In this video I talk about the villains of Ultimate Spider-Man and what makes them so interesting to me. Feel free to disagree tho I'm not your mother twitter: lexanderLennen
In this video I say that Oscorp in the Raimi films was heavily involved with Spider-Man's origin, however they don't have a direct connection to the spider bite itself. I was smoking so much cardboard I mixed up Raimi and TASM. You can't legally prove me wrong tho. (also, 2x speed at the ending makes you transcend to another dimension)
They did it again in the current run lmao Some company (that will have an evil plot twist within the year) bought the trademark, hired Ben as their Spider-Man and want to sue every other Spider-People for using their likeness lmao
Norman didn't just use the sheet like a robe. He used it to replicate the attire of Greek Gods, which is an awesome callback to his complex all the way back in issue 1!
The real hero of this story isn’t Spider-Man. It’s Norman’s bodyguard cause his lazy ass thought the best way to get rid of a genetically engineered spider designed by one of the most advanced scientific companies in the world, ran by Norman Osborn, a man who has shown to throw ethics and morality out the window faster than 616 Goblin throws blondes off of bridges was to shove it in a random beaker. God bless you, you lazy Bodyguard. You taught us with great power comes great irresponsibility

@@parkerjackson4880 most villians in ultimate are just assholes, it feels so real tbh. Like I could definitely imagine all these characters to be real people.
And this is all without even mentioning Venom. I love that Ultimate Spider-Man made Eddie Brock a childhood friend of Peter growing up. The cancer aspect and ideals of responsibility around the suit was an interesting alternative take to the alien.
the one thing about Kingpin’s arrest that you didn’t mention but I found absolutely hilarious is that as far as i could tell it actually wasn’t even the plan for Fisk to get arrested, when Moon Knight woke up from getting his scalp pushed back he was just like “man what the fuck Kingpin really had me shot” and went to the police, secret identity be damned
Imagine that conversation tho “Hi, I’d like to report an attempted murder.” “What?” “Kingpin shot me.” “What? Prove it. The only one Kingpin has attacked recently was Moon Knight.” “….yeah, that’s me.”
my personal favorite of the rogues gallery that ultimate peter has faced, would be venom due to obviously how horrifying it is a suit that is supposed to help you, ends up eating you from the inside and needs to feed on others in order for you to survive. It also doesn’t help that person inside the suit, Eddie in this case, represents a friend that you once thought of as a good person, is in reality a trash human being who would rather blame others for their problems and lie if it benefits them in the end. great video by the way.
I think they did a great job of making Venom more alien than I'd ever seen him before. In the Ultimate Spider-man game he was a tank and would always growl "The hunggerrrr..." That sound clip lives on in my head to this day. Often uttered before I order a pizza, incidentally.
Honestly, that is one of my biggest fears that someone I trusted, someone I’ve known for years and even someone i’ve loved and held dear turns or was always a trash human being
Yeah yeah, comic good, but can we talk about the absolute _ballad_ this mans wrote?? The sheer emotion behind not even the lyrics, but the story, and the acapella as the instrumental adds so MUCH! Bravo!!
I remember a very emotional number from ultimate spider-man about a shocker, basically he always used as a background villain, but the comic when Peter was kidnapped by a shocker was brilliant, emotionally intense, because the Peter in him was quite helpless and defeated, plus Kitty and Mary Jane couldn't find him, even small and weak villains can be shown from a very strong side
Ultimate Spider-Man was such a good run. I literally could not put it down when i wasn’t working for about 2 weeks until i finished it. It even made the Ultimatum stories not god awful. Only thing that really sucked was seeing Bagley leave, the artist after him who did about 20 issues or so was a nice replacement and i didn’t have any problems, but holy fuck when it turned into a pseudo manga and redesigned all the characters i really wished they went with another artist. It really didn’t feel like it was the same Ultimate Spider-Man that came before it. The actual stories were well enough and i enjoyed the Aunt May taking in Human-Torch and Ice Man, but it just would have been better with a different artist. Besides that, the end is fantastic. This and The Walking Dead are some of my favorite comic runs simply because it was just mostly one writer and one artist on the same book so it felt consistent.
