Vegeta’s character arc is one of the greatest I’ve ever seen in all of motion pictures. His past that we see flashbacks of that show why he is the way he is. His youthful arrogance being humbled by his first fight with Goku displayed, at first, disbelief that a lower class could ever be in the same realm as his, relative, elite status in the universe. He quickly realizes that he too can overcome his superiors (Zarbon, Dodoria, the Ginyu’s, Frieza). Then on earth learning to love someone other than himself when Trunks was killed by cell, then him becoming fairly domesticated by Bulma, then even developing a friendship with Goku from being a zero sum relationship where he has to be stronger than Goku to just wanting to consistently get better like the way of the Turtle Hermit. All the while exhibiting being very sharp intelectually in more ways than just fighting. To the point where he’s actually a pretty solid dad because of his loyalty to Bulma. Vegeta is one of my favorite characters ever and Chris Sabbat always delivered in his portrayal of the character. Especially once they redubbed him in Kai.

One cool thing is Whis teaches them from where they can understand it the most. He speaks to Vegeta as this is a direct path to his pride and arrogance emotionally. While with Goku, because talking to him has a good chance of going over his head instead Whis emphasizes his weakness physically

I’ve seen some people say that Goku’s issues with overconfidence weren’t a thing before Super, but that’s not really true. An example of him acting that way in Z would be his fight against Frieza. He tried to just leave in the middle of fight because, in his own words, there’s no point in fighting anymore because he already won. He’s also been overconfident in others before, like with Gohan in the Cell saga and with Goten & Trunks in the Buu saga.

This is why ultra ego is so perfect for vegeta sadly in the manga he couldnt fully master it 1. Cause its his frist time 2. He isnt the same way as he was in namek or when he got let himself get mind control just to fight goku again and not care about anyone but now he has kids and family

Which is why they complement each other so well; Vegeta is the one who should go first, taking care of most of the trouble and only sending in Goku if things get too much out of hand. Vegeta then can take some much needed rest, and WHEN Goku messes up the prince can tag in again to secure victory.

Even deeper is how UE makes Vegeta work on the weaknesses that Whis pointed out to him, UE makes Vegeta cut loose and just enjoy the battle without always having a specific reason why (no chip on his shoulder) which helps him unleash his full potential as a fighter and MUI works on Goku’s weaknesses also such as making Goku more focused and careful instead of being too care free (automatic dodging and analyzing the situation and his opponent more effectively and earlier in the fight as well instead of “warming” up then saying “now i’m serious” later on in the fight as he usually does and also it helps him take his opponents serious from the start and not let them get stronger and then they end up surpassing Goku and now he’s in a worse situation then before, it also helps him not focus on his physical strength but more so his awareness, battle discernment, and his techniques

Was rereading Dragonball and was surprised to see how many times Goku let’s his guard down. Most of it can be chalked up to him just being way too trusting as a child but the big one for me that stood out was dropping his guard when he thought Piccolo Jr. was defeated and getting a hole blasted through him bc of it.

As an educator working towards a masters to be a principal this is actually a good lesson for teachers (minus the hitting the student part). A good teacher knows the weaknesses of their students as well as their strengths. A good teacher challenges students to hone their strengths and work on their weaknesses. Whis is a good teacher.

The subtlety here is what makes anime good. He cheap shots Vegeta's ego by announcing his the lesser. Then, physically cheap shots Goku as he is gloating. Both took hits but in a way that hurts them individually most. Not just a narration of what we are to know. Showing us.

Vegeta deserves more than what the creator gave him. He's worked very hard and come so far and still gets side slapped by every villain till Goku somehow saves the day

I love that the writers of super clearly misunderstand these two characters, there’s a clearly defined reason why vegeta will always be a step behind and it isn’t this it’s about their philosophies Vegeta always wants to be the strongest so whenever he becomes the strongest it limits him and he can never go beyond that and so another character will quickly overtake him Goku on the other hand doesn’t want to be the strongest he just wants to become stronger so there is never a limit to how strong he can get he will just keep getting stronger and stronger

And best thing is that Vegeta has been able to learn from that lesson especially inside of dbs superhero

The "overconfidence" scene is so infamous. They should've said "you're too naive during fights" or something, as that's more realistic.

Even tho it’s whis he had to personally and physically show him just why bring to relax can catch you off guard, so this was a example of that! Words don’t do justice.
