSC
Cheers Terry, we have heard of this generous offer by FSC also utilizing the free cruising guide at the moment, such a fantastic service the offer. Appreciate the heads up, we did not know of the mooring situation that is also very handy to know!
I think especially with the remoteness fixing a problem that you’re well aware of is excellent seamanship! I can’t wait for the adventure to come let’s go 👍👍
I've missed you 💕. I'm so happy you're back. I can smell your new Dinghy and colorful lines💚💛 from here. Sorry about the unfortunate leak situation. But I know you'll be good as new soon. Looking forward to next week. Hugs from Texas sweeties 🩷😎🤠🩷
Ear to ear grins watching you fly around in the new tender 😛 Glad something worked out for you! Hoping it's an easy fix and definitely made the right call to haul out. You'd never sleep or leave the boat with a leak like that!
I was wondering where you guys went and then I remembered it's a boat, of course something came up to interrupt the "Plan". See you next week for probably not a sailing video. Keep up the good work.
Hope is going well guys….!! Sorry we couldn’t do an in-water fix for you, it wouldn’t have been good enough for your Wild West adventure…! Glad you hauled out and got it sorted, do it once, do it right. Take care & stay safe…. Cheers, Drew. (Nice hat 🧢).
No drammas really appreciate all the help you gave us, hats still going strong! and nah were happy you were honest that the fix would only last so long as it was important to us we had it done once and for all especially where we are headed, Cheers Drew. stoked to know your checking the vids out
Since Maritime Australia says you left Darwin on the 25th June and currently shows Nakama near Kater's Island W.A., I assume all is well. I certainly hope so and look forward to further adventures..
Those transducers really need an extra backing pad as well. It makes the hull locally thicker & gives something to tighten the nut down onto . It reduces the flex that cracks anything hard away (epoxy). Bed it all in well with sika 291. Mine have had 9mm plywood pads for 20yr+, just 5-10mm extra wider than the transducer itself. All solid.
Hi, happy to see the new Rocna anchor is working for you. Both our catamarans had Rocna anchors. We have sold Dash. We love following you on your adventures. Adriana & Rob, Coffs Harbour
Haha carrots are a great mid adventure fix but considering we haven't left yet would though we could do it a bit longer lasting, perhaps an epoxy coated carrot for increased lifespan
And thats what u get for throwing away MY Ladder!!!! We had this discussion a couple of yrs ago, I asked u where u got it from, because it would fit my houseboat perfectly and u said "no worries its yours" because u hated it. Then u just sailed away. So thanks Sophie, mate, Pal, Buddy, Friend serves u right...🤪🤯😛 oh shit did see the keel wobble when she was lowered down on the blocks, not good please check that out.
HAHAH !! it was you! no way, haha, ahhh we wanted to look through the comments and clarify if it was you but ofcourse in the Kaos of the time, we just needed it gone, and ofcourse had other things other than re-homing a ladder taking our priorities 😂😂 Ahh we would have loved you to have it 🥲 haha well spotted re the keel, but never fear it was a shaky camera shot that we tried to stabilise during editing but it didn't work seamlessly and hinted to a scary wobble wich we ensure you was just all part of the smoke and mirrors of camera angles and editing haha. shes rock solid Thanks for tuning in once again! don't worry the ladder while amazing when swimming was a nightmare on passage anyways...hold that probably would have been great on a houseboat 😆🤣
Another great video. Quite a few months ago I thanked you for the education, sailing north QLD and then across to Darwin. Well I'm here, so thanks again. Next stop Timor yeweeee. I'm anchored in Fannie bay now. I'm assuming you've sorted your issues and are long gone by now though? Keep the dream alive !!!!!
@@SlimandSophSailingNakama Same to you two, have an amazing safe fun filled trip. Timor is just the beginning for me. I'm loaded up with surfboards and with the Mentawai Islands in mind before the seasonal winds change. Couple of years up that way if I have my way
Hay strangers lol. So good to see you both again. You made the wright decision. All the best with the repairs. Apart from that the boat is looking fantastic. Ps, I love the new tender. Keep up the good work 💪 SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿
😂😂 we back! yeah Nakama is looking and feeling more epic than ever before, new tender is freaky nice, we still cant get over how in love with her we are❤️ Cheers for tuning in, we will try not be so long between videos for a while 😂😉
Yes definitely the best decision. You could not have gone to sea leaking that much, considering it would probably get worse. You can also never have too much Anti fouling.
yeah we figured this was just the beginning of the leak continuing to get worse. It wasn't just a few ml either so thought we would just bight the bullet and be done with it!
That sucks. However, I'm sure you will get to see the westcoast and beyond on Nakama. On the other hand I always ask myself why boats have so many underwater holes in them. Every one of them is a danger that could cause sinking. I do not have a boat now. However, in 2 years I will have one again. Sailboat. And it will be one without holes below the waterline. Probably I have to order a one-off. Anyway, good luck, fair winds and calm seas. Glad you are back!
Hi Folks, If you need anything when you get to Perth, tools, workshop etc. hit me up. I live up in the hills (but used to have a yacht at Fremantle Sailing Club) and have a decent shed! :-). Happy to help.
