The War of 1812 and The Star-Spangled Banner with Deirdre O'Sullivan.
On September 12, 1814, the British Army and the Royal Navy arrive in Baltimore, MD. In August, the British Army defeats the American Army at the Battle of Bladensburg outside of Washington, DC. The British Army takes Washington, DC, and most federal buildings including the White House are burned. The British Army then heads north to Baltimore. Protecting the city and its harbor is Fort McHenry built in 1800; housing about 1,000 men. In an 27 hour timeframe, the Royal Navy fires more than 1,500 cannonballs, shells and rockets at the fort. On the morning of September 14, the largest American flag anyone had ever seen is raised proving that the fort was not prepared to surrender.
This online presentation will be an introduction into:
* A brief synopsis of history that leads up to the War of 1812
* In June 1812, President Madison requests a Declaration of War against Great Britain and Congress agrees. The U.S. makes several attempts to invade Canada. It does not go according to plan.
* In the spring of 1814, the British invade Washington, DC and Baltimore. Score one for the British and one for the Americans.
* The Drafting of the Star Spangled Banner
* The signing of Treaty of Ghent in December 1814 and summary of the Winners and Losers.
The War of 1812 is a chapter of American history that is not as well-known as the American Revolutionary War or the US Civil War. This presentation will provide a general overview of the conflict focusing on Battle of Fort McHenry in particular.
Deirdre O’Sullivan is a well-known member of the non-profit community organization Washington DC History & Culture. For the last several years, she has conducted online presentations on Irish History, the American Revolution, the Battle of Gettysburg (U.S. Civil War), the Great War (WWI), the Battle of Midway (WWII) and 9/11 at the Pentagon. She has a great interest in History and enjoys sharing her knowledge.
