As a Canadian we love the VZ-58. They were super popular here since the AK is banned but the VZ wasn't... until Commander Sparkle Socks deemed them too scary in 2020. I had one but it fell off my boat in 2020.

I have one, because I was born in Czechoslovakia. Short note - to fire full auto bayonet should be attached for better control of gun. It was in army manual.

As a conscript to the Czechoslovakian army in 1966 when I was handed the VZ58 Sargant said ‘solder you will remember the serial number of your gun for the rest of your life’ and he was right, I am using it as a PIN number for my credit card.

We are from Slovakia and this rifle is reasonably priced and spare parts and aftermarket is always available to us unlike the AK. We agree on the safety lever it's so confusing and if you got good at it, your AK will give you hard time to get comfortable with. Great video. Thanks

I like that Brandon has the objectively worse wood furniture on the VZ because with the beaver barf stock set it's 1000% cooler than the ak in a 60s art Deco cold war style way

It's not surprising that the Czechs went with their own design. They have a long history of making some of the finest firearms in Europe. I would assume that presented with anything foreign, someone there would say, "We can do better."

In my country, this rifle is very popular,when you have one,you are considered as a real Czech man. I have the one with foldable stock, wich we call "kosa" in Czech, that means "scythe" in English..For Czechs, this rifle is really special symbol of our pride. Love my vz 58, one day i will give it to my son.

I am Czech and a profesional soldier, too. So I spend many years with vz. 58. It is nice assault rifle. Very reliable even in difficult enviroment (rain, dirt, mud) and easy to maintain. Several years when I was member of reconaisance batalion I had vz. 61. It is a Czechoslovakian small submachine gun 7,65 mm browning. I liked it, too.

Idk there’s just something about the VZ-58 that I really like. It just has that magic to it.

Im from Slovakia and we use it in army (in 99). If the VZ 58 is in good condition, you can hit an orange in 200 m distance

I'm Czech. Army service 2000-2001 (more than a decade after SSSR falled apart), one of the last turnuses, only proffesional army since 2004. Had a chance to test both AK and VZ. Won several "weekend out of base" in shooting competitions there. And had to do dissasemble and back of the gun too many times to count 😀 . Honestly - VZ is better than AK. Why? 1. easier to clean. 2. more accurate in burst mode. 3. lighter, 4. more deadly in auto if you can control medium bursts. I was able to hit 3/3 on 200m figurine in burst with VZ, not with AK. And single-shot, for unknown reason, I was hitting 7/10 on 400m "machine-gun-post-target" with VZ, while AK only 3/10 average. In a practical low2medium range combat where AR comes in, the VZ will do better for running around with, medium-range snappin with burst, and if you can control longer bursts in auto, it's much more devastating. Btw. did you know that 7,62x39 is capable of shooting through side of BMP-1 between the wheels? That's where the faster fire rate comes in. Laying hidden aside the road and being able to just spray those 30 bullets at (and through) an otherwise formidable target in such short moment and get away ....

It's always impressed me how much the Czechs did with a milled vs stamped receiver. Milling thin walls without chatter is not a trivial matter, and the fact they made it lighter than an AKM is impressive.

To be fair I think the accuracy centered design was because of the Vz.52 which was in 7.62x45mm (don’t know the ballistics on that) and that design was carried over into a more assault rifle, well, rifle when the soviets didn’t like the Vz.52 I really like how mine feels yet i haven’t shot it yet… need some help getting that barrel in lol

I'm in the army as a reservist and we still use the SA 58. I've fired thousands of rounds out of it. It is a very popular weapon among the team. It still works, minimal glitches. It is light (this is a big advantage, you can run with it and hold it in high positions) and simple. Working with a fuse is not a problem if you get used to it. In the military, no one gets a lot of cuddles, and this gun holds up. You can throw it on the ground for several generations and it will still shoot accurately and flawlessly.

You keep wanting to hate it, but deep in what's left of your heart, you know it's the better rifle.

One note: The vz.58 isn't striker fired, it's hammer fired. The firing pin is a separate component from the *linear hammer* (instead of a swinging hammer like most firearms).

