@@bradpotts1747 It always has been. The thing with stories like this one is they seem to magically appear when cuts to the service in question are being planned. You are right, though, unfortunately there are people who love to be made angry by such reporting. I've heard people say "Oh, I only buy that paper because I get so angry with it."
I once had an EMT literally stabilize me by holding me upright basically in a hug lol, because I was in too much agonizing pain to lay down on the way there. My appendix had burst, and he told the ER staff that... They told him and me "it must be gas"... He stayed and missed half a days pay trying to convince the doctors and nurses I was gonna f****ing die. -.- Didn't work... I didn't get in to see anyone until I started to go septic. I almost did die.. BUT! That particular EMT did know exactly what was wrong, and went pretty above and beyond for me. One in a million dude right there.
I want to say one in a million, but as an EMT... we kinda sorta have to argue with nurses more than we would like. Most are good, and I'm not dunking on hospitals.... but I swear sometimes they are... something else.

@@dangerwarg9682 because nurses are a "higher qualification," despite the fact that we hone our skills on the front. Most nurses take us for our word and are rather polite. They also know that sometimes, even we don't get the full story because patients don't want to tell us things. It doesn't usually become a problem overall.
On the subject of "merely stabilizing" a person, I have a buddy who was a paramedic and on his off days did pizza delivery. His fire chief at one point told him they were the same job. "Get 'em there flat and warm."
An EMT delivered my baby in the front seat of my car, and he was calm, reassuring, and did it perfectly (I’m an OB/GYN nurse practitioner, so I can give that expert opinion). Thank you all for the amazing work you do!❤❤❤
This rant was epic... I remember as a young man laying on the side of the road with my left clavicle sticking out of my skin and blood running down my face like a warm slurpee was poured over my head from a motorcycle wreck...minutes later the paramedics arrived from the local fire department and the NOT overweight, NOT kinda stupid, and very professional EMTs unfucked my situation. You guys rock. Keep up the good fight.

Same exact thing happened to me!!! Same bone( left shoulder), motorcycle accident, but bc a deer jump out in front of my bike on a 25mph curve.(was going 50mph) Lost control. Fire dept was there b4 EMT's were bc it was in the middle of know where. They saved my life, the scraping of skin on concrete makes it so it doesn't stop bleeding ever. I guarentee that. But the good news is a met my girlfriend of 10 years now while in recovering at a friend's house. It all worked out.
The "we only work 8 days a month" thing absolutely grinds my gears because basic third-grade arithmetic will tell you that, on a 24 on & 48 off schedule, that's hovering somewhere around a 50 hour work week every week.
What? You're using simple arithmetic? How is a journalist supposed to be expected to master something that complex? They're too busy "objectively" telling us what to think.
Why wouldn't they move you guys to a shift work type deal? like in other fields that need 24 hour staffing that's how it get's done. Figure combine that with overtime/flex and some floating crew for when things inevitably run over the shift end and you could have some stability and get more regular sleep. Clearly this is an obvious solution so I must be missing something I just don't know what it is.
@@7F0X7 interestingly enough my state in Australia has the largest volunteer fire fighting organisation in the world. 70,000 volunteers for the rural fire service. But the structural fire fighters and rescue are mostly professional full time with a backup contingent of "retained" firefighters that are kinda like military reservists. They get paid if they get called but it's not there primary job. There's more of those out in the country though.
@@zyeborm because getting off and on shift is very irregular, even with a 48/96 or 24/48 schedule. My husband’s shift is supposed to end at 7 am but usually he doesn’t get home till 8:30 despite the station only being about 12 min down the street. He works 48/96. That’s 1 shift change every 2 days. Imagine having 4 shift changes in 2 days, it would make things so messy
My wife was an EMT for a little over 20 years, and it left her with a bad back, PTSD and terrible headaches. I want to say thank you to all of you first responders out there for the GREAT job you all do!
When I broke my femur and pinky in a car accident, the firefighters were the ones who got me out of car. Though I was in excruciating pain, cracked jokes with me to get through it. To all the first responders majority of us know the hard work and stress you’re under and appreciate ALL that you do!!!

