I'll give you some more to try , the "Sixsters" (Ukraine all female under 18) , Motion Device or maybe under new name "Quarter after Three" (Canada another family band/metal) and "Dea Matrona" (Ireland) .
The Warning & Band Maid have mutual respect for each other and are fans of each other as well. They've already met and there's pictures of them together. I'm sure they'll do a tour together in the future.
@@psychologyofrockit will happen next summer. Band-Maid and The Warning will play a joint show in Tokyo. If they play a song together I'll die a happy man (bonus points if that song is Warning by Band-Maid).
The Warning have it all. They are musical geniuses, wholesome and healthy role models, beautiful, creative, and the sweetest badass rock band on planet earth!
I heard Liliac before Band-Maid & The Warning. Not just between the 3, the maids & the Villarreal sisters are my favorite rock bands today & that's after 70 years of rock.
BAND-MAID shook up the rock world for me with the release of their very first video "Thrill" in 2015 which has over 18 million views so far. Suddenly i wasn't sad anymore that there was no more fresh music from my rock heroes like The Beatles, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Rush and many more. BAND-MAID brought a new perspective and a much fresher sounding "classic rock" to my ears and I instantly fell in love with them. there has not been a single day since discovering BAND-MAID in 2016 that I have not listened to their music. a couple of years ago i discovered The Warning and once again I was blown away so you have no idea how happy it made me to see and hear that BAND-MAID and The Warning are fans of each other and even publicly said they would love to do a collab of some sort. my dream concerts would be to see The Warning open for BAND-MAID in Japan and BAND-MAID open for The Warning in Mexico. such incredible talent!! thanks for the awesome, well thought out and presented video of these 3 talented bands. BAND-MAID the best in the east and The Warning the best in the west and to Lilliac keep working hard, you have lots of talent and are still getting better and thanks for keeping rock alive!
Well, your wish is coming true. The Warning and Band-Maid are going to do a show together in Japan this year. I wish I could be there for it. Here's hoping that you can attend.
I quit going to concerts literally 40 years ago, and then I found The Warning. They made me actually want to go to a show, so I went to see them live and was blown away. Also met them and found them to be genuinely sweet and humble and appreciative of their fans. No other band ever gave me that vibe.
Yes! I can completely relate. I had given up on finding new music and had listened to the same albums for decades. The Warning was the first of these bands I found and they changed everything for me. To me their sound is perfect, and they are the full package. :)
I can't speak for the other 2 fan base but TWA is loyal because the look to the girls as sisters, daughters grandchildren etc . They followed them from the start supposed them through kick starter up til now. And will defend them against haters and trolls.
Some of us are newer fans though and still feel that way a bit, but I’m obsessed with them as young adults,so the great thing is that even those who find them now can get as involved as those who were involved since they were children. They are just that amazing!
Definitely agree that I root for The Warning not only because of their music but also because they are so genuine and kind towards everyone and have a stronger connection to their fans than a lot of other bands
Fun fact: Rick Beato is a close friend of David Bendeth who produced The Warning's Error album. I like Band-Maid and I am familiar with some of Liliac's original music, but I think the first exposure I had to them was their covers. They are excellent musicians and I have no doubt that they can play just about anything but they may have done themselves a disservice by doing so many covers early on, so much so that a lot of people may only know about their covers. In the case of Liliac and The Warning, being kids playing covers was the schtick that propelled them forward. Now that they have outgrown that it is time to advance their careers on the merits of their musical talents. The strength of both Band-Maid and The Warning is their large catalog of original music. In both cases they made a conscious decision to do original music to the exclusion of virtually anything else. It's a gamble when a band is unknown but in both cases, it has worked out well. Even so, in The Warning's case, they did a cover of Enter Sandman with Alessia Cara and within their community Pau and Dany individually share some impressive acoustic covers from time to time.
Rick really dissed Band-Maid because of excessive compression in mastering which is out of their hands and extremely unfair! I do wish you or someone influential would reach out and have him give the newer songs a listen, and for more than production value. they are magnificent and deserve much better than they received! I am just another old (70) musician who has been transfixed by the talent this band exemplifies. And a proponent of fairness in opinion derivation!
@@denisle13 Rick is all about production on his channel, and is not a fan of over-produced audio. I don't think he totally dissed the band. I follow him a lot, and really learned a lot from him about audio over the years. He is usually right about things like audio processing. Whether something like excessive compression is "out of their (Band Maid's) hands" is debatable. It depends on their recording contract. The Warning negotiated a contract with Lava that gives them relative creative freedom. David Bendeth said that working with them under those terms was quite the experience, because he'd never met young people with such energy and determination. The dynamic among them was difficult, but rewarding. They all learned a lot! And the sound of The Warning got MUCH better, quite quickly, especially live. The jury is still out about Anton DeLost, the producer of their forthcoming album, *Keep Me Fed…* There is an Easter Egg on a single frame of the video of *S!CK* that puts his name on a gravestone.
I am one of many who stopped listening to "new" rock since 2000 because it seemed too preconceived to me, I decided to stay with the consecrated ones of the past, until I heard THE WARNING, these girls returned my love for rock, they have the quality that if you get close to their music you will never be able to leave, also as people they are sweet and here you see me being one of the thousands of overprotective "uncles" of the Villareal sisters.
I love that you included that photo of Band-Maid and The Warning together backstage at the Aftershock Festival! I sure would love to hear them do some collaboration or tour together. Band-Maid is making my favorite music in decades. I'm also impressed with The Warning, and as a old classic rock fan, I especially enjoy the fact that they made a concept album. I'll have to check out Liliac. When talking about the bands' appreciation for their fans, I wish you had mentioned that B-M has recorded three songs (ballads) specifically to express how much they love us, most recently "Memorable". They also have a very endearing way of interacting with each other and the audience while on stage that is able to cut through the language barrier.