@Innocent Jogger I generally like Peter being shorter, but holy shit when Lafuente took over, i felt like Peter looked like a middle schooler. Maybe it was the contrast with him being so short and drawn with such huge pants and stuff, but i just felt it looked really off. Also yeah, as much as i do like the slow burn and character drama from Ultimate Spider-Man, after Ultimatum the relationship drama was just tiring and felt a little overplayed. I assume that’s why Bendis decided to end it, because he felt like he was going to have this in a constant loop.
@@TheNewWorldGaming Damn, I Love Seeing Those Stupid Kids Including You Loving Ultimate Spider-Man And Spider-Verse More Than 616 Spider-Man. BECAUSE THIS COMIC BOOK SERIES FUCKING SUCKS!!! AND REAL SPIDER-MAN FANS INCLUDING MYSELF CELEBRATE ULTIMATE PETER'S DEATH BECAUSE WE KNOW 616 SPIDER-MAN IS THE TRUE SPIDER-MAN!!! GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON WHY ULTIMATE TOXIC-SNARKY KID IS BETTER THAN THE OG 616 SPIDER-MAN!! WAIT, YOU CANNOT, BECAUSE YOU WANT TO HATE STAN LEE!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
The way that Ultimate Spider-Man is written when it comes to its villians is so interesting. Like you said in this video with Kingpin sure he's a big/brolic man, but his character is at its best when he uses his words. And Ultimate Spider-Man really explores that side of his character, that side where he doesn't have to hit you with a haymaker, when a foolproof threat can do the trick. The way that Norman devolves from Arachne to Athena, which is shown throughout the comic and talked about with his story in the beginning. Shows me that the writers for this comic really planned for him to devolve into someone that lost their way, or maybe have always been twisted in the head. They get the core aspects of these villians down to a tee and write them in ways that the MCU would LOVE to achieve but can't lol. The pacing, writing, the evolution/devolution of the characters, the worldbuilding, and totally understanding Spider-Man and his character makes this my favorite Spider-Man comic for sure. These are the same reasons why I love Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Into The Spider-Verse so goddamn much because they truly understand these characters, and when you understand the characters that you're adapting, you can truly write and create something special...amazing maybe.
The song in the end is incredible, definitely worth the wait. Also, you should do a video about Bendis making ultimate Peter and Norman immortal and doing other weird shit in his Miles Morales run, and maybe try to figure out what the fuck is going on with the ultimate universe now, it’s been popping up a lot in the recent comics.
Tl;dr In the early 2010s Marvel tanked the reputation of the Universe with crappy events and then merged the ultimate and 616 universes. Then Bendis left for Dc comics which i guess pissed marvel off enough to want to scrub the existence of the ultimate universe even though some writers really want to bring back the ultimate universe
@@sergeichernitsyn2034 at least the spider man ultimatum tie-in was pretty good and really advanced the plot, but the rest might be the worst event ever written
I think you can tell when a creator will get big, it’s usually when the creator has something new to offer to the comunity. It’s so awesome to witness it. Good looks Alex I love your writing style shit just keeps getting better and better.
There's also the part when Norman answers to Peter after he tells him that all of this won't bring back his reputation, company and son back and Norman just says: "Yes...but you will be dead" And pete just says: "Fair enough"
You are 100% right, all the villains (mostly except for the oneshot type villains or one arc villains) having the more personal connection to Peter or Spider-man makes it more real and honestly more scary. Theres nothing scarier than a giant green monster that throws fire and is willing to throw said fire at your family if you don't admit he owns you lmfaoo that shits so wild Norman is just nuts
@@JosephFlores-yn4yi thats the whole thing though, even in the end, it wasn’t a purposeful idea to kill Spider-Man. This was supposed to be another demonstration to prove to Spider-Man that he owns him. Norman would go to the ends of the earth to make Spider-Man his to own until the day he died and Spider-Man was willing to die fighting agains’t that blatantly insane idea
I really want to see a tv show that accurately adapts the entire Ultimate Spider-Man series to tv but have some differences in a similar manner to Invincible. Now that I think about if Invincible ever adapts that Spider-Man/Invincible crossover from the Marvel team up series they could use that Spider-Man
@@hattoripool1533 and i said there's 0 possibility, i can also say they might adapt invincible meeting batman the tick or the avengers but wtf makes you think the animated show is gonna do that?