The apartment I lived in years ago caught fire while I was gone to a store. I came home in the middle of the fire and firefighters were already there. I told them my dog was inside and a firefighter went back in found him brought him out and gave him oxygen while rubbing his chest. Dog was good and that firefighter had my respect for life. Thank you to all firefighters and first responders
Haha, I just thought about the job I'm currently training for in the Navy. We simply heat up some rocks to boil water, which spins turbines and pushes the boat forward. It's not like it's nuclear engineering or anything!
@Fire Department Chronicles i went into Diabetic keto acidosis before, got to the hospital and NO ONE could get an IV in me, except the EMS guy that worked in the ambulance, came in did it in one stick walked away, that guy probably saved my life and definitely my veins from the constant tries. thanks for everything Fire Fighters and EMS do, truly, Thank You.
I’m actually embarrassed how the Karens of today have replaced much of the more appreciative members of society. I make damn sure to support our local paramedics, firefighters, and law enforcement. My wife has been battling multiple medical issues pretty much her entire life, and has experienced a few emergencies requiring immediate attention during our marriage. I can’t show enough appreciation for the support of the professionals that saved the life of my wife more than once. I will be forever grateful. The one that rubs me the wrong way the most as an EMT is the amount of flak that Law Enforcement gets nowadays. Yes, there are bad apples in the bunch, but that happens in literally ANY work situation. I've met more than a few dingleberries that have made me wonder how they even graduated high school, let alone got certified to keep people alive. But the media has all officers now portrayed as "greedy money grabbing ticket writers who like to shoot people of different skin color", and people are buying into it more and more.

33 yrs retired Captain and paramedic.We were told in the broward fire academy...class 75. That the 24/48 schedule was established through a case study that stated it took 48 hours for your body to return to normal after carbon monoxide exposure from working a structure fire. This in essence supported the 24/ 48 schedule well before 1980. Granted Ppe has been greatly improved but the standard schedule is still used. Keep up the awesome work with the videos and stay safe! Sure, when I was struck with what was thought to be a stroke (it wasn't, something else neurological that still affects me), the EMT's 'simply' stabilised me, and we took a 'country drive route' to the hospital. I was in a head on collision car accident two weeks ago on the highway, thank God I walked away with a dislocated/broken wrist and a bruise; it could have been so much worse. My wrist very clearly and obviously looked dislocated and I was fighting consciousness and shock for the first two minutes after with nobody I knew around. The amazing EMT's of the local hospital (two minutes away) made a very easy makeshift splint with a pillow and athletic tape and talked to me through the whole assessment and drive to the hospital, wiping my tears and joking around with me. I am so thankful for them, they didn't have much to do but the one who rode in the back with me did his absolute best to keep my attention off of my very broken wrist and I hope I get to tell them thank you someday, that redirection was all I needed until my family could meet me.
The average person works 40 hrs/week. If a fireman works 9 24hr days in a month, that equates to an average 54 hrs/week. I have been in an accident where I was transported by ambulance. I will forever be grateful for the exceptional care the EMTs provided me. And when my husband, daughter & her dog were in a rollover accident, the EMTs allowed my daughter & her dog to accompany my husband in the ambulance. Thank you for your service.

