Ya-Te Kao Daryl had a brother named Merle. Merle gets his arm cut off. Rick gets his arm cut off in the comics. Merle goes bad for a while. Rick has shown that he can be bad sometimes.see where I'm going with this!? Merle tries to kill the governor a leader of a bad group and gets himself killed Rick is trying to kill Negan! Which means Rick dies in Season 8 confirmed.
Rick called Shane brother and Daryl called Merle brother. Rick lost Shane at the end of season 2 and Daryl lost Merle at the end of season 3. Now here, at the end of season 4, they realize they have become brothers to each other. It's simple, but its also effective.
This scene is not cheesy, it is real. Daryl is part of the reason the group has thrived, and Rick appreciates it. The post-zombie world accelerates everything fast, and Rick has become so close to Daryl that he now views him as a brother. Daryl was willing to take a beating or possibly death for his group.
Even after they had been split up for seemingly several weeks after the loss of the prison and after Daryl lost Beth, he still put what was left of the group he had just found before himself and anyone else. He had become close to Rick, cared about Carl, and Michonne had become a very valuable and respected member of the group, and they were the first ones from the group he’d run into since Beth was taken. He knew Joe was a dangerous man, but he was still more than willing to risk his life for HIS people and that made me admire him so much more than I already had prior to this season
+Rick Grimes RIck is way more of a brother to Daryl then Merle ever was. They've saved each other and plenty of other people in countless occasions. Too bad I believe he's going to die in the Finale.. Negan is coming....
Unless you had a brother who doesn't talk too much to you and doesn't appreciate anything you do but one who remotely keeps a watchful eye on you,look out for you,you would never understand the importance of Merle to Daryl.Sure Rick is like a brother to Daryl now,but Merle will always be his true brother.Brotherhood is not simply about sharing fantasy things and talking things out.Sometimes,there are many subtle hints that many people who never felt what it feels like having a brother that only one who had a brother grasps.So,don't comment on who is a better brother.
Yeah, Merle was a shithead for a long long while but he definitely loved his brother, can't deny that. He would turn on the governor, do whatever that had to be done to keep his brother safe. Even giving his life for him, and he did. I also think his sacrifice was meant for the other people back in the prison too, which he judged to be good people (sparing Michonne being one of the signs of that) even with all the conflicts he's gone through with them.
that and because of their last conversation they had while stuck in the well, they had opened up after a while ! i really really want that duo back together
Norman Reedus is such a great actor. Even a slight nod from him says so much. The pain and regret on his face here...and Rick knows just what he feels. They have such a great unspoken bond with each other. I choked up at "We're brothers". I'm sure Daryl would too if he said something back.
I was coming on to say something similar. When Rick looks at Daryl, pauses and says "You're my BROTHER", I nearly lost it. And honestly, the first time I saw this scene (a few weeks ago, I've seen them all now) there were a couple pauses where I thought Rick should say that exact thing. When he did....
Which is the better life? A comfortable, easy, air conditioned existence where you don't truly know who people are inside? Or a difficult, violent life that reveals the true character of yourself and those around you? I think the shows underlying idea is that the post apocalypse life is more real and earned than what came before.

Will Barron agree. Most people don't even know who they really are anyway. Which maybe is better than living through whatever makes you find out, but I am now glad I endured what I personally have. There is some satisfaction in knowing who you really are, and what you really think and mean. And what is really important. Most people don't.
It would be literally like flipping a coin of two outcomes. Some people are good, some are bad. And some people simply wouldn't like what they'd see if they realise who they truly were. Granted we'd be purer in our own perspectives of ourselves, but it doesnt mean we'd all be content with it.