@@igorz4582 I agree it's practically impossible, but that's more due to licensing/copyright rather than popularity. Because lets be real, even if the general public has never heard of the original story anything with the Spider-Man brand slapped on it will most likely sell well.
Man, that ending was so unnecessary and so long. I enjoyed every second of it. Great video, I love Ultimate Spider-Man, it's definitely my favorite version of the character (except for the haircut). Very much enjoyed listening to you talk about it!
I read Ultimate Spider-Man because of your original video so thank you for that. I completely agree with your take on the villians, I usually find 616 Norman to be very boring his connection to Peter is flimsy at best, but this version is paticularly vicious while still maintaining consistent motivations throughout the story.
I find 616 Norman more interesting when he’s in an elf costume, but ultimate Norman is interesting without the goblin persona.(but the goblin is still cool)
@@spider-jonah-man7148 I love the design for 616 Green Goblin, I’m all up for wacky colorful villians. My main issue with 616 Norman is that He always shows up out of nowhere to be the big bad at the end even when it doesn’t make sense like in Superior Spider-Man.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. By the time I finished Ultimate Spider-Man, I completely forgot about the Arachne/Athena myth that Norman referenced in the first issue. It tied up so nicely with the rest of his character, and you bringing it to my attention increased my appreciation for the series even more. Great work as always, I'm already excited about your next video, I know it'll be a hit no matter what it turns out to be about. Also, the song at the end made me laugh!
This is such a good story and ends in a grand way with the death of both peter and norman. Thank god these two dont come back to life for no reason essentially ruining this ending😌
I feel like Bendis was so eager to tell these stories and have this giant impactful moments that he had a tendency to rush from arc to arc quickly setting up villains, have the big fight where Peter loses, challenge Peter's ideals and morals, Peter bounce back and defeat them, and all of this in the matter of 3-4 issues. This interpretation of Norman is different than what I'm used to, but I love the idea of him and he has some incredible moments. Still, he's the best example of rushing that villain cycle. They introduce the idea of him knowing about Peter and studying him from the distance, then an issue later he becomes the goblin and becomes defeated. They introduce the idea of Norman owning Peter and that he has to work for him now that he's back, and then an issue later he's put back in jail. This kind of thing happens every time he comes back. The Kingpin however was such a strong character and one of the few villains Bendis really took his time with and fuck Kingpin became my favorite Spidey villain because of the Ultimate Spider-Man run. I can even defend how he got killed off suddenly by Mysterio without any heroes present because it fits with his story. He considers himself grand, yet is killed off easily by someone who then was a nobody. I know Kingpin is often associated with Daredevil, and I get why totally, but he is just such a beast of a well written character that he can become "The Joker" of an antogonist to two heroes (two heroes that barely interact with each other as well). I also think that's why that moment with Daredevil almost killing Kingpin works so well as Peter also has a lot of stake into this villain. If Peter had barely interacted with Kingpin then him saying it's not worth it could have been seen as a little disengenous, but Peter fully understands what this man is capable of and understands how personal Wilson can be with his threats, yet Peter's morals as Spider-Man is enough to convince Daredevil to not go down that dark path. It's my favorite moment of the entire Ultimate run. That and Kingpin owning the merchandising rights to Spider-Man, hands down biggest power move any villain can commit.
Snapping the guy's neck is a generous description for when The Kingpin straight up Oberyn Martell'ed his underling. Those books really pulled no punches, im rereading the early stuff now and intending to finish this time, and your coinciding coverage has been fantastic, thank you!
@@therandominfochannel6619 Y'know Kravens last hunt taking place on the ultimate universe would have made way more sense since 1610 is far darker Basically what I'm saying is 616 and Ultimate Kraven should switch places
Yeah, a lot of villains got shafted in the run. Hell, I think Rhino’s only appearance in the series has him be defeated by Iron Man off panel and Peter never even gets to fight him/interact with him. Though I could very well be forgetting other appearances he had in the series.