The Warning is my favorite band! Since I discovered them in 2020, with the song Dust to Dust, every single day I listen to at least one of their songs. Dany, Pau and Ale are skilled musicians but most important, are incredible people. I feel so great when they do a livestream, or Q&A. You can notice their approaching to fans, and it certainly was a strong factor for my appreciation. When it comes to Rock, I love a good sound, although I always got interested in lyrics, and the girls know how to craft fine lyrics + splendid instrumentals. I ♥️ The Warning 🤘🏼
I was saying in a Band-Maid reaction the other day that I've never felt proud of a band before. Like you said, I feel like they're family. I want them to succeed because beyond the kawaii image, they are legit. They are doing it the right way. It's like discovering Rush, early on. You read my mind in this video! :-)
There is considerable overlap between bandmaid and warning fans. And the bands themselves know and respect each other. When warning and bandmaid met in person for the first time at Aftershock it was really like meeting their big sisters and Miku immediately promised collaboration in Mexico and Japan - which will happen because bandmaid are in charge of their own destiny in most matters.
Bandmaid went out of their way not to show their faces in many of their MVs. I agree with your assessment of the bands as well. BandMaid actually has written songs to their fans as well, their newest song Memorable is dedicated to their nonjapanese fans.
I love and respect Band Maid, and The Warning. Liliac, not so much, as they simply seem to rely on covers too much. Of the three bands Band Maid has the biggest, most impressive, catalog IMO, but The Warning are younger, so that’s not their fault… what they have done so far is amazing. Oh, and so far as egos go, I had heard that members of Liliac put down The Warning??? I am 56, and thought genuine rock was dead. Band Maid was the group that first brought me back to life… and The Warning later added to that feeling.
Hey Dave! Yes, there was a little bit of a controversy between fandoms last week when an old comment Melody said resurfaced, but she clarified the statement and apologized in a live stream and explained it was just a joke to begin with. I thought that took a lot of courage. As for Band Maid, their catalog is indeed impressive! And The Warning continues to blow my mind daily! :)
@@gmantw Not so sure of that there manager is there dad and I've seen quite a few interviews with Liliac and Melody is kinda cocky but Sam and Abigail both are super friendly to everyone couldn't picture them saying stuff like that and I saw the apology seemed to be geniune not sure if many realize how religious (christian) they are, there parents met in the US after immigrating from Romania at a church function.
@@gmantw As a fan of The Warning, I just have to say that this has to stop. It was a silly remark on Melody's part, but that's part of life, and Dany, Pau, and Ale have never given any indication that they were ever bothered by this. It's time for us to put it behind us.
I have followed The Warning for many years now and like their Journey. I followed U2 as from their first single 1979 before they were famous. From a music perspective between the three bands you have picked, The Warning speaks most to me, they are most in my alley. You will have to add Plush soon, an all female rock band from US.
A wonderful analogy x 3. Thank you, Nena. And, to answer your question - "YES", it was 9 years ago when I stumbled upon BAND-MAID. They are responsible for refueling my passion for rock/metal/music in general. I highly respect all three of the bands you highlighted but, my heart belongs to Kanami, Saiki, Akane, MISA and Miku (together and individually) of BAND-MAID. They embody humility backed by ferocious talent and captivating personalities. Again, thank you for this post,
You are very welcome, Lawrence! 9 years, wow! I am a new fan, but so thankful to my subscribers for the recommendation - I think they are insanely talented! Like you said, humility plus talent!
I have seen The Warning nine times now, and have tickets for two upcoming events. Previously, it had been many years since I had attended a rock concert. They have restored my appreciation of rock music, and even how I listen to music, all music, now.
The Warning is on a whole different level, will probably go down as one of the top hof bands ever, their story is like no other anywhere on the planet, The warnings next album drop will set the world on sweet fire, my prediction
Oh, Nena! You are a breath of fresh air. I am an old man that stopped looking for new rock well over 20 years ago until I found Evolve (same as you!) while looking for material for a Social Sciences high school class. I appreciate all three bands, but my deep love is reserved for The Warning because of their lyrics. Seeing them live sealed the deal. I am really interested in seeing how their compositions evolve as they incorporate more mature real-life experiences into their writing process and they become more sophisticated in their musicianship. I am waiting for their 2112 or their Rubber Band. Thank you for your most enjoyable work.
Hey Juan! Thanks for your thoughtful comment! The Warning hit me on all levels. Their lyrics show wisdom beyond their years. I'm so glad you are enjoying the channel! :)
I 100 percent agree. I found the warning on youtube and really liked them. but absolutely fell in love with Band Maid. I leave for my second trip to Japan since xmas in a few weeks. the music scene there is incredible. I will see almost 20 bands in 2 weeks. 95percent female and all rock and metal. the psychology of why Japanese women have turned my music world upside down is interesting to me. my friends dumb it down to a fetish. I do not believe it is. to me the music ranging from pop rock right to metal core with harsh vocals is amazing. I never liked growling vocals before but sure do now from these bands. I listen to this music all day at work so i think it's the music and not just the visuals. I find your videos interesting and informative. keep it up
omg - i found The Warning from Rick Beato's video too!!! And that did lead me also to Band Maid, Lovebites, Baby Metal, and Liliac. For me it's The Warning, they have it all and I'm in constant amazement by their creative outputs. I'll always remember that surreal first hour of diving into The Warning's music!!!
