I was reading about the Mongolian steppes, the people who lived there domesticated horses and developed bridles, bits and saddles, this led to reading about dressage, which led me to your video! Learned quite a bit.

Trying to learn more about various riding skills.... all these walks look the same to me and I'm frustrated I can't tell the difference.

I have a funny problem where my horse has a fairly big walk but is almost in diagonal pairs in the walk? Do you have any suggestions to correct this/ resources for where I can look to correct this?

It is hard to correct a lateral walk once it has started but sometimes pushing the hind end out, like leg yield can help break up the incorrect timing of the walk.

@@AmeliaNewcombDressage yes is very difficult. It is easier to avoid it- by riding nose in front of vertical- ALWAYS. This horse is lateral al video- very sad- I don't hope anybody use it as a role model.

Regarding tracking, is this something that can be taught to a horse via groundwork?

That wasnt good walk. Not working though the back properly, that wasnt good overtrack, he is behind vertical, that wasnt collected walk and you talk rubbish about contact

Thank you! I have always wondered what these different walks look like, so I can create them. For instance I did not know that free walk and extended walk were different, I actually thought that some riders could not get their horses to stretch down all the way, so they were maintaining rein contact. Guess I better look at the tests. I sadly could not even do training level this year, because I could not get a good canter out of my horse. It was a gallop and very hard to get him round. One piece of the puzzle was found too late to show this year unfortunately, he didn’t like his saddle even though it appeared to fit, so now with a new saddle things are better. It is still too fast, but getting easier to get more round strides than hollow and I try to end it round before he does a belly flop and falls out of it. Anyway, point being I am just getting into this, so I am no judge of what you are doing and I have a funky horse to boot. Your videos really help and perhaps we will be able to do training level next year.

Why would you ever want a horse's head so low that you would mention dragging their nose in the dirt? I don’t understand how that's good for anyone, horse or rider 🤔

Great question. It's more of an hyperbole than anything else. I find that if most riders don't have that picture in their brain, they don't ask for enough stretch. Of course we don't actually want their nose on the ground, but the more they can stretch the better it is for their bodies :)

Behind the vertical the whole time... horrendous.

@natalie yeah the “horrendous” part was bitchy but the horse was definitely behind the vertical
