87 years before Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain to the “New World,” a Muslim dude from China set sail for a new world. Columbus had 3 ships. This dude had 317, and some of his ships were twice as big as Columbus’ ships. Columbus had a crew of 87. This dude had 30,000. Columbus traveled 4,000 miles (6400 km). This dude traveled 7,000 (11,000 km). And this dude didn’t steal resources from foreign lands or take over these foreign lands like Columbus did. Instead, he gave pretty gifts and brought folks home to introduce them to his family. His name was Zheng He, and here is the story of his voyages.
At the beginning of the 1400s, China was the top dog in the world. This was when it was known as the Great Ming Empire, named after the ruling Ming dynasty. The third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Di aka the Yongle Emperor, wanted the world to know how strong China was. He had an aggressive foreign policy, leading military campaigns against the Mongolian tribes to the north and west. Di also brought back the traditional tribute system, which said countries on China’s borders all had to recognize China as their boss and basically kiss his feet. These countries would give gifts to China, and in return China offered its protection and access to goods.
Di sent his favorite generals to meet with the Manchurian people to the north, the Koreans and Japanese to the east, and Vietnamese to the south. To the southwest and west, however, he had a different idea in mind. He decided to send out a gigantic naval expedition, and he chose his buddy Zheng He to lead it. Di and He went way back, since they were kids. After He’s father died resisting the Great Ming Empire, He was captured and promptly castrated and forced to be a servant. But as a servant is when he became friends with Di. Eventually, He became one of Di’s most trusted generals. So hey, it DOES pay to have friends in high places.
In 1405, China had the best naval technology and the largest ships in the world. They had the best ships, man. It was during this time that Di sent Zheng He off on his first expedition. Their mission was not only to go forth and show everyone how awesome they were and collect tribute, but also to explore new lands, ideas and products. Zheng He commanded 317 of the world’s most advanced ships and around 28,000 men. On board, sailors, builders and maintenance workers, soldiers, diplomats, doctors, and even astronomers and religious leaders. Oh, also on board, the finest Chinese goods, as well as a bunch of gold and silver. Yep, they were all about that bling. The expedition went to modern day central Vietnam, Thailand, the island of Java, along the Straits of Malacca, and ended up on the southwest coast of India in Calicut. And yes, everywhere they went, the people they visited were very impressed. Some of the people joined He to return to China with the expedition. On their return to China in 1407, Zheng He even found the time to stop an attempted pirate uprising in Sumatra, bringing the pirate who led the whole thing back to Nanjing for punishment.
But the same year He got back, he sent a second expedition, directing 68 ships back to Calicut to go to a big party celebrating the inauguration of a new king.
In October 1409, He began his third expedition, this time joining them in person. Oh, and with 30,000 troops. You’ll find out why shortly. He went to a lot of the same places he went the first time, but also to Sumatra. On his way back, he also got into a bit of a tussle with King Alagonakkara of Ceylon, which is today known as Sri Lanka. Well, despite being outnumbered, He defeated Alagonakkara’s soldiers and even captured HIM, taking HIM back to Nanjing as prisoner.

Columbus as a cruel Conqueror who brings war, disease, tear and blood VS Zheng He as a Peaceful Dude bringing gold, beatiful gifts and respect to the natives. Columbus brought the European poor to colonize the New World and seized the LAND AND GOLD of the locals; Zheng He brought Chinese middle-class businessmen to trade with the locals and welcome local people back to China for free. If you are the native people, would you like to welcome a Conqueror or a Dude?

When Zheng He graced our shores in his diplomatic voyage to Somalia. We gave him the iconic giraffe that became synonymous with his East African mission, as a token of hospitality and friendship. As a result, Mogadishu sent three ambassadorial envoys to China between 1416 and 1423. Thus, the first ever African nation to have diplomatic relations with China.