They are two completely differently specialized positions, in a serious emergency where the difference needs to be known, it can save a life whether it comes down to an EMT or a paramedic. And yes, they are ALL heroes, I wasn't trying to cast shade on either with my observation.
@BeccaHetrick it definitely does matter. Both are heros, but paramedics have different training than EMT's. EMT's can't do IV's to give drugs to patients, administering drugs, etc. *Edit your there's no difference between an EMT and a Paramedic is like saying there's no difference between a nurse practioner and a RN.
My stepdad was a firefighter and EMT for many years before he lost his life. He was one of the best people I've ever known. Completely selfless with a heart of gold. He told me so much about the ins and outs of being a firefighter and EMT. I wish all firefighters and EMTs could be compensated in ways beyond what they deserve. Thank you for mentioning wildland fires. This 8-9 days on shift can quickly turn into weeks, with the hope of getting 12-24 hrs off just so you can go back and continue to fight the ongoing, uncontained, unpredictable fire. This feels like a hit piece.
Thank you, Jason, for pointing out that stat about how 70% of firefighters are volunteers. I suspect that the average member of the general public has no idea about this. And given that even some career firefighters are occasionally a bit disparaging towards volunteers, it's nice to hear somebody of your stature point out the key role that volunteers play.
I have a lot of respect for volunteers and firefighters in general, but volunteers really deserve it. I grew up in Roanoke, among the huge ass star and other things there claim to fame was that the town had the worlds first volunteer fire department. I don’t know how true that is but it’s interesting nonetheless.
And also, we may work only 9 shifts a month, but that’s 216 hours a month vs. a typical 9-5 job which is about 170 hours if you get a 30 minute lunch break
I was a firefighter/ Emergency medical responder for several years in Melbourne. I remember the first time I saved a patients life after a massive heart attack using CPR. When we arrived he was all-but dead. His skin was already turning blue and his eyes were lifeless. I started compressions immediately while my brothers readied the defibrillator and oxygen. After several rotations I saw the light return to his eyes and his skin colour change; it was a moment of grace for me. We did a handover to the Ambo’s and they transported him to hospital, where he made a full recovery. At the end of shift I went home and drank single malt scotch and cried. I felt that I had justified my own life by saving someone else’s, it brings me to tears just writing this. I retired in 2021 having responded to countless similar situations. Proud to have served🇦🇺🚒🇦🇺
My dad was a firefighter. He worked so much that I asked my mom if he still lived with us when I was kid. He worked 4 days on, 4 days off and had a second job on the 4 days off because firefighters aren't paid enough.
May fave thing about this is he totally losses his shit but never actually insults them. He's able to accurately and humorously express himself without resorting to insults I really respect even when he jokes about getting the research from interns watching TV there's a modicum of pity for the poor intern But then that's the kind of professionalism and empathy you'd want from a firefighter/paramedic
Agreed. The weight of facts deals a better punch to the face than any insult. The man knows it and takes full advantage of it. Irony based on facts can be the ultimate tool in verbal warfare.

the ems crew that responded to my brothers suicide were amazing, i had broken my leg and ankle running down the stairs after hearing the gunshot, they took care of me and kept me calm and gave me anxiety medication so i wouldnt have a panic attack, they brought blankets to me and my family as it was in january and it was extremely cold outside. those people are literal angels
These people are awesome. I'll never forget the guy who took care of me when they responded to my brother's murder. He sat on the pavement with me to make sure I was ok when he found me running down the street after I had to step over the body to get help.
My first thought when she said they're out of shape and have heart attacks was that they have one of the most demanding jobs physically and no matter how in shape you are, it takes its toll. But knowing now about the added medical risk, it's mind boggling that they don't have more fatalities
They're built different. Also, knowing about the problems helps massively in reducing/preventing them, and properly recover, so the wear and tear can be slowed down, I think!
He didn't really go into detail, but the BMI/Obese thing is the dumbest thing ever if you aren't actually sedentary. It literally only looks at height & weight to decide if you are "obese". Anyone with any appreciable muscle is at risk of being "overweight" on this scale. Senior year of highschool I remember us doing both calipers and BIA to measure actual body fat. Turns out that I had only ~4% body fat while also being considered "obese". I don't know about you, but to me looking like Dwayne Johnson isn't what obese means. (Quick google for his height & weight also shows he would be considered "obese" according to this reporter lol)
And don't forget the poisonous smoke and gases from fires. Sure, we're wearing our air supply and mask when we go in. But ever realized, how it smells around a fire? That's all poisonous gasses and small particles (btw: most people die of the smoke not from the heat). Now, firefighters get in and are protected. They come out and believe me, you'll want that stupid mask from your face as quickly as possible! It's hot under there, you're almost drowning in your own sweat (ok, that might not be entirely true ;)). But you've been in there. Your clothes have taken up soot and gasses. All really nasty stuff (cyanide, dioxine, chlorine. You name it). The outside of your jacket is hot. So, you get your mask off and breath in a unhealthy dose of those warm gases that rise from your gear. Nice! We have procedures in place to reduce the risk. But they are not perfect. And believe me: when you're coming out of a fire, you're not really in the mood to spend 20 minutes getting undressed on the scene and getting into clean clothes.
@@EarlLeeByrd that's not how it works though. BMI is just an indicator. No one with a sane brain takes just one number and goes from there. That's just how lazy people spin it to find an excuse which allows them to ignore the obvious. "You are fat because that one number said so" no one ever said when looking at Arnold Schwarzenegger. People, not only medical educated people, understand the difference between muscles and fat very well without much education needed. You just look at a person an immediately know which it is. Btw.: massive muscles aren't exactly healthy either. They often lead into severe cardiovascular problems. So it's not as if a BMI of 40 would suddenly indicate a healthy body, if the amount of fat was below 20% ...

