Most important of all the story is about bigotry even if everybody expect some horror. Stories sometimes have metaphor.. So first of all it's not a horror film and expectations must change to be satisfied.
GloriaC333 I loved it. If you don’t go into it thinking it’s a just a horror movie you may enjoy it more. The theme about human nature and how you can’t change it is amazing. This was a really original movie.
On the contrary, I find the core idea of The Village to be very unsettling: There are, in fact, monsters in this film, but they are not the ones that you expect. They are, in fact, our fellow human beings. The elders of the village sought to escape civilization and thought they were also escaping evil. What they fail to realize is that it is impossible to escape human nature...
This is on point. That is the underlying theme of the movie. The monsters they used to scare the younger generation into not crossing the boundaries, we're a metaphor for what they thought they had escaped, but ultimately one of their own committed a violent act in what they thought was their sanctuary. It was a very deep movie. Beautifully done.
One could also argue that they created their own monster in Noah, whose madness could have been treated in the outside world (as Lucius argues) and who became so obsessed with the monsters that he decided to mimic them
And to never expect the danger that came from who looked like the most innocent among them. In the end we're all humans with human emotions and desires. Them we can't run away from.
I was just thinking the same thing pretty much. Like you'd be a terrible person to so much as point out the years on the tombstones at the start to anyone who's never watched it. Never break their immersion and they'll stay spellbound until the end.
Theres not many soundtracks anymore that after hearing them for the first time, you start to look at life a little different. This was one of those soundtracks. Amazing!
I think one of the few great composers left is Michael Giachanio. His theme for Super 8 is mystifying, Up is bubbly, Star Trek is uplifting and adventurous, and Star Trek Into Darkness theme for Khan is horrifying.
Yes... Today's movies are awful... The village was a very underrated movie it was shot on a very nice location I always feel at home there like I've been there before....
Smitty Werbenjagermanjenson No, just further making my point. I acknowledged that this movie was not well received. I stated in my original comment that people like to be spoon fed stories in movies, and that's why this movie wasn't well-received.
This film it's a masterpiece, it has secret messages of the actual society who most of the people don't realize and understand... and over all, the film is very well done and the soundtrack it's amazing!
I found it to be symbolic of religion. Create a boogeyman to keep the masses in line. One of my favorite films. Hahn doing the score is the cherry on top.
My mom always played this movie during halloween as a young child and I only paid attention to the scary parts. Now that i'm older I rewatched this movie and realized there is so much more than just a scary red monster. This story unfolded more and more every time I watched it and now i love it to death, theres so much to it.
This was exactly the problem, yep. It wasn't a perfect movie, sure it had a few flaws and shamalayn tropes but it certainly was not bad by any stretch.
To be fair, the movie's acting is a little flat for some of the characters, but those whom played Ivy, her father, and Percy did an excellent job, in my opinion. What was not flat, however, was the story itself. Slowly unraveling as the film went on, it was a superb tale, one full of mystery and horror, and, surprisingly, love. While not an epic, triple-A blockbuster, this movie is well under-appreciated, and I heartily recommend it.
The Village is one of my favorite movies of all time, for its masterful story, soul-inspired music, and incredibly insightful and humanastic themes. I love this movie.
Baron Basparro I agree - it exploited a masterly double-barrelled psychological decoy, we were lulled into a false sense of security when the first barrel was discharged and the initial deception was unmasked, and it seemed obvious in retrospect, only to have a second barrel waiting to ambush us unsuspectedly at the end...
Yes I liked this movie very much... Myself I would give it a 7.6 it was a very well and underrated movie.... My opinion there is no 10 rated movie... The highest movie on my list is the dark knight at 8.6
+Brandon 91x I hear ya, Im from North Dakota, the fall with the threat of winter is the best time of year.....the air smells of actual fireplaces.! Then the the visual of orange and brown from what has died from trees.
What I really care about in a film, is its music. Sometimes I am not attracted, when watching a trailer, by the scene in itself, but by the music playing in the background... Music is beautiful and without music films are nothing, are dumb, are mute... are soulless.