There's something especially unbelievable about the calmness with which Norman threatens Peter and his family once he returns from seemingly dying in the river, Bendis may be a pretty awful writer for his work for the most part (Guardians of the Galaxy, Civil War 2, Superman etc.), but Ultimate Spider-Man is written with a passion that I don't know if I'll experience again with a comic of this character, thank you for finally talking about a work and some characters that I feel are not talked about enough these days. Anyway this video rocks dude plz keep going with this type of quality
As great as this video is, I just want to point out a correction for something around 3:00 In the Raimi Spider-Man films, in particular, Spider-Man 1, the spider has nothing to do with Oscorp. It's created by the Columbia University genetics/research lab, where the field trip is taking place. Norman is connected to Peter through Harry alone, which is more like classic comics than the Ultimate comics, the Ultimate comics being what The Amazing Spider-Man definitely took more direct inspiration from.
*Spoilers for miles morales current series* I love how this video conveniently leaves out the reveal that both Peter and Norman are immortal and that there both alive lol. That idea Was awful but I can’t help but feel that Bendis had something planned before secret wars cut miles Time in the ultimate universe short. While bendis dose have moments that are Truly awful/ pointless in some of his stories, I feel like he was always more careful with ultimate Spider-Man. I personally don’t care for miles in the main universe, I get that they only did it to make sure he survives secret wars but I feel like a element from those stories is now missing with him just being the second Spider-Man in the main continuity. I love Mike’s current series but that’s mostly cause I get the feeling that it’s gonna end with Mike’s going home, with the return of ultimate Norman and the introduction of ultimatum n all. Once miles goes home I hope they finally continue the story that was set up years ago. I guess that Peter could of just retired but if you remember at the end of Spider-Men 2 we see that he’s now an ultimate, so he’s definitely still active. Id love for marvel to do a series showing what ultimate Peter was doing while miles was mind wiped and stuck on earth 616. I just miss the ultimate universe as a sandbox for Spider-Man (not as a whole, my god not as whole lol) and hope that at some point we return there weather it’s with miles going home or showing the reader what Peter has been up too sense he came back to life. Great video man.
maybe spoilers? for ultimate charcters? another thing is that ultimate universe may return because it was revealed in a venom issue that 1610 still exists (in chaos but still). perhaps they will bring it back? maybe not- but miles was not the only one who actually made it to 616, the maker (aka ultimate reed richards. evil supervillian) also survived then went back to 1610. I actually do not know if there are current ultimate comics ongoing or not though.
New York Comic Con 2023: Marvel announced that the Ultimate Universe is back. Ultimate Spider-Man is being written by Jonathan Hickman. Hickman has said he's doing a "Peter B Parker" kinda thing. Maybe that means that Ultimate Peter will be the one to have a wife and kid.
Dang, this video is pretty dang incredible. Excellent analysis as per usual, the humor that is always spot-on, and of course… The end song. 👌 I am so glad that these end songs are becoming a bit of a tradition. They’re brilliantly edited, well-sung, and with good music, and they’re perfectly hilarious. 😂 So yeah, great job Alex.
That Kingpin scene with Daredevil almost killing Vanessa reminded me of DD season 3 finale (of course with Spidey and Daredevil's morality both being in the Netflix version of Murdock)
AM I THE ONLY ONE...WHO JAMMED OUT TO ALEX'S SINGING IN THE END 💀. Vro...You earned a sub, You made me feel like I was in 2012 again watching old youtube.
I’m glad you made this video. So many people call Ultimate Goblin bad just because of his design, when this is really one of his best incarnations out there
Might be a bit late for you to see this, but I wanted to tell you I really enjoy your content and think you're genuinely one of the best RU-vidrs who discuss comics in an intellectual and reflective manner. Your scripts are a great balance of comedy and information and your narration is lively and well-paced. I've gone through all your videos and my biggest gripe is that there aren't enough! I'm glad I discovered your channel and I look forward to your growth and more videos to come. Your content definitely deserves more attention from the comic fans of RU-vid and I'm sure if you keep it up it'll come. Keep doing you. Take care.