Honestly i would love to know how they got the idea that 70% are obese. My guess: they go with the most simple BMI calculations, which dont differentiate between fat and muscle. Since muscle is way heavier than fat most well trained/strong people will scale as "obese". It is extremly dishonest to frame it like that!

If someones entire job is to show up and read a teleprompter while displaying some level of charisma, then I'm not shocked that they think other jobs are just as simple. Seriously basically no one who talks on TV actually knows a damn thing they are saying and read the info a mere 2 seconds before they regurgitate it. Yet they think they are the "real" workers.
I genuinely think that's what they were saying, I can only hope that the level of stupidity displayed by the Wall Street journal people in the video he's responding to is relatively isolated, because I can guarantee that I can go to the absolute middle of nowhere in the developing country I live in and even they would know that they don't have the entire effing hospital in the vehicle they are in
“Most firefighters are obese” last time I checked to get into the fire academy u have to go through a physical test where u have to wear 75 pounds on ur back climb a certain number of flights of stairs and go through a huge obstacles course I’m just like 5 minutes and 56 seconds

Not only are most of them actually professional, in shape, knowledgeable, etc, but also they really care. I don't know how many patients one can remember, but after seeing hundreds, to remember one that wasn't that special is amazing! What do I mean? Let me explain... When I was 8 years old, the right rear wheel of a 1980 Buick station wagon ran over my waist. I don't know if it was that or me walking on it immediately after, but my pelvis broke. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and a few months in a wheelchair. When I was in 7th grade, 12 years old, so 4 years later, I was in special ed classes. One of these classes went to tour a nearby fire station. When we got inside, several EMTs and firefighters were present. One of the EMTs looked right at me, recognized me, asked if I was (my real name) and when I confirmed, he said he was one of the medics in the ambulance the day I was run over. I was shocked but also felt really good because this complete stranger, who has certainly seen hundreds of patients and certainly seen at least a few more unique situations than my own, remembered not only my face, but my name. I will always be grateful to that guy because of the second meeting more than the first. 🙂🙂🙂
Amazing story ! First responders are heroes . The things they see everyday I couldn't fathom to take home mentally. That's why it takes a certain kind of special people to do those jobs.
My dad was a volunteer fireman when my sister and I were little (and before we were born). He told us stories that would turn anyone's hair white.... Like the story of a man my father grew up with who got into a car accident and had a guardrail penetrating through his chest (probably one of the reasons why they redeveloped guardrails) and literally all my dad and the other first responders could do was hold this man and comfort him while he died... And this was back in the late '70s and early '80s, there were no cell phones. If there HAD been cell phones back then, my dad would have given this guy his to let him call his family to say goodbye....
They probably thought about you a lot, wondering if you ended up ok. You were a kid, and though professional at the time, that shit probably stuck with them. But they would still be glad to have been there to help you nonetheless. It probably meant a lot to see you ok all that time later.
@@BeccaHetrickI know of a few offspring of first responders and they have it rough. Their dads are so overprotective because of what they see on a daily basis that they don't let their kids get away with anything. Plus, they set early curfews and run through safety precaution standards. The daughters are so protective that a few of them need chaperones (an older brother) to tag along. Having a first responder as a parent is a double edge sword. Great if you have a medical emergency but horrible too because now the parent knows what kind of trouble you may have gotten into. All first responders talk about who's up to what...word gets around fast.
I’m a Brazilian Anaesthesiologist and here pre-hospital care is divided into 2 different kinds of response: the ambulance with doctors riding them and the ambulances without the doctor. Although they’re all trained as pre hospital responders together. So when a person calls emergency a regulator decides, based on a couple os acessment questions, which ambulance to send. Pre hospital care is absolutely life saving and changes completely the prognosis of the patient! Furthermore, in addition to dealing with the life threatening situation itself, the first responder has to work with non ideal environment conditions and very challenging situations imposed by the scene. It’s an amazing hard job that requires constant training! 👏🏻👏🏻
My mom was a volunteer firefighter when I was a young teen. She also was a certified EMT. She was a "Part time" worker but there was so much that went on that she would work just about any hour of the day and night. So she basically did work full time. She even had the special light on the family van and many times there would be a call on the radio and we'd stop our shopping and she'd speed through the streets with the lights on to the emergency spot. Then before she got out, she'd tell us kids to duck and keep quiet cause we weren't supposed to be with her on these runs. There were quite a few car crashes and house fires. I think one was a heart attack victim. One woman about to give birth or something. I was just a kid then, and yeah it was cool hanging around the fire station and going to their yard sales and cook outs. And hayrides in the fall. But it was also a pretty stressful (and boring) job. Back then they were underpaid. Minimum wage in my state for firefighters was $9.00 even for the paid ones. They're probably still underpaid. I remember the chief was battling cancer or something so I doubt he's still alive today. There were these twins who were volunteer firefighters and they were a bit odd but funny and were hard workers. We were in the town parade. There was just a lot of interesting things that went on.
As a height worker, and former law enforcement officer, I have nothing but mad respect for firefighters everywhere. Y'all are a bunch of badasses and this dude thanks you guys for doing your job
I almost died several years ago. I have no idea what happened other than what I was told. My mom came over to check on me after she couldn't get a hold of me by phone and found me barely breathing. I don't remember even being in the ambulance or being treated, but I want to send a HUGE thank you to them for helping me and getting me to the hospital. I am very thankful for people like you dude❤️❤️❤️
I cannot tell you how many times EMS & FIREFIGHTERS have directly saved my family members lives, who without them, may not have made it to the hospital in time! And firefighters and EXTREMELY STRONG!!! 🖤❤️🖤