Watch No Country for Old Men. No music at all, and it's one of the best films ever. I haven't seen The King's Speech, but I'm pretty sure that except for one scene, there's no music as well. I think your statement is quite false, but I understand what you're trying to say though..
One of the best films in the filmhistory....thank you for all the actors, director, soundtrack composer, all the people who created an experience for us:)
This story is about love and how it exists no matter the surroundings. It’s about how for love you will do and risk anything. The music is full of passion.
This movie was very unfairly judged badly as it was by the director of The Sixth Sense and everyone, including me, wanted Shymalan to make another Masterpiece but whilst The Village isn't a Masterpiece, it's a fabulous, atmospheric Movie with a wonderful, haunting soundtrack which features the beautiful Violin playing of the beautiful Hilary Hahn!
Amazing movie ! soundtrack makes me want to cry for no reason. such a great directing. these tipe's of movie's and directors like trrance malic and darran aronovski (the fountain) are my most favorite. ONLY FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE THAT CAN UNDERSTAND THIS TIPE OF ART.
YES!!! So glad you said this because I begun to listen to it and instantly thought about the BatB soundtrack and told myself I was gonna listen to it next. Glad I'm not the only one
This music is beautiful, I can't believe I haven't listened to it in years. In all the time since the movie first came out, I still get goosebumps listening to it.
This film will become a cult classic, like many masterpieces that received mixed reviews when they first came out. I think the people who like Robert Eggers movies especially will love this one.
I feel like if I was a billionaire I would probably do something similar. I love life and it's innocence. Kids grow up too fast these days. There's so much they see that kids in the past were never exposed to with social media and all of it's negatives. Life is a beautiful thing. I wish I could take everybody I know and live life like this with everyone I've ever met. Have a big family village with friends and family. Really is a good idea.
I’m with you . I’d buy colonial Williamsburg and turn it into my personal playground where my family is locked in the 1700’s. What a great century that was
One of my favorites. Stunning photography coupled with beautiful music. A movie that will always remain one of the most artistic and intruiging films I have seen.
Of all weird and stupid M. Night Shyamalan's movies, The Village and The Sixth Sense were possibly the best ones out there. The Village was my favorite film. But sadly, his films have gone downhill. Just look at "The Visit" 2015 film. My god, really, Shyamalan?!
***** Yeah, see, that's what I have been trying to explain, but I could never figure that out. The Last Airbender, I've seen only once, but I thought that was a good movie.
+Ironwing Kaiser much like with The Village, I don't think it should have been marketed as a horror movie. If you go into The Visit thinking of it as an adventure comedy/ thriller you might enjoy it
I didn't like the entire movie, "The Village" though I respected the outcome of the story. However one thing I really loved about it was the score composed by this James Newton Howard. This main theme is one of the most beautiful pieces of classical music I have ever heard. I think the violin, viola, cello, even the fiddle, any instrument played with a bow, and when played together with a piano, is the best part of any orchestra.
Yes it was put under horror. Unfortunately that happened, but it doesn't mean the movie is bad. When I watched this I nearly cried from what happened and was shocked off my couch by the twist. I love this movie despite what people rated it
You must understand; that the film was underrated, there’s so much more to it then you realize. You must dig beyond the surface, that’s what people don’t want to do therefore they call it “bad”
Add me to the list of those that loved this film. Those that focus solely on the improbabilities of the story are missing what makes The Village so special...the lead performances by Howard and Phoenix, the heartbreaking romance, the humor, and of course...the beautiful music. The score was chilling, romantic, and touching led by strings. I will always defend The Village for the superlatives rather the deficiencies.
I was gobsmacked by this movie! The psychological shock was superbly planned. When the first "mystery" was debunked, one relaxed, but this was just the first barrel that had been fired - the second barrel was waiting for us in the long grass... to say more would be the greatest spoiler.
This is not of my all time favorite movie soundtracks. This may sound a little silly, but during the fall season, this soundtrack gets me in the mood for Halloween, just because of how haunting it is.
Most people got used to Shymalan's twists-at-the-end in thrillers like The Sixth Sense. This movie was criminally under-rated, it was even lost on me when I first saw it (the shame!), but I went back to it yeas later and saw how absolutely beautiful it is.
