Hearing young leah saying she doesn't think the wall will ever come down because people still have the conflict in there heads is so true! And it's that reason alone why they will never come down anytime soon because young kids are being brain 🧠 washed in homes the length and bredth of the country I.e its just carrying on from generation to generation it will ultimately take more cross community relationships to break that cycle I had a wee smile on my face when she said she is going with a protestant her smile and reaction said it all when she said they met at the age of 8 years old! I hope they are still together to this day and go on to have a happy life together ❤️

It's been one year since I visited this lovely city with some of the nicest people I have ever encountered and I have traveled all over the world. I will come back again after COVID. From my vantage point as an American I can not tell you if the people I met, and I met many, were Catholic or Protestant and they didn't seem to care what I was other than they knew right away that I was an American. No, you won't convince me that this city is not beautiful or that it doesn't have some of the friendliest people in the world. PS - I was raised Roman Catholic and to my knowledge I don't have any Irish ancestors.

@@LauraSnow-in3nx It was a hard time for sure, but my mum grew up in Bangor Co Down and most of the neighborhoods were split between Protestant and Catholic and definitely didn't mix. My mum had a catholic dad and a Protestant mum, the equivalent of a mixed marriage in the South during the 60's in the states, so you can only imagine. I'm from Belfast. If you're also from Belfast, write to your local mp, and ask why the housing executive has phone numbers on which they can call paramilitary groups to verify whether intimidation faced by a person was real. These groups are normalised in our society. Its mental. Ask why there is no record kept about which group has made how many threats. These threats, to be burnt out of your home, still go on. The only reason a house hasn't been burnt out is people heed the warning, pack up and move. This now happens almost solely from loyalist paramilitaries. Against Catholics but also racial minorities. It's being denied, understated, and not investigated. Use the freedom of information act to ask the housing executive how many instances of intimidation happened last year across the 6 counties. When they tell you they don't know, ask why it isn't collated? We need new laws. Anyone caught throwing a petrol bomb at another person's house should be done for attempted murder by default. Anyone throwing bricks at another person's house should receive a heavier sentence than just vandalism. It's wilful intimidation. It causes trauma. It's not the same as kids vandalising eg a disused factory.

I’ve crossed this gate/wall at least every week from I’ve been 15, the gates hold so many memories for me. I had to drive through them to get to the royal Maternity hospital twice to pick up my wife and newborn babies and another 2 times when my missus unfortunately had two still borns. I had to cross these gates to go to Springfield tech where I learned how to be a welder, I had to cross these gates when I worked in Conway mill. I crossed these gates to meet a girl I went with when I was 17. I crossed these gates when I run the Belfast marathon twice. You speak to my granda or uncles these walls hold so many bad memories for them I.e rioting or one having his house burnt down just off larnick way. For me being from ballysillan and having this wall and gate in my life it has become normal to see, I don’t think now that when I drive through I’m going to the other side where there may be people who don’t like me for what I am. I’d love the walls to come crashing down and both sides to get on with each other.

Ulster Infidel you talk about respect and preserving your ‘culture’ then say you want an entire side ‘wiped out’, doesn’t add up. Ireland is under British occupation, that’s a fact and will that will change. I’m not a ‘pure breed’ republican, I come from a mixed family who are able to respect each other, unlike ‘pure breed’ loyalist families who pass on their delusions. British culture will always exist in Britain where it belongs.

These walls will only come down when people who live on either side of them feel safe and comfortable living side by side each other. Its easy for people to say take them down theres peace now , if your not from the area that these walls stand around then you wont understand that its not as easy as removing walls and everything will be okay, time is a great healer and when the time is right the walls will be taking down but if you rush into things the conflict between the two sides could reach the point where theres trouble in northern ireland again and all the hard work over the past 20 years will be for nothing.

Good documentary, not much us/them politicking. As one born and bred on the other side of the wall I share the desire for us all to live together in harmony. The only realistic solution is an independent Ulster in which Ulster-British and Ulster-Irish can both feel at home and prosper. In the long term gov.uk will not do what it takes to protect Ulster and gov.ie only pays lip service to a united ireland when it needs the green vote. No, gov.ie cannot and will not ever risk disrupting the ROI economy by taking on 1,000,000 angry Ulster-British. Let us bury the hatchet and make Ulster the greatest nation state on the island of ireland once again.

We have been here in Ireland for 100s of years we are a people and ethnic group that came into existence on this land and although we must respect the Irish we must fight for our right to exist. In a united island we would be subject to the will of the majority and be without our own state. The Republic of Ireland already exists, trying to force us to join them is like England trying to make Scotland part of England due to the anglo saxons that live in the lowlands

The Irish free state ethnically cleansed the Protestants from 20% to 2% and are in denial that a large part of the population, though catholic, is from British ancestry. Ulster Protestants must not surrender- their nationality, culture, religion and identity. I’m glad to see the 12th keeps getting bigger.

@Marcus McGee As for my name we aren't sure how far back it goes if my paternal ancestor just adopted an Irish name or was Irish himself, probably was Irish convert to Protestantism. I have distant Irish ancestry on my mothers side also from a great great grandmother. I am proud of both my Irish and British ancestry, but I don't want to see my ethnic group without a country of our own as I believe it would lead to the eventual dissolution of us as a people and culture.

I lived in Belfast for 16 years from the mid 1990s to 2012. Mainly on the Lisburn Road and Ormeau areas, not far from Queen's University. I have some great memories of nights out in Laverys, the Errigle Bar, Bar Twelve off Botanic Avenue and the pub on the top of Ashley Avenue, the name of which I forget. I actually met the late great snooker player Alex Higgins one night in Dukes Hotel bar. I got some flack from both sides because of my Free State accent. Thankfully I was never beaten up or anything like that. There was an absolutely terrific Indian take-way on the Ormeau. How I miss their garlic nan bread.

Very interesting . I happily drive between the two places and know people from all denominations in west Belfast but because I’m English no one cares..I guess I’m afforded neutrality...People want change especially now with corruptionvirus, people are scared of speaking out . I bet if you asked everyone individually they’d all want the walls down but a few would say no because of what their neighbours might say..

Nothing good ever comes from being divided by a wall. It is a lot better if people and communities could live alongside one another and put their differences aside. Although things have improved there is still a lot of hatred and bigotry in Northern Ireland. I hope that this generation of young people will bring an end to that in Northern Ireland. and bring peace, hope and reconciliation in NI in the future.

I've always known about this God awful wall but the part with the 2nd guy when he was asked if he ever been on the other side... is that a thing? I figured it was a barrier and the gates closed at like 10 but I didn't know that they can't even go over there at all really. My family came to America in the 40s my grandmother came from Wales and grandfather somewhere in Ireland they didn't talk much so not even sure if they meet here or there but if this wall is ever having direct action taken against it to be torn down well call me the Yankee Gorbachev cause I will be there to tear down that wall. This sickens me that no one seems to talk about it or care and that America chooses to ignore it because England is such good friends. Sad.

where are the voices of the young born free of Belfast? Not free of the traditional struggle union or republic, but free of the troubles. As an outsider looking in I'd say Shankhill or Falls I think the youth have more in common now then ever.