I had two friends who were identical twins, and they were both obese. They became firefighters and by the time they were done training, they both looked like new people.

Their family owned a the one small trash collecting business, opposed to waste management, so I'm sure they had some decent good old boy system connections.They were also genuinely great dudes, very likeable.

We take care of our own, and of our guests. The one thing that's made me proudest, is everywhere I go, somebody tells me a story about how well they were treated by my kin. It's pretty cool to hear an Italian immigrant in SF tell you a story about a friend from back home helping them out.. :)
I was still a school police officer when this happened in front of me. About 200 Ft. south of a major intersection at approx. 1615 hours on a school day when I heard and saw a L.A. Co. fire dept. paramedic unit rolling code 3 (lights and siren) northbound on this 4 lane street headed for the east/west 4 lane cross street. I then saw 4 jr. high kids wait until the squad was about 100 ft. from them then started walking very slow across the street causing the squad to brake abruptly while laying on the air horn. Tragedy was averted and the kids walked away laughing to a burger restaurant nearby. I then drove to the same restaurant, contacted the miscreants and issued them citations along with notifying their parents and had them respond to our location. Hope that did them some good. I know if I was called by the cops about my kid(s) doing the same thing, the appropriate discipline would have been dealt out.

My brother is a paramedic and is currently in nursing school. I’m high school he was in an EMT class and was an intern with a fire department. The things he saw scarred him but he hasn’t given up helping people and wanting to be his best. So all my support to first responders.
Firefighters and EMTs saved my daughter's life. Took them over an hour to get her out of the car that was stuck in a tree. They also came to the hospital and checked to see how she was on more than one occasion. I know without a doubt they had just as much to do with her making it through as her doctors and nurses did. You guys are my heroes.
Back when I was teenager I considered going into the news industry. I picked up some media electives at my high school and volunteered at my local news network. One of the first things I learned was that drama sells much faster than warm-hearted stories. They'll target any group and smear them up if it'll bring in views. The only reason they won't is if a particular group has the power to negatively impact their reputation
I went through the same thing in highschool and when entering college. I had respect for people that reported news that was needed, even if it wasn't wanted. Mostly unbiased folks that weren't afraid to get into situations and interview anybody in order to bring light to a situation I gave up on that ideal after entering college. We're in the age of just yellow journalism and arrogant journalists and reporters that think they're better than others because they talk down to a group of people. Utterly pathetic and really disappointing
My husband was studying journalism in college in the 80s and the professor in charge of the campus newspaper said "I don't care if it's true or not, I want a good story"
as someone who lost a home to a housefire and had to be treated for smoke inhalation I'd like to thank the firefighters and the EMS who responded to the call after 2:30am and helped calm down my then just turned 16 year old self and to thank you for getting there so quickly. I hope you and yours stay safe and healthy!
BMI is a terrible measure of obesity, as you say. Two years ago, one of our city's most celebrated firefighters died from a heart attack. He was 53 years old. After finishing a 24 hour shift, he went on his routine run, which he did at the end of every shift because firefighters kind of need to be in shape to do their jobs. He called his wife in the middle to say he was feeling unwell and headed back, then collapsed at the backdoor of the station. The crew found him pretty much immediately and began life-saving measures, and they were able to reestablish a pulse. Unfortunately, he never regained brain activity, and his family made the heartbreaking decision to let him pass. On top of that, he was an organ donor, so he got to dave another life at the end of his. He was a fit, healthy guy who was pretty young for a heart attack. It was absolutely tragic. I'm incensed to hear it implied firefighters die from heart attacks at a higher rate because of alleged obesity, based on a faulty measurement scale. Also, I wonder how much PFAS have to do with the higher incidence rate. PFAS have been linked to blood clots, higher cholesterol levels, and cardiovascular disease. Not to mention cancer, the number one killer of firefighters. And guess what has been found in all three layers of turnout gear? Yep. The IAFF released a warning and advised any replacement gear going to forward should be PFAS-free, and gear that cannot be replaced should be thoroughly cleaned and stored securely outside of the station when not in use. So, you know... There's that. Anyway, I'm going to go be sad about Firefighter Dan now....
My dad said he was the one that had to inform 3 little kids that their mom couldn’t be resuscitated and had sadly passed away. Paramedics and firefighters don’t have it easy. And they get no time to process any of the traumatic experiences they have at work because they have a 48 hour overtime weekend that they have to get through.

