I always make it a habit to watch one of those Walton's scenes with the clan collected twice. Once to follow the action as the director intended. And then I watch specifically Ellen Corby and Will Geer in that same scene, to see what these veterans are doing and how they are reacting. Watch Corby. Those hands never stop moving, the facial muscles are rarely relaxed. This old woman has been 'multi-tasking' for 50 years and her hands hardly ever stop doing something as she listens and reacts to what Jim Bob, or Erin is saying. She is not only 'in the moment', she is in 'two moments' with green beans to snap, or soup to stir, or knitting in her lap or a table to clear. that's not a a piece of direction, that is Corby making sure that those hands aren't still, that the no time get wasted on 'chit chat', that her character stays defined and disciplined every second on camera Watch Geer use his body, his hands, face, his eyebrows. He's always touching someone( usually Ellen), or interacting, staying connected one with another character nearby while the main action is going on. This is a man who is constantly expressing affection, never letting 10 seconds pass by without nurture, humor love, and empathy. Its a co-dependency. He is as addicted to showing love, others are in need. There is never a frame of film to waste, 'just' sitting on a bench, or 'just' standing nearby These scenes are masterclasses in acting, if you know where to look for your lesson plan