Zheng He (Zheng Tze, or Cheng Ho, as I taught) was basically a prolific diplomat *bad ass* ; leaving not just cultural traces, but so far as influencing the religious-cultural identity in some of countries he visited. You could say he's one of the most (if not _the_ most) beloved Chinese in Indonesia. And oh, his ships were not just 'twice' bigger, but even *five times* bigger than Colombus' ship.

HELL YES. No one ever talks about this cat in the annals of exploration, yet I vividly remember first learning of Zheng He when I was 12 and almost feeling as if this was some part of history which had been kept from me on purpose. I mean, the scale, the comprehensiveness! The West wouldn't set out on an expedition dedicated to multiple dimensions of knowledge (beyond exploitative trade) like this itself until Napoleon's invasion of Egypt with its arms *and* minds. Actually Zheng He's mission is more like a diplomatic expedition and, and, and, A SEARCH OF THE MISSING EMPEROR HUI, for the reason we all know (well Mr. Di the Brutal rebel and steal the empire from his nephew and kill a hell lot of his loyalist and punished the people in Jiang Nan, and his nephew is apparently MISSING) Also be noted that Zheng He is quite unique when it comes to his religious belief, he was, by his action, a Buddhist, a Muslim, and Taoist, we can't judge his real belief directly because his man are also multi-believers, which was typical for Chinese people at that time, and it is possible that he had to please his man by attending their rituals before set sail. Another interesting fact, the cost for the voyage came from the coffer of Yuan dynasty, because the Mongols don't have to pay the huge expense for maintaining national defense, especially the Great Wall, and because of this, they could reduce the tax in certain region(Jiang Nan to be specific, and you now know why these people hate Mr. Di the Brutal and his lovely father, because they both impose a huge tax)
@Dragons_Armory
@Dragons_Armory 5 лет назад
It's interesting to point out that Zhu Di was a rather liberal emperor because he was seen as an usurper at home. His attempts at engaging diplomatic missions with newly nations and many new undiscovered western polities~ thus in extension in being the face of China was because he wanted to overcompensate his domestic image and prove that he was a generous man and also one who is very confident by the tacit demonstration of his mighty fleet. A lot of conservative Mandarins at home resented him because of his aforementioned image as an usurper. That is why Zhu Di implicitly relied on the eunuchs and his imperial agents in all manners of governance. A ruthless man at home, but nonetheless an ambitious and capable emperor. Because he was so eager to compensate for his bad start, that's why he vigorously pursued war in the steppes, shored up the Ming economy, and also commissioned many cultural projects including the massive Yongle Encyclopedia. Interesting that after diplomatic mania ended (and with Zhu Di's death) the Ming reverted to building walls.

People's belief in Zheng He's 7 sea voyages includes the following 6 possibilities: 1. It was possible to build 317ships (most of them 4 stories tall, 127meter long and 52 meter wide) within 3 years. 2. It was possible for those huge sailships to sail upward against the Yangtze River from the sea to Nanjing. 3. It was possible for the Chinese people who saw those huge ships not to write any literature about their seeing experience. 4. It was possible for foreigners of so many countries NOT to write any literature reporting their extraordinary experience. It was also possible for Zheng He and his men NOT to write down any foreigners' compliments on the Chinese ships. 5. It was possible for Zheng He to finish the deeds he did in every country in a day or two. 6. It was possible for those 317 ships to have disappeared suddenly after Zheng He returned to Nanjing from his 7th voyage.

Given how underwhelming or generally depressing his alternative outcomes are (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), it probably would result in the Ming Dynasty imploding way earlier due to the financial strain, China entering a bloody mix of Warring States Period and Nomadic Invasions: Jurchen Boogaloo, and he wouldn't be able to tell what could happen past that since the video(s) would become too lengthy, with the token comment about the World Wars and US/USSR intervention that must be made at every opportunity.