@@psychologyofrock Same here, and they made me find so many other excellent bands because I started to follow reactors that reacted to their songs and started to discuss other bands with other members. For perhaps 30 years I don't think I cared what the name of the bands that I heard on the radio was. I only knew bands from the '70s by name.
I discover The Wanning and Band-Maid the same year (2021) i'm mexican so i first tought that the Villareal sisters would become my favorite, but after checking out the whole discographies of both bands, I couldn't help but fall in love with the complexity, heavy and yet very catchy composition the maids have since "The Unseeen World" album, On the other hand I do enjoy solid and refined Hard Rock like the "Error" album, especially considering that The Warning are "just" a tri-pieces band, I'm not saying that the Villareal sistera can't write more complex songs, "Queen of the Murder Scene" is a solid proof of that, it is my personal preference for what this two bands offer nowdays. Also the charisma and dinamic between their members in both bands are very funny to follow on and out satge, is very obvious that they are sisters, one for blood, the other for been stuck together for 10 years. I truly believe thatt The Warning will have a major growth in the years to come, they are 10 years younger, the majority of his songs are written in full English, have an "american" record label, and they have only 3 full albums released and that is a awesome thing, as a rock fan i couldn't be more happy for discovered both bands and be more enthusiastic about what will they deliverer in the future 🤟🏼
I'm old. I've loved rock/metal, and music in general, all my life. No band has ever grabbed my heart and my checkbook like Band-Maid has. And I'm not some creeper otaku; if I closed my eyes I would have the same opinion. They are brilliantly creative musicians and their music just speaks to me. But their delightful personalities, and the mutual love and respect between them and their fans put them over the top. I know maybe 5 words of Japanese, but for me language is no barrier at all. Band-Maid absolutely went the extra mile during the pandemic by continuing to connect with fans, give online concerts, new releases etc. As another commenter said, I just feel so proud of them as human beings. And the added bonus is the fanbase: apart from the very few bad apples common to any fandom, the Madiacs are the coolest and most welcoming group I've ever been associated with, some of whom I'm now proud to call friends. I also like the Warning a lot, and probably need to circle back to Liliac, but so far they have not grabbed me the same way.
There is nothing wrong with liking things that happen to be Japanese. I think there is a lot of bigotry towards Japan. Especially online. Anyone who says that to my face comes to regret it. This guy at work mocked me for liking Babymetal. Oh you have an opinion? I talked to him about Babymetal until he wanted to die. He thought I'd be afraid of him because he was 350 pounds. I'd kick his ass if it came to that.
Hey Nena! Awesome analysis as always!! Love to hear your take on all things Rock!! I like all three of these bands. I am a MASSIVE fan of The Warning, to the pint I will probably be seeing them 6 or 7 times in the span of a year and a half!! I will also be seeing Band-Maid for the first time in May and I am So EXCITED. Liliac is a great band and those kids are extremely talented! It seems like they have still been trying to find their own sound, and I look forward to their new album coming out! Finding The Warning in late 2018 gave me hope for a great new generation of Rock! I had not listened to new music in decades because it all sounded so stale and commercially produced, with feeling, passion or soul. I grew up through the 70s and 80s and miss all that great music! The Warning gave me hope and also opened me up the amazing fanbase! Other Warning fans introduced me to Band-Maid, Liliac, and all the amazing new Japanese bands! Even Indian and Indonesian bands like Bloodywood and Voice of Baceprot! I am now inspired by new Rock and it has made a difference in my life for the better. Thanks again, Nena! Rock On!!
Hey Tom! 7 Times for The Warning? I am so jealous! ;) Like you, these bands re-inspired me to find new artists, and it has been a wonderful journey discovering what is out there. I recently found Voice of Baceprot and think they are fantastic! Thanks for your comment!
I'm here for The Warning, I'm sorry, cover band is not my cup of tea, that's the main reason I didn't follow TW in 2015 , because back then I thought it's was just another cover band, until I saw them again in 2019 doing their own material, blew my mind and become a fan
I think The Warning was doing covers mainly before they were really a "band" - it helped them to learn how to play and showcase to relatives their progress. I agree that their original music far outshines any covers because they are truly such gifted songwriters. One in a million!
@@jonathanwatson5818 The warning made their first EP since 2015 but they were little known and many did not find out, only some gave them the opportunity to listen to their music and they liked it and stayed, in 2017 they released their first album and in 2018 they released their second album being this conceptual all long before 2019 and would have made an error since 2020 but the pandemic was crossed causing it to be postponed
I'm a happy member of all three fan groups! Each band brings something special and have reignited my interest in music! My order of discovery was Band-Maid, Liliac, then The Warning.
I'm a Band-Maid fan first, but also love The Warning (btw, they are also friends who met each other for the first time at Aftershock '22). I think there are different reasons why people are bigger fans of one band over another. Speaking for myself, the criteria come down to song quality, strength of melodic hooks and riffs, but also a more complex layering that gives your brain a workout as well as your heart. Perfect accessibility of lyrics, personalities, dress, etc. are secondary. Kanami Tono is a genius songwriter, and if the members of Band-Maid were all men (or toddlers or cats), if the lead guitarist had the songwriting skills of Kanami, I'd still have all their records.
The Warning nos une. The Warning for ever.
I've been following The Warning since they were just young kids. Listening to their Metallica cover a few years back just blew me away. Hearing them now with all their songs that they write just makes me appreciate them more. I have been warned!!!