Czech engineering is criminally under appreciated Its tanks at the start of the second world war were some if the best in The world at the time and the germans actually kept them in production for the wermacht Its no surprise that they build a solid rifle too

It has become the weapon of choice for many PMC's and was (and still is) heavily used in Afghanistan and other such places. A few simple after market mods fix all of the complaints for AK lovers and they quickly convert. Change the selector switch and mag release to ambidextrous, add a flash suppressor, and change the pistol grip (the original is a little small) and fore stock. The gun is noticeably lighter, much easier to field strip and clean, being able to use stripper clips is great, being shorter makes it great in vehicles and close combat (even better if you have the following stock), the faster rate of fire allows you punch holes in harden targets, brick and stone walls, and light armored vehicles. In single shot it is far more accurate than the AK and can hit farther targets than the AK. In full auto its a climber so if you aim a little lower a mag dump will travel in a 3 inch wide strip for about a foot straight up, whereas with the AK you'll have a one foot circle. As for the bayonet, come on, the bayonet is a last resort item, if you have to use your bayonet it means that you are in a hand to hand situation and that comes down to who is the better trained soldier and luck, but don't worry the Vz-58 Bayonet will not let you down. If you want to see another (still in use) Czech rifle look at the Vz 52/57 it will make the SKS lovers have wet dreams

Just 2 points, after living with Vz.58 for a year: 1) the weight difference in favor of Vz.58 is more than 0,5 kg (2,9 kg of Vz.58 vs. 3,5 kg of AK) - you WILL appreciate the weight difference quickly, if you carry the gun whole day 😉 2) using the selector is both intuitive & super-easy with first phalanx of the right index finger - and all that without releasing grip or de-focusing from target. Still consider it a nice feature, definitely not bug.

Czechoslovak leadership: "How can we say 'fuck you' to the Soviets without actually saying it?" Czechoslovak arms designers: "We could build a rifle that *looks* like an AK, shoots the *same* bullet, but is completely different in every other way possible." Czechoslovak leadership: "Do it."

I've always looked at the Vz. 58 as having more in common with an SKS than an AK - short stroke, the hinged mechanism is similar to the SKS's tilting bolt, open top-cover, accepts stripper clips. It falls more in the category of the Chinese Type 56 and Type 63 - "not quite AKs, but close enough".

VZ-58 is really good weapon, especially modern versions. Maybe it´s a reason why Stonebrige and Scott use it in Strikeback series. 😀

Well, from what I know, my grandfather told me that the reason we made Vz. 58 different from the AK was to keep some independence from Soviets back in the day. It was somewhat popular as it even saw service in the Vietnam war, Cuban conflicts and in Afghanistan too. I really do enjoy AK rifles but Vz. 58 is something that I need in my collection as it is piece of our history. Fun fact but I think that some of the guys here will know. Vz. 58 is still in Czech military service even after Czech army adopted the CZ 805 Bren.

You have to keep in mind when asking why this gun was designed that it was a symbol of national pride and resistance in the face of Soviet dominance. Czechoslovakia was far more resistant to Soviet political, military, and economic control than any other nation in the Warsaw Pact, so it would make sense that their army would be of a similar mindset. Combine this defiance with the storied tradition of Czech arms design in the interwar period (VZ 26, ZH 29, and the plethora of Mauser derivatives) you understand how this nationalistic thought characterized Czechoslovakia in the early Cold War. This gun is more than just a gun, it’s a political statement meant to tell the Russians that, despite their political control, they cannot fully subjugate the Czech nation and people.

I have never fired an AK, but I have fired this, and it felt incredible the first time I did. I was like 14 or 15 when I first tried it - I honestly thought it would be more difficult to control.

of course vz.58 is much better than AK. I'm slovakian, born in czechoslovakia, own vz.58 but fired AK many times and can just tell you that quality, accuracy, overall craftmanship - these are simply uncomparable.. we in czechoslovakia know how to produce quality arms, while russians don't..very simple.. :)

I think it is worth mentioning that Brandon was more accurate with this VZ than most of his AKs... lotta awesome PLINK sounds.

It has a short stroke gas piston It can load from stripper clip It still has removable magazines It takes 7.62x39mm The only problem is it doesn't take AK magazines. Otherwise perfect rifle.

Just shot a vz 58 today and honestly it was amazing to shoot. Smooth trigger pull, barely any kick (especially compared to a ak) and overall it kicked ass

The VZ58 was also used in Full Metal Jack as the weapon of choice by various VC fighters including the sniper at the end of the film. I don’t think it was meant to be in place of the AK since it was one of the weapons given to North Vietnam during the war. Either way, it works

