Geebz!! I'm glad you're revisiting Starset! I'm actually friends with their drummer! It's been really fun and exciting to see them grow and explode. It legitimately warms my heart when I can see people getting into them. Personally, my favorite songs of theirs are "Other worlds than these" and "Telekinetic", but you really can't go wrong with their entire catalog.

Damn that's cool. I can't imagine knowing any of these creative minds. They've been my favorite since 2014 when I first heard them on Pandora. Been a wild ride.

I finally have a musical peice that you've not heard...berynth - dopamine There are 3 versions...electric guitar alone, electric guitar with full background......and clasical guitar in an abandoned cathedral....is amazingly lifting.

Yasssss, Starset is my favorite band of all time! No bad songs in the entire catalog, but my favorite album, both of theirs and just in general, is Vessels. Ricochet (which you already did), Bringing It Down, Into The Unknown, Everglow, Unbecoming, you can't go wrong with anything by them. Actually, I would recommend their cover of Kashmir. The only legit version on RU-vid is the touring drummer's "cover" with the Dublin (OH) Taiko program. Look up Adam Gilbert drum cover Starset Kashmir.

This album in particular (Transmissions) is interesting/impressive because not only did Dustin Bates write it without a band, but he also released it without being signed. It got picked up by Razor & Tie (later turned Fearless) after he released it on his own and the singles were getting radio play. By the way, they now perform with 7 live members - vocals, (baritone) guitar, bass, drums, violin, cello, and keys/synth/a little backup guitar. Only Dustin, the singer, writes and records, though. The albums are all recorded with session musicians, e.g. Luke Holland (formerly from The Word Alive, currently tours with Falling In Reverse, but he seems to be the session drummer of choice in the heavy music scene - for good reason, he's incredible) did the drums on the Divisions album and the collab remake of Waiting on the Sky to Change with Breaking Benjamin, and Isaiah Perez (Phinehas) did drums on Horizons.

I saw them on accident. I went for Smash Into Pieces and when I told the people around me I wasn’t staying their reaction told me I should wait for it. The stage production was amazing, and they sounded great. The audience was crazy engaged. There was, however, something that really bugged me, and I am really interested in some input. During the first half of the performance, all the men were completely covered in space suits, while the girls were wearing tiny shorts and essentially strapless bikini tops. I kept thinking about what my daughters, who are still very young, might take from that. If you’re a woman, do you have to show more skin to belong on the same stage as your male band mates? Is it pandering to the audience? Maybe they just feel strong and powerful that way. I don’t have any judgement at all towards the performers, but it’s definitely a purposeful choice, and it definitely took away from an otherwise amazing show. I am genuinely interested in people’s opinions…hopefully.

@@rob3040 this is something that has been brought up with Dustin before. The short answer is that the ladies choose to wear them. The longer answer is that Siobhan and Z prefer these stage costumes to their former, more gender neutral ones, and they feel like powerful, badass women in them. Also, they appreciate that these costumes keep them cooler because it gets HOT on stage. If either of them had a problem with it, they would happily be accommodated and wear something closer to what the guys wear. The costumes are meant to be sexy, yes, but they also dress according to the lore behind the band. For the Horizons headliner demonstrations, they started out in either New East (the futuristic white with black accents) or rebel gear (the post-apocalyptic, steampunk goggles, tattered, sand people looking outfits) and then during intermission (a propaganda video about the BMI, brain machine interface) they changed into the old school costumes, with the original 3 touring band members in space suits (although Adam, the drummer, stopped wearing his space suit mask at some point because it was too constricting), Dustin in his nerdy scientist getup (bow tie, glasses, and a black coat; he throws the bow tie and glasses into the crowd after every show), and Cory and the ladies in black outfits.

I saw the notification for this and immediately got excited. I love Starset! I’ve seen them in concert once about 5 years ago or so, and it’s the only concert I’ve gotten VIP access for out of the many concerts I’ve seen over the years. It was a really cool and fun experience for sure.

Ok I’ve heard most of the track now. I think I don’t like his accent, but I think the bigger problem is in post. Something about that style of vocal effects / engineering just drives me crazy, and it’s everywhere in music. Makes it sound fake and generic at the same time, too my ears. I enjoyed the song from an instrumental perspective.
@derrickc6125
@derrickc6125 Год назад
Yea its just his voice. It's ok to not like a voice even though they are clearly good at singing they just don't strike the right chords for your ears.
@yhamez
@yhamez Год назад
@@derrickc6125 that’s fair. I do think it’s a bit of both in this case. Not sure if it’s some chorusing or autotune or what, but I hear a similar effect all over the place. I end up listening to quite a few bands where I don’t exactly like the vocals because it’s hard to find similar instrumentation with better vocals. Take what you get, I guess!
@lc81002
@lc81002 Год назад
@@yhamez it's funny, I've heard people react to Starset for the first time and say that Dustin has some kind of European accent they can't pinpoint. He's from Ohio, haha. And he doesn't really have much of a regional accent when he talks. But he does make some unique choices in how he pronounces certain words when he sings. One that comes to mind is how he says "surrender" in Bringing It Down, especially live.
@yhamez
@yhamez Год назад
@@lc81002 interesting! I was thinking of an American accent that I can’t quite place. Kinda reminds me of the way some pop punk singers pronounce things. It works for some music but drives me a little crazy in some genres. Vocals are such a particular thing. Thanks for the info, really appreciate it!

a new song just came out, and despite being a very full sound has so much changing at the edge of the soundspace. VERY interested in seeing how the hell they accomplished this: it sounds like you're in a multi-hall acoustic chamber or cave system and the people are in different halls. Saw it premiere with the band in chat, and I still missed a ton. Earthside - Let the Truth Speak. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IxrRwoRODmo.html

Geebz. 1-2-3-4. "Pick it up" Starset! Jazz will never die. The strings are cool but... 1. 2. 3. 4. A-major? The resolution is weak and synth. EDIT: Fluffy resolve... you taught me well.

It heartwrenching watching locals saying they were winning rhe fight against the fires and saving their homes in some areas...then they had all their water turned off....what the actual????😥

if you like starset, i highly suggest listening to ricochet. i also really cannot recommend downplay enough. dustin bates is also the leader of downplay, it’s older music and when he was younger, so he voice sounds a bit strained due to his youth, but the music is still amazing