I totally agree with your assessment of why folks are so loyal to these bands. I myself had quit listening to popular music decades ago and had been listening to mostly classical music. But about 3 yrs ago stumbled across The Warning by accident and became hooked. As for the musical differences I can't say because I have not listened to the other two bands, or even any other pop or rock. Still listen to a lot of classical music, but almost every day get a hankering for some The Warning.
Hi Nena. I'm a Maidiac thru & thru but all 3 are great. I loved your breakdown of the commonalities between each band rather than a versus comparison. There are channels that do "Who are better" reactions knowing it causes controversy in the comments. There's plenty of great music to go round for everyone.😁👍
Thank, Gary! Music is subjective, and I am all for people coming back to rock music. I have no interest to criticize rock musicians on this channel, especially female artists! We all have our favorites, but everyone has the right to decide for themselves who they personally like best :) I thought it was interesting, however, to discuss some of the commonalities.
@@psychologyofrock Thx Nena.👍I wish more reactors would create content as intelligent & good as this. I've subbed now, i'm sorry i hadn't found your channel before :)
Why do The Warning stand out to me? How much time do you have? 😂 Well, they scratch every itch for me from an art perspective. First, lyrically. I come from an artistic family, but got none of the visual arts or musical talent that runs through my relatives. I do seem to have the ability to express myself through the written word though, and Pau’s lyrics have always struck a chord with me. Whether it is her story telling, or her ability to question the narrative status quo, she has my undivided attention. She has the ability to thrill me like Poe, make me think like Shakespeare and spin a tale like Hank Williams. Second, their compositional skills are second to none. I have not seen a group of siblings that are capable of such arrangements and original melodic storytelling since the Brothers Gibb in the 1970s. The three of them are magical composers (perhaps due to their very early training in classical music). The way they harmonize their instruments, as well as their vocals adds weight and grounds their songs. Their music is simply entrancing. Third, their moral character is to this point, beyond reproach. By the way, I am not saying the other two bands lack moral character. All of us are human, and will at times fail in our interactions with each other. Dany, Pau and Ale have a singular minded focus when it comes to dealing with others. They are kind to a fault. They NEVER speak ill of people people they have worked with, or spent time with (even those ass hats at Sphere Studios, may they burn in hell!). They find the good in others, and in every situation and are always looking to uplift those around them. This philosophy is so engrained in them, that when public adversity finds them, the reaction has always been “a smile, a laugh and a nod at the situation”. I have never seen them roll their eyes at an inane question. They have not stormed off stage or out of a gig because the situation was less than ideal. They have not blamed a roadie or a venue for equipment failures. They are the embodiment of the Golden Rule, they also just so happen to be world class musicians. 🤘🏻❤️⚠️
Very well said, Roy! They are one in a million. So happy to have found them and think it is incredible how much they are bringing people back to rock music. And YES they are wold class musicians and wonderful people as well!
@@Nxort the band tried recording QOTMS there, but were treated very dismissively by the producers. It was so bad the entire recordings and time there had to be thrown away. The band has never publicly criticized the studio. They did release some behind the scenes videos to Patreon backers.
@@roywall8169 Oh I didn't know! 😯 What a lack of professionalism, and what a terrible record, particularly if you treated badly a band that may become very famous in time! 🤦♂️ In a short time they will regret their actions! 😒
I agree with almost everything you said. I'm a solid Madiac but have been getting more into The Warning lately, too. I see videos of Liliac all the time, but I haven't given them a shot yet. Probably something I need to do soon.
Check them out! They have some great covers, and I'm expecting their new album will showcase a lot of growth as songwriters. Excited to see how it sounds!
Fair Points all the way around. Nice analysis 🤘. My dream concert would be a The Warning/ Band-Maid show. They're just so good live. And, they are fans of each other. 🤘⚡🐦
Big fan of both Band-Maid and The Warning. One group is highly technical. The other great songwriters and tight as hell live. I would als add Lovebites to your list. Another spectacular group.
I really love all 3 of these bands. Band-Maid has been my favorite since I discovered them 3 years ago, and now that I've seen them live, they will always hold that place in my heart and mind. I have also followed Liliac since the days of their free live performances on the Santa Monica Pier in Cali, and they are also awesome. As far as The Warning, they have only been on my radar for a little over a year, but they also are very talented and put put great music.
My number 1 band is Band Maid and number 2 is The Warning. I haven't listened to rock music in years, except for the radio. I personally am tired of all the old bands from the 70's and 80's. Needed something new. Band Maid's outfits are from Miku a "contrast" I believe she means that you see a maid or Jpop looking band and hear hard rock. You noted that in your analysis. The Warning are just "that damn good", I've seen then twice now and loved every minute. I would go see either of them in a heartbeat. Band Maid a little tougher to get to. The Warning are one of the few bands to put out a theme album, like Rush and The Who. Queen of the Murder scene is extremely good, especially for the age they were when they wrote it. I am devoted to both band and can't wait for their future music.
I grew up in the late 60's , and through the 70"s with all the great rock and Blues bands, I still love them all. About five years ago I was searching you tube for bands, and music that I had never heard before,{I still do}. What I found by searching for covers of songs that I loved from earlier days, was both Liliac, and The Warning. I like Liliac, but love The Warning! To confirm that they are really legit I was finally able to see them at a small club in Phoenix. Their show was everything that I expected after watching so many videos. I am sold! I must rank them in every way with "the greats". I want you to know that your channel is also something I have been looking for. A fresh perspective as far as reacting to music. Thank you.
I look forward to the day The Warning and Band Maid share the same stage ! Two acts with that much class are destined to collaborate . They aren't interested in one-upmanship...just great music for their loving and grateful fans.
