A new form of tourism has emerged these past few years, from the need/want of more and more people to "help out" or "give back". Whatever these expressions actually mean.
Known as volunteer tourism or voluntourism, this new trend is the fastest growing market in the tourism industry and generates millions of dollars of profit every year. The definition of voluntourism is still very blurry and there truly is a need for more research in that field.
Intrigued by this new form of tourism, I set out to do a round the world trip a year and a half ago, starting in South America, through Australia to end up in South East Asia. On my way I have met with volunteers, directors of local organisations and expert on the topic of voluntourism. My conclusions will all be compiled in a documentary that I am currently editing and that will hopefully be out by the end of the summer. Here's a little sneak preview !