My dad was a gymnast and was technically morbidity obese though out his entire child hood and teenage years while having six-pack abs and working out for 8-12 hours a week.
Yes. I will never forget how according to the bmi scale in high school. This 4ft some football player (so muscles and physically fit) was considered obese. U could just look at the guy and know that was complete bullshit, he was skinny af. Like he wasn’t even strong man “fat”
I had heard a definition before of 20lbs of body fat being a marker for obesity. While obviously a flat number won't work for everyone, I think fat content would be a better indicator than bmi
@Jason Hammond Fun fact - the BMI scale was literally made under the supervision of private weight loss companies. Meaning that their intention was to make people think they were fat and therefore spend more money on their products and fad diets. They also only took white people into account, meaning that basically all black and brown people will be automatically considered to be even more overweight than most white and Eastern Asian people.
When I measured myself on the BMI scale as a joke , it through out my rate of heart attack as likely. Even though I had a full blood workup to say I was just fine. Why do they let 'science' like this out of the basement?
There was a fire in my 25 story building. The FFs had to walk up those 25 flights to get wheelchair bound people and carry them down 25 flights. Then back up 25 flights to check the next apartment. They did this repeatedly until they checked every single apartment from the top to the ground. All while wearing that heavy gear. F*cking next level super hero’s. I will forever be amazed and grateful.
To add to the part about obesity: Chronic stress and sleep deprivation heavily increase your risk of obesity and other health complications! It's an ouroboros of health deterioration.