During the Cold War, Czechoslovakia was to Warsaw Pact what France was to NATO. They had their own small arms, which were well made and they weren’t changing how they did business, even for a super power. Also, current small arms individual weapons manipulation was not something they considered We train to fight from a standing position much more than 1950s-60s soldiers from any army. They fought overwhelmingly from the prone and made short rushes. Many times covering ground behind AFVs. The VZ58 is pretty ergonomic, even for right handed shooters, when you’re handling it in the prone (look at the “flat” lead edge of the mag, for example: monopod anyone). Also, it’s no coincidence there’s absolutely no interchangeability with the AK: even the compensator. They didn’t want it. Soviets dictated caliber, but allowed them to design their own rifles They were so independent minded and not compliant with the Soviets, in fact, that the Soviets had to invade Czechoslovakia in 1968 and crack down because there was way too much independent thought going on. Great rifle. I like both the AK and the VZ. But they are nothing alike VZ is actually closer to WWII german stuff, not the MP44, the other semi auto, which I forget the name of at the moment. I had the chance to fire one of these when I was a British soldier on peacekeeping in Bosnia. We were with the Czech army on deployments we had a range day with them where I fired this weapon and the Czechs had a go on our SA80's. I found it was not bad to fire but when firing automatic, it tries to climb and the Czechs were surprised at how heavy our SA80 was, but found it pleasant to fire on automatic.

That recoil controllability might have had some level of legitimacy to it if the AK didn't have a JMAC Customs 4 chamber brake threaded to it.

did some training back in 2002 with czech sf teams while serving. they were using the vz58, they were modernised versions with shorter barrel, suppressors, folding stocks and optics. didnt get much time with one (trading my l85 for 5 mins) but didnt seem that bad

as we were taught during training - weapon safety facing forward - towards the enemy (shooting burst), safety facing backwards - towards yourself - 1 round - for yourself ...

I think it’s very important to remember that the Czechs really hated being a part of the Soviet Union against their will. Many of them saw it as no different to being occupied by the Nazis. So there was always this sort of subliminal resistance to the soviets going on, and it’s very evident in their arms manufacturing. So the Vz. 58 wasn’t made because they thought the AK was bad and they thought theirs was better, it was really a “go fuck yourself” to the soviets. The same thing applies to the original vz. 52 rifle and pistol. And the CZ 82 later.

As a card-carrying left-handed person, the VZ-58 is a rare example of a vintage firearm perfectly designed for us southpaws. This endears it to me in a way the AK or really any other vintage firearm can’t match.

I bought mine because the price was un beatable. It's not the VZ58 but the VZ2008. Only semi auto is the difference. I paid less than $500 for it and it still remains one of my top 3 guns I own. I did put some upgrades in the stock and grip that makes it even better.

Biggest gripe about the VZ is the lack of good ways to mount an optic and other accessories. That being said, the paratrooper stock and beaver-barf handguard is a whole vibe. My brother has one and it shoots surprisingly soft for how light it is.

When judging the gun, don't forget: Guns were also a political topic. Czecho-Slovakia had before WWII a very well developed weapons industry, and produced also for Germany in WWII guns. They wanted to "isolate" themselves a bit in the warsaw pact - and don't forget: 1958 was the Emerge of the VZ-58, just 10 Years later, in 1968, the russians "liberated" Czechoslovakia from its own political path in Prague.

I’ve got one, and as a “wrong handed” shooter, the safety works well for me. Doesn’t seem any more practically accurate than a good ak but it’s a cool rifle.

Hey nice video! I only disagree with the shooting distance, as a former shooting range commander we had effectively hit targets on 400m without any problem and the bullets were even destroing high voltage isolators in the range of 1,5 km.

The reason why VZ 58 was developed was as much about army requirement as about national identity, since Czechoslovakia had big gun manufacturing tradition Originaly, Czech even wanted different caliber

Simple gun and it works always in any weather. Had them in the army in 90 tees. Its not perfect but it does the job. Easy to clean and disassemble and reassemble.

As an owner of one i can tell you that there is a way to operate the switch with the palm and trigger finger without letting go of the pistol grip. It is also nice to se any vz.58 go full auto, mine has been butchered to semi only by the law of Czech Republic and European Union.

Obviously - I’m a czech and I love this rifle, since I own one, but: - the selector is actually quite easy to operate while being righthanded -the muzzle thread is just ok - every single gunsmith around here makes a suppressor or a muzzle break for the VZ.58 -the gun itself is lighter and thinner than any AK platform -I love it -optic mounting is really eazy given the shape of reciever -oh, we have captive pins, yay!

VZ - 58. My weapon in military service in 1982 in Czechoslovakia. Mine was with a folding stock.

I'm still blown away that no production AK variants have ended up with BHO. Especially as more American companies are making them, it seems like somebody would have figured out a way to make it work with standard mags or at least have one that catches on AK mags designed for it. It's not the end of the world for target shooting, but I could see that in battle you either count your rounds or just hope your chamber isn't empty.

