The Waltons period clothes were a wonderful part of the show. From John Boy (Richard Thomas) and Mary Ellen's (Judy Norton) overalls, to the Baldwin sisters vintage dresses and hats. Corabeth Godsey's fashion flair and the John Waltons every day work clothes. We went from poor depression wear and barefoot to the fabulous fashion of the 40's.
Guest stars like Pippa Scott as The Actress - showcased fox wraps, and Walton siblings played hand- me-down with dresses.
In this behind the scenes of The Waltons - we take a look at how the wardrobe department worked. Originally headed by Oscar nominated costume designer Patricia Norris (10 Years a Slave) we went from Warner Bros wardrobe stock to shopping "off the rack" for 40's inspired looks in later seasons.
Come join Judy Norton for this glimpse into The Walton Clothes.

Yeah... Great wardrobe authenticity in the show always... Loved it when Mary Ellen opted to buy a dress instead of the baseball glove... Even though she took it back, I saw Erin wearing that dress in a later episode... Also there several storylines regarding clothing... I remember Olivia wanting a "Store Bought" dress ... And the awesome episode where Olivia fashions some dresses for the Baldwin from beautiful silks from their fabric trunk. LoL... Can't forget Elizabeth and the doll had matching dresses.. Lollllll 😲

Judy, I loved all the ladies 👗 dresses in The Waltons!! I remember you had a black dress you wore a couple times. I think to your quilting and when you went to Godsey’s store with that British director. It was very pretty on you. @@l.m.malcolm2685 They were kind of a cotton blend and had prints on them. The ones I had were flowered. We wore them til they were worn out. I think some people might think they were burlap when you hear feedsack. Now that would be rough, lol!!!!!!
@davidvogel6359
@davidvogel6359 3 года назад
@@l.m.malcolm2685 you are probably thinking about burlap bags being feed sacks and they would have been for larger gains like corn or beans. The feed sacks she is talking about for dress making were a tighter weave that would have held flour or corn meal. That would have spilled out between the strings of the burlap woven bag.

one of my favourite episodes was when the Baldwin sisters gave Elizabeth enough purple fabric to make a dress for her and her dolly. This doesn't have anything to do with The Walton's, but in 1982 I got a job at the Magnavox TV factory in Greeneville TN on the night shift. Everyone I saw dressed factory casual. It was requested that I work a double shift filling in for the person doing my job on the day shift. This was a huge factory with 3,000 employees and it was a long walk to the cafeteria. Walking past a line assembling circuit boards that control the TV's I noticed the strangest thing...Older women that had worked there for decades, sitting elbow to elbow, were dressed like they were going to a party! I was baffled by what l saw, then it finally occurred to me. These women had been doing these jobs for 30-40 years, making good money for the area, and were basically dressing to impress each other! The jobs were hard, putting small parts into tiny holes, but they had done it so long they were almost robotic. I guess since they could easily afford it, they were going to look there best. Loved this segment! The almost- radical departure from your regular on-set attire seemed to give the subject of today's narrative away even before I clicked "start"! And I too remember that subtle, quasi-40's fad back in the 70's - pin stripes, narrow ties, broad-brimmed hats and wing-tips for men and below-knee length for women! I think it lasted until 1976 or so when (uuugh) "Disco" appeared up out of the sludge and took over the fashion world... Your insight into the day-to-day runnings if WB's wardrobe department piqued my interest: we never delved much into style and creation - only substance as it pertained to factoring in wardrobe into production costs. Also interesting that direction allowed the cast a bit of leeway in choice of costumage for comfort or personal reasons. Very generous! Last but not least: As Mary Ellen, you looked "Fah-bu-lous, dah-ling" wearing that period-accurate dress in the "goodbye" scene. It fit perfectly and the accompanying coiffe capped it off! Looking forward to Monday!🙂

But I'm retired now and there are so many things about "The Waltons" that parallel my own life that I would like to talk to you about some of them if that would acceptable to you. For example, like Curtis, my father was a doctor abd was in the reserves when Pearl Harbor happened. In fact, he was serving on active duty that weekend and his whole unit had their group picture taken. i still have the photo dated December 6th 1941 the day before the Pearl Harbor attack. He was sent to the Pacific along with my uncle Jim. They both served in New Guinea, Borneo, and the Philippines. Both survived the war and came home in one piece but my Dad's absence contributed never to my mother's mental illness and she never recovered. There are a lot of other similarities that I would like to share with you.if yopou would like to hear them.

I have a question for "Ask Judy". Today I was watching the episode The Outrage part 1. In the early part of the episode, you all are sitting at the table eating and for the first time I can remember John Curtis talks to John and said he got something from Pat. I couldn't understand everything he said but everyone laughed and John just rolls with it and says "who is Pat? Is she at the farm down the road?" So my question, was that a blooper I caught? By the way, thank you for all if the behind the scenes!

Every time I've seen that episode, I've always thought about it could be been altered, to make it look less like a girl's shirt, and more like a boy's. The collar could've been reshaped, to give a straight edge, as opposed to the scalloped edging, and the sleeves could've been let out, to get rid of that gathered, puffy look, and the even the buttons and button holes, could've been switched from one side to the other. I just think all thsy, every time I've watched that episode, and if all that had been done, maybe Jim Bob wouldn't have gotten beat up, though it's nice that Mary Ellen defended him. I guess, maybe the thought was, Olivia didn't have time to do all that extra tailoring, running the whole house like she did. Still....