Frankly, I cook a lot, but it's usually easy stuff like soups and such. Soup is even easier than microwave. Microwave can burn, but soups are soups. Meat, water, spice, timer, toppings, done.
not to mention with shifts like that it's harder to factor in time for a consistent eating or exercising scedule. Snacks get you through shifts when you don't have time to eat.
When a neighbor's apartment caught fire early last month firefighters got there in under FOUR minutes and kept the fire from spreading beyond the two apartments that caught. Thank you for all you do, more people could have been hurt and displaced if not for them.
This may not seem important to a lot of people, but firefighters save pets, too. When a fire burned down most of my apartment building a number of years ago, firefighters found my four cats and got them to safety. I was at work when all this happened-not there to tell anyone that cats were in my apartment. I was so grateful for the compassion of those men!
I went splat in the ice at the end of February this year. I live rurally. Some fun. Open compound fracture. There I was at 6:30 in the morning in my nightgown and fzuzy pajama pants, 26°. I had to crawl back inside to get to the phone to call 911. I, naturally, bled like stink all the way from point of landing to the phone. Quite the mess. They came, they taco'd my ankle in a pillow, they cleaned up a LOT of the blood while others were taking me in to town to the hospital. I have no real memory between 9 or so, and 4:30 when I woke up post surgery. Once I was up and stable on both feet, I made a HUGE batch of cookies to say thank you. I could never begin to thank them as much as they deserved it!
Oh, but the only thing amazing" about any of this is how badly so-called "journalism" has fallen. Like you said, there used to be editorial standards, multiple groups of people checking for errors, be they copy or factual.
My mum had mini strokes, my stairs were too narrow with a sharp curve, the paramedics picked her up and carried her down as the stretcher wouldn’t fit. She only weighed about 85 pounds so one guy basically cradled her down the stairs. Because of them and amazing hospital staff she made a full recovery.
My two brushes with firefighters: I was a melodramatic 16 yo girl and burned a letter from an ex and tossed it out if my bedroom onto a pile of dry leaves. I had expected it to go out but when if lit the leaves I grabbed the BIGGEST glass I could find and filled it (in retrospect) slowly and when I came back with it and knew looking at it it would do no good. I ran outside intending to use the hose lol and by then the fire could be seen from the front of the house over the roof. Fortunately some person in a sports car had stopped in the middle of the street and called 911 so they got it put out with only some damage to the air conditioner that was right beside it, some siding on the house and a lot of crap taken from my mom for months for the damage. I remember my mom marching me up to the guy in charge and I had to explain what happened to him. Second: I was hanging out with a friend after moving out and there was a little concrete section in front of the steps of the house and my friend and I grab a bunch of twigs in the yard and make a small fire which we watched the whole time and was separated several feet from anything else that could catch. Nevertheless, we're jist sitting there chilling on the steps when a fire truck pulls up with it's lights off. We both look at each other like, is that for us? The firefighters come walking up with only their pants, not jackets on, and are grinning. They explained that a neighbor had called and that we couldn't have a fire like that, but that it should at least be contained in a hibachi. They said if we cooked something over it they said they could say it was a cooking fire. We went inside and looked for suitable cooking food and argued over who was going to cook it because the firefighters were HOTTER than the flames they needed to put out (buff and everything) and neither one of us wanted to look silly. In the end we sheepishly said we didn't have anything and the firefighter put it out with a bucket lmao.
My best/favorite time in ministry (I’m clergy) was as the chaplain with a local volunteer department. Average folks have no idea what a firefighter puts in for their work; realize most firefighters in the US are volunteers; or that the men and women who do this work do it mostly out of love of service and their community. For some it was making a living (EMS service), sure, but love of service and their community always shone through. A full heart and hats off in respect to all our firefighters. Thanks for what you do.

As a Truckee native who's spent a fair amount of time in the various fire stations around town, I can confirm that every single firefighter I have met here is insanely physically fit.
I remember I got into a bad car accident one time and my daughter was with me she was fine thank god but I got put into an ambulance and I remember I started crying and don’t know why I was but this emt comforted me and made me feel safe and I’ll never forget that
I know this is an old video but that comment about the obesity scale hit hard. In highschool I was a swimmer. My thighs were solid muscle. I swam 2 hours a day 5 days a week and did morning workouts before school every so often. I was 135 at 5'3" and was told I was obese. Think of how much as a 16 year old girl it impacted me to hear that. Gee I wonder why I had depression and developed an eating disorder.
The obesity scale that is most commonly used is both sexist and outdated. It's based on male physiology, and certainly not suitable for a 16-year-old female athlete! I'm sorry that hsppened.

There is plenty of side charts that give the equivalent body fat percent to match the male scale so let’s just say 10% on a male will look like 20% on a female and the chart will tell you that. You just THINK because the percentage is higher that it’s bad when it’s not. Not to mention what does it even matter what a chart says much less knowing your exact fat content. If you look great in the mirror you look great, if you’re not happy with the image then try to plan ways to change it. A lower number doesn’t always mean you’ll look better👍🏻
@@deathlineee24Factually correct but I think you missed the original point, precisely because of the physical differences. Women naturally have more fat (and need to!) but we're still measured by male standards. So 20% might be fine theoretically, but in practice, people just saw women being "fatter" then men, even though they might actually be in healthier shape.

To begin with, the index was developed by Belgian Adolphe Quetelet, in the mid-1800’s. His goal? To literally determine values for what he thought was the “Ideal Man.” It was NEVER intended to be used for medicine and he collected the data under the label “Social Physics-“ aka, Eugenics. So you’re jumping in to defend, what is clearly a very biased, outdated, prejudice index… because that is EXACTLY what it was designed to do. And you maybe surprised to know, we haven’t really updated it. So yes, a chart developed over a 100 years ago to determine one man’s idea of the “Ideal (Belgian) Man,” will show a prejudice towards other races and females.