As a Czech, I personaly love this firearm. It´s such a nice piece of history. Also very good video Brandon, hope to see some more Czech guns in a future.

For me as a Czech Republic citizen was the Vz 58 my first rifle and it was almost impossible to buy anything else within 500$ budget. The Vz 58 has something more to it in Czech Republic. Like tradition. It is more than just AK vs Vz58, it is part of the culture and most of gun licence holders who can buy rifles buy the Vz 58. It’s like AR-15 to Americans. I personaly like it, but don’t love it. I like my AR or the Steyr AUG better, but this is very individual. The 7.62x39 is not the best cartridge, that could be the reason. At 300m is easier to hit with .223 than the 7.62x39 so i prefer the .223 over 7.62. Also the price comes to mind, when brass 7.62 cost about 0.75$ and brass .223 cost about 0.50$ per round. With steel cased ammo we currently go little less than 0.50$ for 7.62 so it makes no more sence to fire steel cased chinese ammo from 1952 (not kidding - most of it is really that old). But when the 7.62 costed about 0.15$… good old times… 👍🏻 it is time to move forward and use NATO ammo for less than the old soviet surplus one for higher price. Still have couple thousands of 7.62 rounds, so we can shoot as much we want. Great video, thank you! Greetings from Czech Republic! I own a few AK’s and a VZ. 58 and the fit in finish on the VZ is so much better. The intricate lightening cuts on the receiver are pretty wild that they were doing that in the early 60’s.

I Fired one of these while on vacation in Czechia. The model I used seemed to be a bit old and very used, so it had a jamming issue, other then that I was surprised at how much more comfortable it was to shoot than the AKM variant I shot at the same place. The lightness of the rifle and the sight allowed me at least to shoot more accurately than the AKM. So I liked it, but I have to technical inclination on it, only light operational.

As a Czech, who has fired and walked around with this rifle a lot... I can tell you... that its perfect. Fire selector is something to get used to but its actually really easy to go to semi from safe when you learn just a little bit. All in all... thank you, for sharing a little bit of my countries firearm history. Love ya, no homo.

I have had several of them. They were always incredibly reliable. I had the economy version of the stock - no luxury wood just chipboard and glue (I jest). I built one into a fake 'Gattling type' gun on a tv series to be blown up on a train,. After the explosion everything was ruined except the metal. A quick hose down with hot water and the gun fired perfectly. The falling locking block system is great - Carl Walther was a clever man and the Czechs were bright enough to use his idea. They have been making excellent weapons for years. The famous BREN gun even has its name taken from the two factories Brno and Enfield (UK). Love from the 51st State. xxx

Bolt and piston is like an SKS. I really love to shoot my VZ-58. It's one of my favorites. Mine has beaver barf furniture and the side folding stock. It's one of my top 3 for what I have.

It's also an amazing as an intermediate cartridge rifle in Cali, since you can have the fixed mag and only ever reload it from the striper clips, thus allowing you to have a proper pistol grip

What I find the most fascinating thing about AKs and their derivatives and variants is just how varied and different a lot of them are from the original AK-47. They each have a slight or heavy personality to them, much like NATO’s rifle pattern of choice, the AR-15/18.

It’s interesting that the Czechs did their own thing when it came to 7.62x25 with Tokarev vs. CZ52, 9mm Makarov with the Makarov vs. CZ82, and the AKM vs. VZ58. Shows how much former Czechoslovakia were proud of their established arms manufacturers and made weapons housed in Warsaw Pact calibers.

Not gonna lie, the VZ.58 is one of my favorites. A couple things i like that you didnt mention: I like the magazines and they seem to be easier for newer shooters to put in correctly than the AKMs. The lightweight but still milled receiver is a big plus to me, less mass hurts rapid fire control but makes it more pleasant to carry. The muzzle threading is weird but there are a couple good brakes that are i believe of slovakian style that definitely help with the muzzle jump. That being said there is almost no support for 14x1.0RH and so you are either stuck with VZ.58 specific devices or an ugly adapter. I had to get a keymo muzzle device custom made for suppressing mine. Comparing it to a KNS tuned AK, the AK is both heavier and if tuned right loses almost all jolt from bolt carrier group hitting end of travel. I'm sure you could make the VZ58 shoot a lot softer if you started with a virgin barrel and slowly increased gas port size, but they are in the same camp of "designed a little overgassed" as the normal AKMs, M4s, etc. Oh that's right, in my experience they suppress quite well, dont seem to be overly effected by the increased backpressure but will not cycle subsonic 7.62x39. Also reloading from stripper clips is a lot of fun, so thats a plus. That bayonet lug also doubles as a bipod attachment point for the simple yet effective bipod they issued with the "night vision equipped" models that also had a side rail for one of those giant NV scopes. I own two VZ.58s and six AK variants AKM/RPK/74 and shoot them all :)