I have a 2.2m Avon with a 1998 Mercury 15 two stroke. You need maxi marine lifters. They help a lot and get you planing faster. I have a video in my Chanel
Have you considered that the transducers could be leaking because the wooden backplate (if you have them) have shrunk and are leaking. My boat was standing on the hard for 7 months and when I put her back in the water, both transducers leaked. I decided to play a watching game and did nothing for a few days. After three days one stopped leaking as the wood swelled up and the next day the other one also stopped. Sadly, we had other problems and she is back on the hard until next year by which time the wood will have dried out again and no doubt they will leak again when she splashes in the spring.
You will already have done the repair and gotten on your way, but a couple of things to remember for next time is first check that the hull is completely flat where the transducer is fitted if it has a curve you are best to make a hardwood backing pad shaped to the inside of the hull so the nut screws down on a completely flat surface. Secondly Sikaflex the f***k around the transducer flange and up the threads for the thickness of the hull then when tightening the nut only do it hand tight and leave overnight for the sika to dry and then next day fully tighten, if you fully tighten the nut straight away it just squeezes the sika out from around the flange. I'm looking forward to more adventures crocs and all those pesky sharks and all!
Good shout there's nothing worse than at night on anchorage listening out for leaks it's a daunting feeling ? You never really relax totally when offshore as there's always something that is either mechanical or structural ? Good luck though
Hey Slim and Soph, good to see you again. That really sucks having to be put on the dry because of the leaks. If it is due to poor workmanship from the company that installed, are they honoring the repairs free . Or is it just wear and tare. Anyways regardless you are getting it fix right this time so no worrying. and putting new coats of anti-foul is I think a good thing. Do what you can while on the dry for the short time you will be there. Again, sorry for your delay looking forward to next week. Stay safe
They replaced them the first time, but in all honesty this time round we just wanted to get going, we just hooked in to getting the work done i couldn't stand any more delays while in discussions, just had to cut our loses. yeah exactly may as well do what we can in the limited time we had there and do our best to make lemonade from the situation. thanks as always for your comment ❤️ stoked you enjoyed the episode.
Great to see y'all again ! Ill echo many of the comments in that its *always* best to fix it right before a long and semi sketchy trip. Looking forward to seeing you resume the adventure ! Take care and be safe !
Cheers for your comment, we have huge respect for the qulity of the Uma videos, they do some amazing stuff from there boat! we love that they are still kicking it on humble Uma
Very talented dingy and sailing yacht couple who are finishing a circumnavigation 7 year voyage using a vessel without all the bells and whistles ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tbh8et0KeqQ.html
In your opinion do you need a boat speed transducer? The Boat i just bought, the owner pulled it out and glassed it in. Wondering if I need to put it back depending on how useful it is. The GPS gives S.O.G
After a Darwin motor mechanic came within 1/8th of an inch of killing me by forgetting to tighten the front wheel nuts of my 4WD I couldn't recommend that anyone ask for any kind of semi-skilled service from a bush mechanic. DIY was my mantra while I lived there! I lived on the beach front at Nightcliffe so you might understand why I took a sharp intake of air when I saw you playing around with the new dinghy in that crocodile infested ocean!
Thats crazy ! BOTH were LEAKING ? Something wrong with that. But, that "sikoflex" I have no idea how to spell it but it works great, and I just hope you don't need to try to get them loose from that stuff !
Not trying to be a pessimist, but two professionally installed thru hulls leaking after only 12 months might be a sign of other issues. Any signs of rot on the stringers? Is it flexing too much? Hope you got it sorted!
Oh gee! I am so so sorry this has happened to you both. Why dies shit always happen to the best of people :( Thank you for showing us the ups... and the dowwwwwwwwwwns. I could see the real disappointment in both your eyes. I felt disappointed with you both whilst watching this vid. I know i am watching great content when i feel the emotions of/ empathise with the authors. But you two are awesome, resilient people. So heads up, and keep moving forward! I wish you all the best in your repairs. :) Also, what does it cost to lift a boat out of the water? Is it super expensive :(
Thanks Bryan, means alot, ahh haha boats have a way of throwing you curve balls 😂😂 So stoked you connect with the videos, really cool to hear that, appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. yeah its no cheap adventure, varries depending where you go obviously and hard standing day rate costs and what not, If you have time to plan it you can make the most of it but this lil last minute adventure of our cost us a few more pennies than we had planned for.
Bugger!!!! I would have made exactly the same decision-- what actually did the idiots who installed the through hulls do??? Like have they heard of sika???
Transducers. Nightmares waiting to happen Let's do some intelligent deductions here. Your Airmar is a DST Depth Speed Temp. in reality , which of those do you REALLY need ? DEPTH The others your chartplotter will provide So using a Stern Mounted Airmar ,, like the RV-200 gives you everything , PLUS Structure scan and Fishfinder useage. GET RID of those damn thru hulls any time you can. I use Raymarine Axiom 12 RV - and have the RV-200 Xducer on my stern and I sleep really well on crossings. Option B You can buy an Airmar In Hull Transducer that Senses thru the hull and not a Thru Hull. And the " Pro's " that installed it originally,, well they have a new title .... Mickey Mouse Mechanics Good Luck Guys !!!! SV HYDRA SV JAZ