Daryl is so tough, but when he loves someone.. he protects them with his life. He sacrificed his life for Carl, Michonne and Rick.. and I love him so much more for that.
Rewatching this clip after seeing the new episode. Family is definitely deeper than just blood. I love the fact that in this scene Rick calls Daryl his brother. I also love how motherly Michonne is Carl.
Til this day this is what makes me like this episode so much, how clearly these relationships are defined in it (Carl - son, Michonne - mother, Rick - father, Daryl - brother/uncle). The episode sums up what you said: "family is definitely deeper than just blood".
People think the ur my brother is cheesy and all that but I think it's sweet because Daryl lost merel and that really hurt him and when rick says this it's just so cute - bromance !!!!!!!!
I love it because it reassures Daryl that he does have a family that loves and cares for him. They have came a long way since season one when they hated each other!!
Cheyenne Hernandez It's amazing to see how far they've come, if Rick was still a police officer and Daryl was still influenced by Merle, Rick probably would have ended up arresting Daryl.
Rick is right, no one could have did what he did with Joe. Rick's brutality and also his humanity is what keeps him surviving. It's what keeps him beating the Shanes, governors, negans, and Joe's of the world. He can't be like hershel, where there's peace all the time because then the empire falls. He has to make peace and balance himself through his brutality and humanity
Yep, that’s the whole point of Ricks character in both the comics and show! Too bad Andrews agent wasn’t pleased with his 2nd (or 3rd tbh) contract… this show could have continued thriving.
@Kng-Flix Not a contract thing, Andrew wanted to spend more time with his family so he left after season 9. Funny thing is (if I recalled correctly from an interview), Andrew got back pretty much because his family pushed him back to be Rick Grimes.
Rick considers his whole group his family. Spoiler*, when Abe and Glenn die, he says that they are his family and that they need to take them to be buried.
Luca Rivers Rick had already established that the whole group is his family ever since they arrived at Alexandria. Even Rick quoted "I've killed people. I don't even know how many by now. But I know why they're all dead. They're dead so my family, all those people out there, can be alive. So I could be alive for them."
This episode shows that Carl’s death was more business than ACTUAL direction of the show. No way they had plans of killing him until the contracts broke down. This could make or break the show in my opinion.
Coming back to this scene. It means so much more now. It's truly something to have someone by your side through thick and thin. Much love, much respect for this scene.

To those people who think this is "cheesy" or "gay", you don't understand. I have this kind of relationship with someone....My best friend, my "Brother From Another Mother". When to men go through traumatic situations similar to this they bond on a whole new level. Preston Garvey nails it when he says "Blood Means Relations, Loyalty Means Family". Ill kill and die for my best friend, like he will kill and die for me.
While watching this wonderful series I keep asking myself the same question: "How would these characters turn out IF the Zombie Apocalypse never happened? What would they be doing now?" Such a terrible incident made some of these characters loveable, inspiring, and some very unlikable (like the Governor).
It's absolutely heartbreaking to rewatch this scene after hearing that Andrew is leaving TWD after his 6 episodes in season 9. I'll miss him forever. I'll miss these two together. They also made a mistake by killing off Carl in season 8. The Walking Dead without a Grimes will be meaningless.
Its been so long you could easily forget but, this is the first time Daryl and Rick had such wholesome connection. Daryl was always the odd one out, specially when Merle came into play. And after the Prison, them finding each other, and surviving, and Daryl looking for forgiveness, and Rick just telling him there is nothong to forgive. They are family.
I miss these episodes. The emotional yet humane episodes like the ones with Beth and Daryl. The episodes that show even when the world ends there can still be touching moments. (But also awesome action filled stuff.)
I wouldn’t mind if it was Rick, Daryl, and Judith. That way Rick can tell Judith all the stories and Daryl can be that friend that’s more like an uncle.
Blood thicker than water. This phrase is often misinterpreted , but really in means that going through some real hard times, e.g. war (which BTW indicates / involves blood) and stay together (loyal / true, ect.) no matter what - is a lot more important than just being family/friends, etc. in "normal" times.
I love how DARYL DIXON was written into the show cause the casting directors liked him so much. He didn't protray the other characters enough SO THEY MADE A WHOLE NEW CHARACTER 😩 They did so well with Daryl too! I love character development 🥹
I can relate to such a strong friendship becoming brothers I am 16 and I’ve known my best friend for half my life and he is someone I trust with my life
This is what i loved about this show. all of these completley different people who never would've gotten along before, coming together and becoming family
My Little brother Adam reminds me of Daryl. And our friendship is just like this. His older brother is in the military and I don't have siblings and so I need to take care of him while his brother is gone. I love him so much