Nena, you have an amazing gift to clearly articulate what many of us think about one or all of theses bands in a way a lot of us struggle to put into words. As a die hard The Warning fan, everything you’ve done on them reflects my thoughts in a concise intelligent manner. Hope to run into you at a live show one day!
There is one thing seldom brought up about these bands. They appeal to older fans as you mentioned, and, co-incidentally or not, those are the fans with the most disposable income. When I was younger, I couldn't afford the "deluxe" versions of music, but now I find myself getting the CD with the Blue-ray version with a photobook or whatever comes alongside. Whatever though, I along with countless others have a newly revived joy for new music because of these bands, and I didn't see it coming at all. Only three or so years ago, I didn't know Japanese rock, and now have a small shrine to it almost. Band-Maid, Asterism, Nemophila, Gacharic Spin, Ningen Isu, on and on....
Yes, it is a fact not always discussed, but true! And we also deeply appreciate bands of this quality coming back! The real rock experience was missed!
I can’t speak to the age of the Liliac and Band -aid fans. But for The Warning, it’s certainly true that they appeal to and “old rocker” fan base in Canada and the US, although I think their appeal is expanding amongst the younger generations too. In Mexico and Latin America however, their fan base appears younger. Just watch their concert footage from CDMX and Lima. In interviews they have commented on this a few times.
Out of the three, my favorite is The Warning. I’ve listened to Liliac and Band Maid; their music just doesn’t grab me the same way TW does. I’m 58 years old and I haven’t been this excited about music in decades. Consider me one of the many protective uncles of The Warning.
Excellent analysis. I am one of the old guard with The Warning and have supported them through Patreon and Kickstarter and truly did watch them grow up in real time. They are amazingly humble, charming to meet (I teased Pau so much once that she screamed) , and it is a thrilling experience to see a world-class band onstage at full throttle when you are close enough to reach out and touch Dany's or Ale's mic stand. Or to get my hand out of the way before Dany stepped on it, once. I have a clip on my channel called "Are The Warning Fans Crazy?" where Pau says venues commonly ask them "What is *UP* with your fans?!".
I'm old. Like most of the USA, I was watching The Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan; the world really did change the very next day. I've seen The Doors, I've seen Led Zeppelin, heck I've seen Creedence. I was even standing 10 feet away when then-unknown Linda Ronstadt made her debut on a cheesy afternoon teen dance TV show. I had given up on any modern musicians. TW's fans in the USA tend to skew older than other parts of the world, IMO that is why. Pau's lyrics are deep; Paul Simon and John Lennon deep.
While they did not "refuel my passion", The Warning did captivate me because of their abilities and enthusiasm. The fact they all started so young and are still developing their skills. They are also so socially accessible and their Patreon following is almost a family, this closeness is nurtured by the band members themselves, as they will call out those not maintaining the family atmosphere. This same "family atmosphere" carries over to their live shows, it's like going to a club with your friends. As a drummer, I am particularly drawn to Pau. Her energy, musical abilities and song writing just emphasize her talents. I also like the fact they have written so much of their own music. Strongly agree with your comments about the strength of their song writing ability. I also agree with Arejay Hale when he said "We love these girls"! 🥁🎶
I have seen all 3 of these bands live. The Warning were my favorite as they are so incredibly tight live. They also have great stage presence and the best songs in my opinion. Bandmaid is spellbinding. Near virtuoso level playing. And great fans. Saw both at Aftershock and in LA too. I had fun seeing Liliac. It was at a small venue and so I got really close.
As you mentioned I don't think nostalgia can be underestimated in why all these bands have a loyal following. All of these bands have been around for a time. Band Maid are on a ten year tour this year. All the bands have evolved over the years but all of them manage to have music that appeals to old rock fans and new ones. All the bands have a special relationship with fans. The fans seem to be protective. None more than The Maidiacs who will try and spread the word of true rock music and support Japans other bands as well as liking The Warning and any good rock band. Yes Music used to mean fun as well as depth and being moved. These bands provide that when mainstream music has forgotten how to.
Band maid fan here.. but have deep appreciation for the warning. Aside from the factors you mentioned, i think im rooting for them because of where they came from. I have absolutely nothing against US or UK artists but the seemingly "underdog" origins play a small factor here (probably why im not familiar with liliac). Growing up.. it was almost unimaginable for bands from other regions to get worldwide recognition (there were a few exceptions). It's "inspiring" that artists like bandmaid, the warning, the hu, bloodywood, vob and those from "other" european countries like sabaton and nightwish are being heard and loved outside their countries.
I'd drifted away from rock and metal, and was listening to more folk and classical, until I heard Liliac's cover of "The Last in Line". That led me to reaction videos and, within weeks, Band-Maid. Then I accidently clicked on a video by The Warning, thinking it was the Band-Maid song "Warning!". So they are linked for me personally even though they are musically very different. I think there's a nostalgic sound in each of these bands, which connected with many people who "thought that rock was dead". They each started by proving that they can do classic rock as well as anyone. Of course, Band-Maid's later albums don't sound at all nostalgic. It's actually the innovative and diverse songwriting, even more than the outstanding musicianship, that makes them my favourite band. The members of Liliac and The Warning are much younger, and I'm really looking forward to them evolving into innovators, even though (as with Band-Maid) there will be parts of both fan-bases who won't like it when it happens.
Yes, I think these three bands really have revived a passion for rock in many people! I agree that the 3 are VERY different, but share some notable commonalties that have led to some serious (and well deserved) fan devotion. Great that you enjoy all of them!
