The Virginian Heritage Unit Crew Change at Bristow, Virginia

Norfolk Southern’s 203, The Virginian Heritage Unit stopping at Bristow, Virginia for their crew change which they always do here. The train started in Rutherford, Pennsylvania and runs down to Atlanta, Georgia. I just made it to this location about 2 minutes before I could see the light on the unit coming up the hill. As the new crew came on board I changed my location to get a shot of him starting up. I was just below the tracks on the side of the road closest to the tracks. I got a few nice still shots of the train when I heard a vehicle coming down the gravel road behind me. So at that point I moved to the far side of the road. Here comes 3 vehicles so I watch as they get closer, the first one goes up to the crossing and stops. The other 2 stops where I had been standing and who opens the door of the first vehicle is my friend Railfan Rowan. The 2nd vehicle is Daniel Simon another dear friend. No he is no relation to me, he always gets asked that question, LOL ! So we film the Virginian taking off and stand and talk for several more minutes as another train (228) passes us.

The blond is Railfan Rowan, he is well known with the younger crowd. The young guy with him is Daniel Simon ( no, no relation) he takes mainly stills and uses a drone many times. Bob was behind me so you missed seeing him, he’s been in a few of my vids before. I always enjoy talking with the crew, let them know we appreciate their work. Almost didn’t get to Bristow in time to see them arrive, thank goodness I got there just before they did. Thanks for watching my video and I’m happy you enjoyed it :-))

What is your first favorite NS heritage unit ? I think my favorite is the one I haven’t seen before and is on its way ! LOL. First time I caught this was about midnight and it was trailing, then a few days later caught it up in Pennsylvania a few times on a chase. I’m glad you enjoyed watching my video, Thanks :-))

Thanks, last year and this year has been good for me catching these Heritage Units, it also helps that I have some wonderful friends that give me the heads up. Some times I look thru my train groups on FB and I’ll get some information on what might be coming my way. I do like seeing the heritage units too or any foreign power. I’ve seen very little foreign power this year, not like it’s been in the past for me. Thanks for watching my video, I’m happy you enjoyed it :-))

This makes the third time I’ve caught this in the past 45 days. The first time it was trailing and about midnight, the second time was in daylight and we chased it to several locations in Pennsylvania on a rail fan trip. The crew was very nice, I ran into several other fan friends. You can see two young friends in the middle and at the end of this video. I had a great time while out there in Bristow, VA. Nice catch!! I caught them this morning around 6:15 am on my way to work. Unfortunately it was still dark outside with no lighting, so I just watched as they rolled by. I caught it before a few months ago on 213 at the station by CP Magnolia in Spartanburg, SC.

Does your daughter have her own channel on RU-vid ? Does she watch other train videos ? Most of the girls love to see Rowan, he’s so cute they say. Drew, are you on Facebook? I belong to many train groups and they always try to be the first to tell you that they just caught a heritage unit. That might give you a heads up if they are in your area, also heritageunits.com might help, just pay attention to the time they were reported last and direction. Good luck my friend :-))

I belong to many railroad groups on FB, some you can’t join because you don’t railfan in these areas BUT I will send you some groups you can join. BNSF, UP, NS, KCS & Major Railroads Trains Rule The Iron Highway Railfan Friends USA NS 800 And 700 Series Coal Trains Fans of all steam locos US railroad appreciation society I Love Trains Friends of the 611 These should keep you busy, LOL ! And I belong to many more that are in my area. Once you put in a few, then FB starts offering you other groups. Have fun ! Oh and Railfan Rowan is a very good church goer, LOL

Thank you, this is where several of the trains (Intermodal) have their crews change. This is a little further out than where I normally catch trains at the wye in Manassas. I was lucky to make it to this location just before the train did. I knew he would have to climb up a hill and go slow in order to stop once he got to the top. But I had never taken one road my GPS told me to go to go around traffic. But I’m glad to have caught it, then ran into 3 rail fan friends and caught another train as it passed a few minutes later. This was the third time I caught this heritage unit. I’m so thankful for my friends that give me the heads up about special trains coming thru the area. Ah, so you watched one of my older videos. The trains no longer have crew changes there anymore except if the crews time was up. I used to really like going there to watch the crew change. I could always count on NS’s 203 getting there at 6pm or NS’s 214 getting there when they were scheduled to. Thank you for watching my video. Oh no, I hope you recover quickly ! This is also a bad time for allergies and they can end up becoming infected and make you feel bad. I had to do the same last year, and after my accident I'm having problems getting anything done out on top of that, I don't have wifi at home and have to go out for it. Now all the places I've used WiFi are closing its even more difficult. Oh yeah my iPad froze for 2 weeks, finally got it to where I could delete some older projects and it freed it up. Nice, I Saw The Virginian Unit Earlier That Same Year This Was Published In Downtown Altoona, PA, The Same Week I Caught #8099. However It Was At Night, So It Wasn't As Fun.

It always seems to be fun until after you try to look at pictures or videos in the night. My friend Mike uses his iPhone and it does an excellent job in low light, he has it set on a specific setting and it works great. I also caught this at night, which was my first time seeing it. I've never heard the term pusher, I know if helpers, they must be the same thing. Do pushers have a crew ? I know of helpers using crews and are on the back of the train so they can release and go back to help other trains get around the mountain.

I don't know about the engines, I've only been a Rail fan a few years and never thought about what type of locomotive was better than another. I just love the trains and of course the locomotives that I see not inside. I'm not into that part of rail fanning. It's all Greek to me.

Cool ! And yes it is Railfan Rowan, I wrote his name on the vid I thought. I’ve known him for a few years and I will be seeing him again tomorrow. He got here just before the train started taking off. He said that his camera broke and his phone had a problem while trying to film this train.