@legpol
@legpol 2 года назад
Dr. Woozie: The mosque dedicated to Zheng He in Indonesia might be built by Chinese immigrants. Believers in Zheng He's voyages have built many memorials all over the world. Unfortunately all the memorials cannot mean the existence of Zheng He's voyages. I said so because of many impossible things. For instance, his 317 ships were too many to be built within 3 years of time. There are many more. We shall skip them and go to the last impossible. After his 7th voyage, we were told that his ships were cremated in the vicinity of Nanjing. Yet any cremation could not have burnt the portion of the ship which was below the river level. As a consequence, 317 ship bottoms would have sunk to the bottom of the river and be preserved there. Today we would be able to find them with modern instruments. My friends, do you believe there would be anything to be found?

I know a lot of historians tend to discount Columbus’ achievement, but his voyages were much more impressive than Zheng He’s. The later’s was essential a PR stunt by the Ming, which didn’t lead to to advancements in trade routs, lasting communications, or geographical knowledge. Nothing was accomplished by Zheng of real consequence (on a world-wide and long lasting scale). Also, Columbus tends to get a bad reputation for rediscovering the new world. Sure, he did some bad things like introducing natives to European disease that spread across the new world. However, there isn’t a feasible scenario where contact between the new and old world didn’t result in this outcome. Any sustained contact, whether from Zheng or Columbus, would have led to the spread of diseases that would wipe many Native Americans out. It wasn’t the fault of Columbus, but rather the fault of increasing means of transportation and population sizes that led to the decline of native populations.
@iammrbeat

Trade routes, geographical knowledge, I can agree to that. But *no* lasting influence? I beg to differ. Mr. Beat only explained about his diplomatic expedition as Chinese ambassador, and him beating pirates in Sumatra, but he forgot that Zheng He was a Muslim, and in his voyages he also brought other Chinese muslims along with Chinese kong hu chu. As a side note in their voyages to Indonesia, they also introduced Islam to the area. Take a note that in those era, the Hindu-Buddha influence in Java and Sumatra had started to decrease. Zheng He's religious introduction, albeit limited in coastal area, helped to boost the vast spread of Islam in Indonesia several decades later, also by Chinese from Wali Songo (Nine Leaders) group. If Cheng Ho didn't go to Malacca and Java, we'll never see the unique diversity in that area.

Why does every one forget that China was an empire? If it had tried to expand it would be in danger of ripping it's self apart.

Mr. Beat, you didn't mention the event that caused the Ming Dynasty to stop exploration. It was the destruction by fire of the Forbidden City which was seen as a bad omen.

I really enjoyed this video! The only comment is time code: 4:05. When I first saw the brown and blue map my brain associates blue with water, but it's switched in this. Blue is land. If you update this, would make brown land mass. Blue ocean. Example, see time code 8:08.

cb7324: You must be from a Southeastern country. If so, do you have eyewitness reports about seeing Zheng Heh's ships telling us how excited were they? Do you have reports written by your ancestors about how Zheng Heh communicated to your king when Zheng He first arrived at the sea shore? You see, your king must not be living by the sea shore and he must be living hundreds of miles away from the sea. For them to meet, Zheng Heh must first announce his arrival to your king. Do you have such announcements written by Zheng Heh? Another important thing is, when your king met Zheng Heh, did your king kowtow Zheng Heh? Why I asked this question was because in the Chinese book 星槎勝覽, it was reported that the Vietnamese king kowtowed and prostrated Zheng Heh. So I am afraid it might mean all the other kings had kowtowed and prostrated Zheng Heh.

If China had done what the Spanish and Portuguese did, people would have probably been forced to speak Chinese in all the countries Zheng He had visited.
@rabbitazteca23
@rabbitazteca23 Год назад
Instead we are forced to speak English and Spanish. Same same. Oh and Portuguese. But that's neither here nor there. Also I don't think Chinese is a language... more like an umbrella that has many languages. But they could be speaking mandarin today. Also, interestingly, Zheng Hi spoke arabic!

This is actually a great example showing the cultural differences between Chinese and Europeans. The Chinese name of China means "central kingdom", which was based on the traditional view that China is the center of the civilized world surrounded by barbarians. They thought they had the best in the world for a long time in history. This also explains why China hasn't had any wars with another country for over 40 years.