Love The Warning and Band Maid. Liliac is talented but I have a hard time following them after seeing a few of their videos and posts putting down other bands. It was a few years ago and I hope their attitudes has changed.
Hey Kirby! Love them also! As for Liliac, Melody recently clarified her statement and apologized in a live stream saying that it had just been in jest and that she didn't mean it. I thought that was very admirable!
@psychologyofrock It was a few years ago and it was more than 1 band that they committed about. Some people have said that they have grown since then and I hope it's true because they are talented.
@rs8461 Like I said it was a few years ago and people have said that they have grown since then and I hope it's true because they are talented. I used to follow them but have not been to any of their sites for a few years.
@@kirbysmith882 Who are these other bands they supposedly put down? I follow them religiously all over the internet and I haven't heard of anything other than The Warning incident. Which wasn't really a put down either. Bands open for other bands all the time, you know this.
I’m with you in that I’d checked out on new music sometime in the 90s when the last decent alternative rock station went off the air. Not only did The Warning get me interested in a new artist for the first time in years, but without them I probably never would’ve heard about Halestorm or Muse, among others. I’d also like to note that The Warning’s parents, Luis and Mony, also play a big behind-the-scenes role in the band’s career, giving up their careers to focus on their daughters’ musical ambitions.
The big difference between the warning and Lilliac is enter sandman as you say. The warning are creative musical artist's. Lilliac to much into the cliches of rock and the nostalgic in my opinion. The warning is my favorite by far. Nice take on the similarities and difference between the 3 bands
Agree and think the release of the new album is going to change everything for them! Although, I certainly appreciate their covers, and that’s what drew me to them! ♥️🤘🏻
I'm 71 and had been lost in the past ( Zep, DPurple, all classic rock really ) had no clue Band Maid existed until last year. I do like Warning, no idea of Liliac. But Band Maid is beyond special- reasons: - their catalog has grown fast, they are very prolific. I even love the songs they didn't write themselves early on, because they arranged and played them so well. All the new stuff, however, is so excellent, the compositions are layered, complex, many unusual, ergo the listener has a wide range to listen to. Which brings up point 2..Lot to be said for diversity of style, sound to keep things interesting especially in concert - they all are masters, er, mistresses of their instruments and all shine individually but mesh together as a band like few others. And the solos etc never disrupt, they are always integral to the song, and the solos are subtley supported by the other instruments. - they really seem to enjoy each other, playing live, and they adore their fans like no other. - So, their concerts are way fun cuz they have fun; no rockstar BS, posturing, starting late, showing up drunk or stoned, sloppy live playing ( yeah Jimmy/Zep I'm looking at you ) - They play rock, hard rock, metal, speed metal ( Black HOLe!!!! ), prog, acoustic, jazz, and pop sometimes many forms within one song. - THERE IS NO ONE LIKE THEM , NO ONE and they brought an old white man to life from across the big pond. Thats the main reason right there Enjoy your journey
Checkout Liliac the lead singer is a big Fan of Ronnie James Dio as an older Fan I love the fact they honor the bands of the past while making New music of there own
I love The Warning and absolutely adore Band-Maid. (Haven't listened to Liliac, but I'll give them a try after this.) Seeing The Warning grow up from tiny girls who can barely hold their instruments makes you want to root for them - you get to see them develop and progress into excellent musicians and you just can't help but cheer them on and hope they achieve greater and greater success. There's a similar dynamic with Miku from Band-Maid, who didn't even know how to play guitar when she started the band... as you watch over the years you get to see her develop and improve her abilities and you end up cheering her on, too. You feel like they are part of your own family (those darn para-social relationships) and root for them to succeed as you would any of your own friends or family. Of course it helps that they all come across as genuinely nice people. I'm sure if they were jerks, their respective fandoms would be smaller and less enthusiastic.
As far as favorites, number one, for me, is Band-Maid. Second would be The Warning. Third would be Liliac. I like Band-Maid most cause of the complexity and technical aspects of their songs! The Warning has a bit more basic rock sound, but their lyrics are always very deep and meaningful. Liliac has gotten a little heavy in their originals for my taste, but love their covers are fantastic. My two cents worth.
I love how heavy Liliac is becoming but then I come from the Deathcore/Metalcore side of things. However, I grew up listening to Metallica, Megadeth, Dio, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Liliac's covers of those bands are 🔥
Thanks for expressing that so clearly, I for one agreen with everything you said about The Warnig and Bandmaid, Liliac is new to me thus is hard to agree with something you are not familiar. I have been a following The Warning since they were recording their second Album (Queen of the Murder Scene) that was released on Nov 2018. I started following BandMaid since about the 2020 when everyone was looking for something fun to watch. I had heard of Liliac, but had not listened to them until this video. I hope you can excuse me but I had leave 2/3 into your video to watch a few of their videos, and I'm glad I did, they sound really good and I'll key an eye out for them. I think a lot of us old rockers and metal heads had given up on NEW music and these band have revived our passion, personally my most played playlists are mainly comprised of songs from The Warning, Bandmaid with a sprinkling of my faves from the past 20+ years.
