I start a rainy walk from the former Great Central mainline station of Bulwell Common, before following the former Great Central & Great Northern Railway spur into Bestwood Colliery in Nottinghamshire.
I was lucky enough to be shown around the former colliery by a former coal miner.
Bestwood Colliery is a working museum these days with so many parts of the colliery preserved.

Loved this. How fantastic to meet this man and listen to his knowledge and his experience. My ex father-in-law worked with his pit pony from the age of 13 in the mines in Newcastle and told me many stories, as did my Mum and Nan who lived through the Blitz in London. It’s not until you get older do you really appreciate how precious it is/was to listen to these memories first-hand. Looking forward to the next one x

Oh man! One of my most favourite videos! Seriously. I loved seeing all that you filmed in that old building and listening to that gentleman talking with passion about the machinery, building and history of the mine; awesome! I love people like that who teach so much, but in a succinct yet clear way, with obvious pleasure. What an absolute pleasure for you to have experienced all that. Nice one!

Absolutely fantastic video and the fascinating insight of bestwood colliery and Nottingham involvement with titanic something I didn’t know the reference to king coal is also a reference to RJB minings Richard budge as king coal was his nickname when he bought pits from U.K. government

Also I think you missed a treat. Beyond the golf course at Bulwell are the remains of Bulwell Hall, a magnificent house that was owned and occupied by Thomas Hardy, a local brewery owner. It was used as an Italian pow camp in the war, and was eventually knocked down in the 1950s due to mining subsidence.

Are there any remains at all?

@@IckeWalks the stable block is still there. Look for pictures online and you’ll see what a magnificent house it was. The area around there was awash with now gone country houses- Nuthall Temple, Bulwell Hall, Hemphill Hall,Basford Hall. As well as still existing ones like Bestwood Lodge

The Nell Gwynn story is believed to be true. The illegitimate son of Charles and Nell became the first Duke of St Albans whose descendants retained Bestwood Park until the late 19th Century. They had Bestwood Lodge built on the site of the original hunting lodge. This is now a hotel.

Yeah. The Bulwell station house is actually on St Albans Road which I assume is connected.
