THE VISIONARY FANTASY ART OF CARLOS SCHWABE HD

Since I retired from illustration and teaching in 2015 I've discovered an embarrassingly large number of illustrators who I previousy had no idea existed. But I don't think any have come as such a pleasant surprise as Carlos Schwabe. As you may know I tend to favour the humorous side of illustration, and humour is strikingly absent from Schwabe's work. But that matters not one bit and I'm astounded by the aesthetic qualities and imagination which define his body of work. I hope you will feel the same.

I'm starting to feel like I was home schooled in a bunker in Idaho. I have never heard of this artist until 10 minutes ago, and now I'm going spend who knows how long looking up his work. And I agree, I'm surprised his work isn't more popular in the circle of modern artists who, now, seem to be creating ersatz copies of his doodles. Really amazing stuff, so dark and disturbing and yet mostly classical. Thank you.

I'm always amazed how you come across all these fabulous illustrators, Pete. I'm dying to see your reference library! ;-) During my own art school days, fantasy and sci-fi art was all the rage (those days illustration was still a fine art and something worth pursuing) so I was introduced to the likes of Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Frazetta, even Margret Brundage (another artist worth her own video, BTW) etc., master draftsmen all, but no mention of Carlos Schwabe. Thanks as always for introducing us to yet another forgotten master illustrator.

Hi again and thanks as usual for your positive reaction to the video. I've only been aware of his work for about a year but what a remarkable talent (even if not my usual taste). And dont get over-ecxited about my 'library'. Most of it - admittedly not all - is downloaded from the various digital archives that exist, thanks to the wonders of the internet.

PS Ms Brundage has featured in my women in illustration video and will also be prominent in my pulp magazine illustration video, when I finally get the damn thing finished. Gloriously weird.

Pete, you can certainly take pride in bringing this interesting and talented artist-illustrator to a wider attention. Masterfully done, and beautifully supported by the music of Satie. I must confess to liking Schwabe's darker work over his milder images. I think you're spot on to identify his illustrations of Olive Schreiner's Rêves as pen and ink imitating wood engravings, the clue being the cross-hatch shading that lacks that woodengraving quality, plus the W/E medium does not appear to show up in his other work. As usual, a most entertaining and informative video presentation. Thanks

What an interesting artist. I think I have seen some of his works in my old collection of Studio magazines. I notice that the artist/illustrators working from circa 1890 until the innovation of photographic reproduction (1905) reflect the arts and crafts period of William Morris, like the wallpaper designs, and the decadance of Aubrey Beardsley in his art nouveau best. Walter Crane and Howard Pyle for example, displayed this gothic tendency in their book illustration too. Thanks so much Pete for bringing Schwabe to light.

I am another who never heard of this artist. Really amazing works! I can understand why some of his darker works are not in the public view, but why aren’t the others? Great job bringing him literally out of the closet. I cannot wait to see what you will present us with next.

My partner and I agreed that Schwabe is probably the most confusing artist you've covered, mostly because of the wide range of reactions that we had. We found his work to be, variously, sublime, ingenious, beautiful, clumsy, innovative, crass, naive, cynical, exquisite, breathtaking, annoying, and boring. If it were April 1, I would assume that you'd concocted a fictional illustrator to play with us by juxtaposing random pieces.... Of course, this is not a criticism. I'd be very disappointed if you only showed us illustrators that we all liked!

Thank you for yet another wonderful contribution, towards keeping the incredible work of these past master artists alive. Have never heard of Schwabe before you shared his amazing work with us. When I took a look at his Wikipedia page, I found it lacking in details about his personal life, which might have been interesting.

Very interesting. Mucha is my favorite, but now that you brought Schwabe to my attention i feel he is really the father of art nouveau! The lyrical interpretation, slender bodies, and mycorrhizae-like network of images that create a sexy alchemy!!! I would love to see all his work together! Thank you!!!

Beautiful art indeed. The quiet narrative strength of Norman Rockwell, the Subdued and graceful approach of Klempt. But with a bit of the madness of Gustav Dorë and Salvador Dahli. His frankly stunning female figures pierce the page and haunt the eye. His strong sense of design and spiritualist resonance seem to be echoed in the album art of the 60'and 70's psychedelic era. One wonders what an "Alice in Wonderland" might have looked like under his hand.

Mr Beard..Pete. I have come across the odd piece by Shwabe down the years but never so many at once like this.He has such an elegant and satisfying line and subtle colour that I had to keep stopping the video to take them all in. A lot of his work has such contemporary style and you’re right it’s hard to understand why he isn’t much more well known. Shwabe seems to have elements of so many other artists that I love but his restrained colour and compositions are original and wonderful. Pete thank you so much for this I shall certainly try to find more of his work in print or in the flesh. I enjoy all of your video shorts, I never studied art at college (to late now sixty two!)but you would have been my dream lecturer. Any chance of a piece on Austin Spare? or possibly sci-fi book cover artists like: Chris Foss,Patrick Woodroffe,Chris Moore,Melvyn Grant, Peter Andrew Jones,Virgil Finlay etc..a great many to choose from, not as high-brow but popular I’m sure. Cheers!

Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of this video, and the channel in general. I must admit Schwabe was a total revelation to me when I happened upon it while looking for something else entirely. And many thanks for pointing me in the direction of Austin Osman Spare - somebody else I'd never come across. I'll investigate and see how much information and visual material I can gather. A video about Virgil Finlay is almost complete, and I've been working (intermittently) on a video about the history of science fiction illustration, and those you mention and others will of course be included. But don't hold your breath - there are a long line of other videos before it in the queue. Fingers crossed I don't fall off my perch just yet...

Thanks very much for presenting this, Pete! I too, was utterly unfamiliar with Schwabe's work, either his paintings or his illustrations. And have never come across it in symbolist, fantasist or art nouveau books. It seems some artists just drop through the cracks. Well, it may be late in the day, but I'm happy to have come across his art. It bares some similarities to Gustave Dore, William Morris and W. Holman Hunt. And although he's never made any mention of it to my knowledge, I can't help thinking Barry Windsor-Smith may have been partially influenced by Schwabe (along with Mucha and others).

Hi again and I'm glad you found his work of interest. Why he is such a well kept secret I have no idea.