I love the way you do your analysis, respectful and very eloquently (I'm not very fluent in English, so I guess that helps me get your points better). So thank you for your effort in putting this in our hands. To be honest, I haven't heard much of Band-Maid or Liliac, but I'll certainly give them a deeper look and try. I just love TW and haven't had "time" to look around, the more that I see and hear from them, the more I find other details that make me appreciate them even more. This may be out of context here, and it's not even something I know about well or practice, but it always comes to my mind while I see the connection TW have not only with their fans, but to the people around them in general. So having said that, I believe that these young women possess a higher level of consciousness, like something innately attached to them, than even themselves may not be aware of that. You know?.. Apart from their talent and music, there is something else in the way they are, they act and express themselves, that is very rarely seen, something that is hard to put a word on, but definitely something very brilliant around them doing its magic. As manifested here by some people in their comments and in other places as well, people notice that in their own way but pretty well aligned with most. This is just an idea of mine and how I see and perceive some experiences. For me their music which I completely enjoy a lot all the way around, it is also a vehicle for them to show me at least, how to be a better person myself, and for that alone I do appreciate having them crossed my way just a year ago. Thanks again for your analysis and hope you have a great day! Looking forward for your next one. Tks!
Interesting reaction, Nena. I like Band-Maid and Liliac okay, and I respect them, but they don't melt my butter like The Warning does. I think you covered the main reasons why I like them so much: musical proficiency, writing ability, showmanship, and devotion to their fan base. And truth be told, the fact they are gorgeous doesn't hurt one bit. The heart wants what it wants -- simple as that. 😍
I've listened to a few songs from each of these bands. The only one that I follow is The Warning. Don't get me wrong, all three bands have incredible talent! I'm just not a fan of growling lyrics (sorry Liliac) and I don't understand Japanese (sorry Band-Maid). For me, The Warning checks all the boxes. What's most impressive is their songwriting ability, especially considering how old they were when they put out an EP of original songs. Those songs were originally an assignment from one of their music teachers to introduce them to music writing. They ended up following the whole process all the way through to studio recording, and IMO, what they put out rivals what some of the current bands have produced with help from external songwriters! Lyrics, harmonies, bass lines, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drum lines, and keyboard lines all written and arranged by 3 sisters before the oldest was 16! How many 9 year old bass players do you know of that can write bass lines that are album worthy? Now that they are older (bass player recently turned 18, middle sister on drums is 21, oldest sister on guitar is 23) their music is even better! And they're still learning and honing their abilities! I love the music that they have out now, and I can't wait to see how they progress, and what they will release in the future! Long live The Warning!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️🔥🔥🔥
I agree that all three are incredibly talented, and everyone has their own taste! I think it is awesome how these bands have brought people back to rock. Fantastic to see!
Madiac here. Been following for years and love to see them perform live and reach the top of their craft. I just love the 2nd Warning album. But this last album feels flat to me--although their live performances are spectacular. Liliac does some strong covers. But their original music sounds dated and hasn't caught me yet. Great vid. Appreciate your support of upcoming musicians
Hey Martin! I love the album Error but I can't wait for their new music that they are working on now - they blow me away! As for Liliac, I'm expecting their upcoming album to showcase a lot of growth in songwriting. I look forward to hearing it!
I can only speak from my own life time of rock starting in the 1960s, I've experienced the absolute best if the best, then came the dark time's where there was a musical desert where rock and metal were almost dead, then I discovered Band-Maid in 2016, I was so excited by what I heard, after 20 year's in the desert there was an oasis, because of Band-Maid I have discovered so many band's the Warning included that I will never thirst for rock/metal for the rest of my existence, Band-Maid is now and will remain my favorite all time favorite band for more reasons I care to list and I will continue to support all of these band's.
The 3 bands have positive and remarkable qualities! 👍 The best thing is to promote camaraderie and mutual support among all the new bands and their fandoms, so these and all those that come after, keep the flame of rock alive.🤘
de acuerdo, cada banda tiene algo positivo que plasmar en su música, las tres bandas son talentosas, y lejos de formar envidias y criticas debemos agradecer que estos artistas están surgiendo en estos terribles tiempos para la música en general.
TWA, Dany Battalion (well, barely) here. Their story obviously is remarkable, but their music and who they are as people is really what does it. As you say, they don't rely on anything on stage but their music and their energy as people. To the point about not using off-color language on stage: I'm not a prude and have no objection per se, but I've seen some bands seemingly go out of their way to swear on stage, to all appearances (to me, at any rate) to demonstrate how tough and nasty they are. Dany, Pau, and Ale aren't trying to demonstrate any toughness on stage or otherwise compete with anyone else (or with each other), and don't resort to that. Their lyrics, likewise, are hard and incisive, but never cross over to the ugly. One thing I've noticed about TWA, there are a lot of musicians amongst us. Some of them have played significant part in the band's development.
I really liked your analysis. I think the fandoms of these bands are so passionate about them it's not only because they play the music they like and for being so likeable as a whole (personalities, connection with the fans, etc), I think there's a strong believe that these bands are "saving" rock, so fans are so enthusiast to share and talk about them to many people as possible, I think that's why we want them to succeed. I'm personally a huge fan of BAND-MAID, when I knew about them, they were just what I was looking for and they just clicked on me like no other band in recent years, although I'm always searching and supporting new bands. They strongly reminded me to one of my all time favorite bands, SIAM SHADE. I'm really happy for their success, seeing them grow and getting bigger and bigger every time it's so awesome. I've listening to japanese rock bands since 1998 and although I always have thought that there's have been a lot of great bands in Japan, people in the west just ignored them and they simply weren't part of the conversation about the direction of rock history. But, in these days, things are really changing and I'm really happy that BAND-MAID is leaving a mark on that without sacrificing their nature, people like them just the way they are. Hope that these bands become bigger in the future, we need them to headline festivals and being part in the podium of rock history.