I read a little Spider-Man when I was younger and absolutely loved it. Your videos got me back into the series and a whole new perspective of the comics in general. Great videos !!
this is still my absolute favorite version of the green goblin bc he actually feels threatening and near invincible. hes a genius, sociopath, narcissist, and a corrupt businessman. hes a monster on the inside who becomes monstrous on the outside, reflecting his increasing power which amplifies the rest of his negative traits as a human being. i really wish we would get a version of the goblin similar to this one in the movies or in the insomniac universe, hes way more menacing as an actual monster than just a psycho in a suit with super strength
Naw man, Green Goblin in No Way Home is the epitome of a monster, that mfer went hard Ultimate Green Goblin was the best before that though, I will agree
Great analysis! One villain I also think was done brilliant in the Bendis run was the Shocker. In the comics he is just a joke and at first it seemed that the ultimate comics would go in this same path only for one issue to change all, with Shocker not only capturing Spider man (showing that he is not that incompetent) but his dialogue with Peter really shows he is just a poor tragic guy who turn to crime after his life was screw over by companies (in other words he is another victim of corrupt criminals like Fisk and Osborn).
I'm real excited for the future of this channel. Wasn't too long ago the channel was at 10k subscribers, and you're already almost at that 50k mark! Well deserved, Alex, keep it up! I just started rereading Ultimate Spider-Man on New Year's Eve, after watching your first USM video, for the first time since grade school. Exactly one month later, down to the day, I finished the whole run (including the tie-ins, Ultimate Six, Annuals, Ultimatum, and Fallout). Thanks for inspiring me to pick the series back up! It was an absolute blast, and it's my favorite interpretation of Peter/Spidey. I feel you've hit a niche that hasn't been explored in-depth much by mainstream comics RU-vid, and I'm digging the content. Glad to be part of the ride!
I gotta thank you for introducing me to Ultimate Spider-man, you made me read all 160+ issues in one day, made me fall in love with the universe and all the characters and finally gave me depression from his death. It's been about a month and I haven't recovered. Keep doing ur type of content!
This was amazing! you called attention to a lot of plot points I forgot about in ultimate Spider-Man and made the villain's seem like demons who make armies against Spider-Man, but you didn't talk about the bad as i hope you would when Bendis decided to shit the bed and bring Norman back to life again and how kingpin came back to New York only to be killed my Mysterio(long story) without saying any final words. That was my main issue with ultimate spider-man, is that some of the villians didn't get the "screen" time needed to fully bring them up to status
Great video man! So awesome seeing Ultimate Spider-Man analysis on youtube, which have been lacking. Ultimate Norman has always been interesting to me and FINALLY someone makes a proper video on him! Again, great video!
I love ultimate Spider-Man and the villains in this book were super interesting especially Peter Parker vs kingpin stories were personally my favorite fights between hero and villains dynamic in this book.
i love this channel because i got into USM last summer and like no one talks about it now!! but it’s so good and i’ve been recommending it to a lot of people, i’m glad it’s getting the attention it deserves! middle part peter ftw
Great summary. Love the use of Arachne's myth. Ultimate Spidey is my all-time favorite comic series, thanks for the great video. Also the song at the end.
That ending was AMAZING and I need you to put it on all possible music streaming platforms. Also you're rapidly becoming one of my favorite creators! I'm not even a big comic fan but your videos are converting me 🙏 always so funny and perfectly edited + your voice is so nice to listen to! Keep it up!!
Literally just started reading the comics and I started this exactly one because of you The MJ dying joke caught me off guard 😭 More spider man videos pls
If they ever want to bring Norman Osborn or Oscorp into the MCU, which they probably will. Have them be this, not a guy in a suit that goes crazy after ingesting a formula. Have it be an insane man with a huge ego, that transforms into this demon-like monster of a green goblin. The reimagining would make a lot of sense after Tom Holland knows about the green goblin he already fought. Give him his own goblin.
Doing the monster goblin would do really well to differentiate from Defoe goblin too, especially in the fight scenes since we’ve already seen him and Peter fight. Also, love suit goblin cause of how goofy he is (like how the tf does his mask work?? Istg that’s face paint or something) but Ultimate Spidey made Monster Goblin my fave. Love the way it leans on that Jekyll and Hyde imagery, but subverts it by having Norman be just as much of a monster in his human form.
@@Fluhhber While I’m not as big of a fan of the Ultimate Goblin as the 616 one, if they do bring 19999999 Norman into the films, that’s the version that they’ll likely go with.