No muscular men and woman doesn't have a huge difference between normal weight for their height - but there is still a HUGE variation (even among the same sex) for zillion reasons. But I don't understand why it is a problem. Why doctors can't use their EYES... Or measure bodyfat if they don't have proper ones. It's so stupid telling a dry, muscular guy that he is obese :D Not even overweight, not even normal, extreme low body fat and it obviously shows :D Isn't it glaringly obviously and very well known that not the weight for the height is what matters at health? What if the one lacks a whole leg and the other is a stick, they can be quite fat and still at ideal weight so all is well? Oh my. I would expect some common sense from... Well everyone but that's not this world I know but at least from intelligens professionals... Nope, they still focus on the wrong things. I just ignore the woman is fattier things as I can't do much with that. They have more bodyfat as they need it, otherwise it's pretty hard to compare... We can get the bodyfat percentage and try to substract something but what exactly? :D It doesn't matter, health matter, sometimes looks but mostly health. And BMI only points out extreme cases so shouldn't be used for people with a possibly okay weight. When I was less experienced, I thought it's so obviously everyone professional handles it like that and even if they wouldn't, a look to the patient would help. I was wrong.
Imagine someone would lay on the ground with his arm cut off and the medics would tell him "We´re sorry, but we can´t help you, because we don´t know what´s wrong with ya!"
And we're not even mentioning all the rescue stuff, like my son, who was a volunteer fire fighter during Hurricane Harvey, where, in our little town south of Houston, we got that 52 inches of rain. He spent 4 DAYS in a boat, pulling people out of houses, cars, attics, etc. At one point he came to check on us. Our house is just high enough not to have gotten water inside, but he was also helping load an air boat in our front yard. So yeah, they do more than fires and wrecks. You try 4 days in bunker gear in a boat in the summer with houses flooded to the rafters, dragging old folks and disabled people out of their flooded residences and having them get upset for not wanting to get taken away from their house.
I'm a volunteer fire fighter in Australia and I can relate to your videos so much. I'm also a nurse who has done 24 hour shifts and after no sleep, you go a bit crazy. Keep up the great videos.
Man I've never understood Dr's and nurses doing 24 hour shifts. We need to pay you guys more, so that there's more of you and you can sleep and still look after us. Thanks for what you do!
My house burned in 1986. The firefighters were amazing in that terrible time. When my mother was very old and ill, they were so kind and caring when they had to lift her off the floor. I've never seen such fit men in one place. Not an ounce of fat anywhere. And incredibly kind. Still and always heroes.
I was thinking about the fat shaming. It's true who do you want to respond? one of those tiny bike guys? or someone who can carry you down a ladder on their back out of a burning building? My sister sets aside her parasol and breaks out her fan when the hot fireman calendar arrives.
It’s weird. There’s an Australian Firefighters calendar that comes out every year. Two, actually. One with all kinds of animals, and one just with kittens. And those are some serious beefcake calendars. I’m not much for beefcake or cheesecake or any kind of cake that doesn’t arrive on a plate, but those shirtless dudes raising money for animals threatened by wildfires are popular for a reason.

Thanks for that nod to vollies. Everyone in my town assumes we are full time, which I guess is a compliment. They always get surprised to hear that we do this for very little to no compensation.
That last little bit reminded me of something that really irks me. These huge forest fires are mostly due to stupid people fighting against perscribed fires/fire management. Fires are extremely beneficial to biodiversity and fire climax species not to mention NECESSARY for keeping these catastrophy level fires away that completely destory seed beds.
This policy - essentially, suppressing only human-cause fires or wildfires which threaten infrastructure - has been in place for many years - barring unusual circumstances. "Firefighter and public safety are the U.S. Forest Service’s top priority in wildfire response. The U.S. Forest Service response to all human-caused wildfires is suppression. In certain locations, when conditions are right, the agency response to natural wildfire may be to manage it to reduce fuels and restore ecosystems that benefit from fire."
Anyone who slanders the work firefighters and EMTs do, doesn't deserve it. Simple as that. As a healthcare worker, my respect for you is intense and eternal. You are heroes.
Oh - they extricated me out of a car after a seizure on a highway- was rushed Level 1 to a hospital and the fact that I'm still alive even if i don't remember crap is amazing- they have saved my life and I am grateful. I don't care if they were obese or any other insult thrown at them on that news piece - I am glad they are able to stick to protocol and save lives