I know all three bands and in my case The Warning are number one, Liliac is 1 b and Band Maid 1c. They are extremely talented, but actually play different kind of music. While TW makes me feel happy and invigorated, I feel power and a little melancholy when I hear Liliac. Band Maid are talented and deliver good rock of high quality and are fun to look at because they are so energetic. You can´t compare them when it comes to the style in rock that they represent. They are all top notch but different.
I like all 3 of them. Liliac i found because they made a cover of Ozzy's "Crazy Train" they are really talented, and the singer is blowing me away every time. Their music don't quite fall in my personal taste, but its rock solid nontheless. Now Band-Maid? I discovered BM because of Herman Li from DragonfForce "auditioning" for them. They had been shown as suggestion in my feed for quite a while, but the maid outfit steered me away from ever clicking. Which i have regrettet many times since. It was just a "WTF just happend to my senses??" moment. So much going on. I'm convinced they aim to kill people by overstimulating our senses. The amount of talent in that band is unrivaled in the world today. And just like you it got me to discover the j-rock/metal scene, which is simply just amazing. They are a true liveband. They FEED of the crowd. Watch some of their live videos with crowd, and watch the ones without due to covid lockdowns. Thats 2 completely different bands. The Warning i discovered because of BM. Of the 3? They are the ones i never get tired of listening to. Its just plain good solid rock. And their lyrics are top notch. Been many years since something that pure and "simple" has been around.
I probably mentioned this on your breakdown of Band-Maid the first time. I found the ladies about three years ago during the plandemic. I also thought rock was dead. Boy was I mistaken. As others have mentioned, they are fresh and familiar at the same time. Kanami's song writing is just next level imho. Miku's lyrics are incredibly deep even if you don't understand Japanese ( I don't) THe Warning is also in this same vein although the song structures are simpler because of being a three piece band, no refection on their talent. The drummer Pau is also an incredible lyricist as well as being an insanely talented drummer. I hope we have many more years for all of these ladies to record and improve. Thank you for sharing this analysis.
Great analysis! I am a huge fan of The Warning and have never heard of these other bands, except that The Warning just announced they are going to Japan this summer and playing with Band Maid. *Now I'll have to check them out, along with Liliac.* What drew me into The Warning rabbit hole was their unbelievable lyrical sensibilities, combined with their musicianship at such an early age. I bought all their CDs, ripped them to my Mac and iPhone, and put them on repeat in the car. I've watched every concert video on their channel (As an audio geek and a respecter of copy rights, I avoid most fan videos from smartphones.) Of course, they're easier on the eyes than bands like the present day Rolling Stones, too, so that doesn't hurt! But most of the time, they don't rely on looks for views. They don't have to. Their skills are off the charts! I grew up with The Beatles, Stones, Dylan, CSN and sometimes Y, Byrds, Joni Mitchell, all the Woodstock bands, all the Laurel Canyon bands, all the British Invasion bands, Rod Stewart and Faces, Jethro Tull, Chuck Berry, Allman Brothers, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Aerosmith and Boston, Van Halen, David Bowie, Elton John, Blondie and Pat Benatar, the prog rock crowd of Yes, King Crimson, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Nectar, Rush, etc. I also listen to jazz and classical, blues and bluegrass, folk and trance. *The Warning are right at home in that mix.* They belong on the same plane as any of the greats I've heard.
I love Band Maid because they put the work in. One year they performed 104 shows. They brought back my love for rock. They always look like their having fun. Their stage presence and interactions on stage. Their intricate song composition . They let every member shine. The unbelievable musical talent of each member and how they blend those talents together. And finally … the love the show their fans. The only band I know of who write love songs to their fans. At least two I know of, Memorable and About Us.
Thank you for your excellent analysis of these three truly outstanding bands. Music is a universal language and those who love Rock can certainly understand the love and passion that their fans exhibit towards their favorite bands. Having had the good fortune of discovering Band-Maid 7 years ago and watching their fantastic musical evolution to the present day, I understand how emotionally invested one becomes in following their musical careers. The fact that they are all genuinely good and decent people, as you pointed out, makes them quite endearing to their fans. In a way, their success is our success and affirms our devotion to these bands. We wish nothing but the best for our Rock stars and desire very much that many new fans flock to them to hear their wonderful music and accompany us in our musical journey with some of the best Rock bands on the planet.
I'll start by saying that it was Band-Maid who had revived my hope for rock music again. I am a male rock fan, and I've also got to confess that I originally dismissed Band-Maid recommendations to listen to them due to my initial, negative bias of their imagery back in 2017. But several months after that, I relented and gave them an honest listen, and their music blew me away. The language barrier was non-existent to me, and language is still no barrier for my enjoyment of their music. It was all about the music for me. The updated rock sound that Band-Maid had in their music was what kept me listening to them. Now after 5 years of listening to their music and learning more about their creative process, I care less and less about their outfits and have grown more appreciative of their writing. I feel really bad now that I'd originally dismissed them. My respect for them as writers and musicians is now reaffirmed with each new album. Learning about their beginnings you start to realize how Band-Maid, like the others, have paid their dues. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say it really comes down to their craftsmanship for a really well written rock song backed up with the musicianship to execute.
I too negatively assessed the costumes before actually listening and assumed they were a gimmick band. Boy, was I wrong! A great lesson to give music a chance even when external factors might lead you to believe you may not like it! Band Mail is the REAL DEAL!
Bandmaid have recently only played one cover and that was in reaction to the extreme disappointment of a major gig being cancelled by covid. They posted a masterful cover of slipknot just because they could. Shared a stage with slipknot last weekend
It was more of a snippet (90 seconds or so) than a cover, but they actually do have one legit cover under their belt. It's a song called Honey by the group MUCC.
