Reaching the point where the high isnt worth the risk sounds like a sad and inescapable ending, but the way you managed to describe it, it indeed it the fullest realization. And its an incredibly beautiful eye opener for me to interpret it this way...
@simplehonestmusic2261
@simplehonestmusic2261 Год назад
@@offbeatwithcookie Thanks. Glad my description was of some value to you. Idk how old you are. I'm 29. I have so many more responsibilities now and people who depend on me. I can't break into a skate spot and risk a trespassing charge or vandalism. I can't risk breaking an ankle and being unable to work. It's been a very poignant progression for me, where my identity of sports has had to take a side seat to my adult identity. But I do think it's, as you said, an inescapable fact of life.
@xxxx-rn3yu
@xxxx-rn3yu Год назад
I don't think its an inescapable fact of life as you think. Somewhere in it all is a silent resignation of what you once believed to be the zenith of your experience. You recognize it and call it a realization. But who's to say that the extreme moments you live for aren't as important as the home that cares for you? It's the same existential conundrum that many reach but are too late to act in their midlife crisis at 50. Too old for anything extreme, approaching retirement, all the while your main job never as important as it was- as the home you support is now self sufficient. You're left with the same question you believed to have answered but only distracted with these "responsibilities". Distraction is the enemy of vision. Just make sure you know you might be searching for the glasses you're looking through this whole time.

Thats the thing with avalanche danger, everything can go well for years and you think, you can kinda estimate the risks pretty good. Then you have a season where you suddenly trigger multiple avalanches and it makes you doubt. You actually never know how close you were in previous season to trigger an avalanche, you thought you were in control all those years but you cant know for sure how few was missing for that avalanche to trigger. Maybe you actually were in control and you just had an unlucky season now, thats the thing you cant know, and suddenly from a pretty confident spot these experiences are making you doubt yourself. As older you get, you experience more of these situations and only then you really realize to what danger you expose yourself. It for sure changes you, but better to turn back once too much than once too little. I really enjoyed watching this, its the perfect mix of skiing, story and jokes. Everything was so good, really good work! But how are these Pov shots real? They look crazy fast

As someone who has lost a loved one in an avalanche, it kind of breaks my heart to see you guys taking such a light hearted approach with the avalanche risk. I mean I'm glad you put it out there and it is your decision what kind of risk you want to take. But in some situations you get the feeling that you guys are not completely aware of the actual risk. I think it's the situation you put yourself into, the boat renting, the film making and the people that create an environment of pressure. It takes so long to approach these faces and you don't get many opportunities to ski them and that lets you brush away your doubts and handle the situation way differently than you would under different circumstances. I am sure you know from your experience that there are kinds of avalanche which you can't 'outrun'. And the one you showed was a typical slab avalanche and it was just luck that you evaded it... If you wait for the right conditions you can do these faces at some point in your life. Maybe not all in the same trip, but if you take your time you will live longer and can also enjoy other things in the meantime.
@Nikolai_Schirmer
@Nikolai_Schirmer 2 года назад
Thanks for the words Christof. I’m lucky to never have lost someone close to me in an avalanche, I’m sorry to hear you have. Just to give you a bit more context, what this movie doesn’s show is the two months leading up to this trip where we don’t ski avalanche terrain because of a persistent weak layer. Also note the different course of action in the last couloir and the face that slid. Where an avalanche in the couloir pretty would almost certainly mean death, the face that slid not only had high points to pull out on, but also a fairly clean outrun without any terrain traps. I have skied lots of faces like that in my life, and I’m well aware of how few and far in between the good days are. This time we made the wrong call. The plan is not to do that again. I’m speaking to an avalanche psychologist on a livestream tonight at 20.00 CET if you’d like to chime in there. The link is in the stories on my instagram

@@Nikolai_Schirmer Don't get me wrong this is a fantastic movie, the skiing is amazing, snow is dream like, scenery just breath taking and I probably would've done the same a few years ago. But this is also a perfect case study in group dynamics: the risk analysis, the decision making, the biases we have and lies we tell ourselves to justify our actions. You guys knew, at least to some extent, that you were taking a big risk at multiple occasions in this movie but still did it anyway. In the end I think for a passionate skier, taking the right actions for risk mitigation just hurts too much because it means less skiing in epic conditions. We should try to find a way around this. it doesn't mean we can't have fun, there is plenty of less exposed lower angle terrain to play around in until safe conditions are there :) Stay safe

I have no idea how you can become such good skiers and be so haphazard in the mountain, rushing, not waiting for your friend on her climb and for her to do her evaluations, "doing snow stability tests" (with your hands), riding the day after a storm, rapid warming it was honestly like watching a text book story from my avalanche training book about how people get stuck in avalanches and die. Last year, at 55, i climbed and snowboarded down one of the steepest escarpments in the US, near Palm springs CA. I was not in trained shape, I made 2 prior attempts and had to gather gear and retrain skills each time. It took me one whole day from early morning to well after dark, and the ride was the shortest. The best feeling was climbing up the face and being at the top, seeing the Pacific ocean on one side and the desert more than 2 miles below. I was hurting for a few days after. I don't know if that's the last time I'll ever do it. Ive been looking up at that way for years, dreaming of doing it. It didn't change my life. It used to be something to tell others, but people my age either don't believe me or likely dont care. Something happens when you age, and I don't think it's physical. The mundaneness of even making money and having things can be so deadening. I guess in order to feel alive and away from the nonsense, I just had to climb and do something that, if I perished, would at least be something grand.

I really appreciate the stylistic choice to not foreshadow the slide with ominous music. Because the avys that kill don't come with obvious warnings.

The way it ended with the final run of the day and making a call on something that's a finger tip away - risk, consequence, and the people we love. What a great story.

Haven't seen anything like this, can't believe this is RU-vid, it's simply too good. First of respect to Captain Crocs, I've always hated crocs and people who wear them in some way, but that guy is a legend, in that climate every day… oh my! The editing and footage is amazing, huge high five to camera guy for making me live this epic adventure. Lastly, mad respect to the riders, the actions chosen during the trip, the commenting and the skiing was astounding. Thank you!