Dont forget about reliability and sturdiness. Milled steel contra ak sheet metal 😁. Vz is a Great carbine for hidden carrying with foldstock and underbarrel grip, suited for close quarter fighting. But to be honest a have only a semi auto version and i am proud we revolted against CCCP at least in this way

The VZ58 was popular here in Northern Ireland, used by "Loyalist" / "Unionist" / "Protestant Paramilitaries. They imported 300 of them in 1988. This Assault Rifle is iconic in "Ulster". There are many videos or photos on Google showing Loyalist gunmen, firing them.

Canadian here with correction. At 13:41 he said you can't do a speed reload. You can do a speed reload, if you use a beer-can-grip to hold your magazine and keep your thumb out, away from the magazine in your hand. Your thumb activates the magazine release and knocks out the empty mag in a single motion. This doesn't allow for magazine retention, but gets the mag-well free for the reload being held in the beer-can-grip. You're welcome.

While I have handled one I have never had the chance to shoot one. Ironically the thing you hate the most, the selector lever location, was what caught drew my attention to the VZ-58 in the first place. Being a left handed shooter I figured it might be just right for me. Alas I didn't have the funds to make the VZ-58 I examined my own so I can't say if the selector lever location would have worked out for me or not.

I wanna see this thing in more video games! It's one of my favourite weapons and is severely underrepresented. Plus 800rpm of 7.62x39 sounds crazy powerful in a video game. But as far as real life goes, both the AKM and VZ.58 have pros and cons and I honestly can't pick one. The last round hold open on the VZ is neat though.

I have shot and own a vz58. One of my favorite rifles. The history of Czechs making their own designs like the vz52 instead of the sks is really cool to me.

This was the "Canadian AK" until Dear Leader decided they were too scary. F to our rapidly diminishing firearms. Edit: to be clear, we had the semi-auto version. No fun allowed in Canada, just less fun allowed nowadays. RIP.

Hi from Czech republic! I spended a lot of time with this gun, when I was in army.. VZ. is shortcut of word vzor, means model in czech. 58 is year of invite. I had a model with folable butt and that "wood" parts was made from some kind of hard plastic.. 🙂

If you wanted to be fair in comparing the recoil between the two, you should have removed the highly efficient muzzle brake from the AK ;) The Czechoslovaks never really appreciated executing orders from Moscow, so when the Soviets only imposed the caliber 7.62x39 for their assault rifle, they chose to develop a rifle where everything was different from the AKM, except for the caliber, obey the orders, but not an inch more. That's why even the thread pitch is the other way around.

I remember being a small boy looking at a VZ thinking I was seeing an AK in all of it’s glory.

Im in Czech reserves and we still uses Vzs. And i cant complain, of course i hate i cant use fore grip or any reflex sights. But after all it's very necessery. Its very cool and reliable gun when it comes to dirt or field cleaning. Bur unfortunatly i cant compare it with the actual AK in this conditions but i belive its gonna be very similiar.

I always thought of the VZ-58 being kind of like a hybrid between the AK-47 and the SKS due the ability to load it through the top as well as having a large detachable magazine.

I as a left handed was wery satisfied with selector possition. I like that i was wearing les weight in duty. It was my personal weapon as squad commander in mechanized infantry

Well you did not make a lot of new Czech fans with this video I can tell you that. But seriously, it is an awesome gun. This gun really was something like middlefinger to USSR in that time, more that anything else. And actually was used in many conflicts and millitaries over the world, just patented, so nobody could copy it and make for themselves (not being better than AK was not the reason)

i really like that they can be reloaded with stripper clips, the unique grey paint and beaver barf furniture, with 800rpm if you're lucky enough to have full auto.

From the testing I've seen the vz-58 is actually significantly more accurate than any ak variation. Like 1moa vs 4moa. 9 hole reviews did a good test on this

There is a lot of modern accessories for the Vz.58. It's a sweet rifle and a fun way to show off gun knowledge to others. I'd love to own one but they are far more rare than 5 years ago. Personally, I like that wire folding stock and that bakelite stock over the wood or modern plastics. The Czech Army used the rifle for years after the USSR collapsed and I've heard their replacement for it doesn't compare to the reliability of the Vz.58
