Welcome to my book review of The Waste Lands by Stephen King! In this video, we'll dive into the third installment of the legendary Dark Tower series, which follows the gunslinger Roland Deschain and his companions on their epic quest to find the mythical Dark Tower.
The Waste Lands takes us on a thrilling ride through Mid-World, where Roland, Eddie, and Susannah must navigate the desolate wastelands, treacherous cities, and monstrous foes that stand in their way. With Stephen King's trademark blend of horror, fantasy, and western elements, this novel is a masterful example of genre-bending storytelling. Did you know that King started writing The Dark Tower series in 1970, and it took him more than 30 years to complete the entire saga?
In this video, I'll be providing ratings on plot, characters, setting, originality, and giving an overall rating out of 5 stars. The first part of the review will be spoiler-free, so if you haven't read the book, you can still enjoy the discussion. You had me in hysterics with your commentary about the ending of this book. Reading the DT is fun because I know your video will be there to watch after, haha. Still only giving three stars to these but everybody's praise of Wizard and Glass has me eager to push on for at least one more.

i loved the ending so much. It gives a feeling of true uncertainty, which reflects the emotions of the characters.

I loved the ending. It was not like reading a book. It was like a movie, so fast paced, so well written. The cliff hanger was absolutely absurd but that's why I loved it!

Had I read the books at the time, then I would have been raging at that ending. Thankfully I read the books back to back last year, so it didn't really bother me. This is my 3rd favourite of the main canon after Book 7 (my 3rd fave SK book of all time), and Book 2.

I actually liked the ending. I love the whole series. I'm not easily pleased but for me Stephen Kings's bad endings are better than many authors great endings. I read it all when it was a complete series, so didn't have to wait. I can see how it might irk some people.

Hey, that's awesome to hear you loved the ending and the whole series! Reading it all in one go must've been an epic journey. I totally get what you're saying about King's "bad" endings. Even when they're polarizing, they're still memorable and make you think, which is more than can be said for a lot of other stories out there.

Awesome video, love the energy and enthusiasm. This is definitely my favorite in The Dark Tower series. Blaine the pain, oh man! Luckily I had the next book lined up or I would have been incredibly frustrated with that ending.

I did spend years reading, 4 not 6, but damn it sucked. I thought about what read going to happen everyday. How would they manage. Also, this is where the idea of ka-tet was introduced. Fantastic! Then when I saw the name of the first book I got excited. I was like, he won't and then when the first obstacle was introduced I thought ok he isn't but the past sets dilemma. Then the second part of the first book kicked off and bam, he is and it makes logical sense. Then the climax of book one was amaze balls (book is two halves called book 1 and book 2). I know this is a rambling mess but wanted no spoilers.

For my part the two books which make up the wastelands are vastly different and the second book, Lud, was weak for 100 pages but once they got to the city of Lud it got really good especially with the Tick Tock Man plot and how he moves at extreme speeds and even stabs a woman while still appearing to be sitting on his throne. Also the cliffhanger wasn’t a problem for me I knew it was coming because I heard about it but I still mildly question myself how they’re going to outsmart Blaine

When R.F (the dark man) came back and dropped the hardest reference to The Stand, that blew my mind. Also enjoyed the ending, obviously would have been upset if The Waste Lands was a one-off book, but i now it will be concluded properly in the next instalment.

Oh man! "My life for youuuuu!" I've actually seen that line in another author's work but I don't want to give any spoilers. It's just a wink and a throw away line but I was like "NO WAY!!!"

I’m literally here for this. I loved that. And the single time the book refers to him as “the dark man”. Bro. I loved how it hints to a soft spot he had for The Trashcan Man.

King is renowned for endings that finish with a giant spider, 200 extra pages, a ‘wait, what?’ or a wet fart. The Waste Lands falls somewhere between options 3 and 4. When you read this and Wizard and Glass back to back it doesn’t feel that jarring, but I reckon a 6 year wait would have driven me nuts. Great and fair review as always. You’ll have a blast with Wizard and Glass and, if you haven’t already read it, Salem’s Lot. I envy you getting to read ‘Salem’s Lot for the first time, it’s one of my absolute favourite books, not just by King, but by anyone.

I like that you said Oi was "a useful person to have around." Anyone who finishes the series and doesn't think of Oi as his own rugged, little, autonomous soul is probably lacking one themselves.

You have motivated me to finally start the Dark tower series. I have the books and I keep side-eying them on my shelf ( I feel they’re judging me 😂) I've taken the plunge to tackle the first book over this weekend. When I resurrect I check back with you and let you know if it was worth it 🫣 Your review has me feeling I'm missing out on an epic adventure( and I refused to me left out 😂😂🤣)

@@PaperbackJourneys I haven’t started it as yet, I decided to start April 1st when I had less books to read ( even though I never have less books to read 😂) I definitely have it out and my nightstand ready to tackle it come the first. I’m going in with and open mind and since i hate to DNF books I’ll fight with it straight to the end🤭🤣 I will update you on my progress.

Waiting 6 years for the next chapter was à real GOOD expérience ! Because the story and characters grows on you... and Stephen King talked about it in his books meantime (in his "préfaces” et ”postfaces”... sorry don’t know the right word, I’m french.... when he speak to the reader before or after the story...) That makes me love King and this story more ! Your énergie is so communicative !

Oh man, I love the dark tower. Watching your reaction is like getting to reread it. I look forward to your videos. Edit: I actually completely forgot that the book ended that way. It's been a long time since I read it. But I think I forgot it because the following books are good. And by this point I was so invested in the story that I wanted to read more.

Another great review, as far as Stephen King endings they are very hit and miss and sometimes terrible as you may find out. He occasionally nails them like in the story Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, 11/22/63, etc. I am glad I didn't take the Dark Tower journey until all the books were written as nothing, I hate more than waiting years for a story to continue or end. I am looking at you George RR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss who I have given up on by now.

Yeah I can't even imagine GRRM finishing the series in his lifetime. It might end up with Brandon Sanderson having to step in and finish the series like he did with Wheel of Time. Hopefully not though. I want GRRM to make it to the end. He just takes so long!

I feel like the ending was underwhelming but needed on Stephan kings part. The next book is like a long flashback and if he didn’t have this ending play out the way it did then they would have probably made wizard and glass a prologue

I loved the ending but only because I already had Wizard and glass!!! 🤣So I didn't have to wait! xD But I honestly was shocked that King didn't end the story at them boarding Blain! I thought that would have been an easy natural ending. Also to defeat Blain I am SHOCKED that Jake didn't ask him, :What is the truth?" If u remember Jake's fever dream poem repeats the line, 'and that is thruth' And the woman in shadows' she is the truth' and the 'gunslighner he is the truth' Blain might now famous poems in our world but her doesn't know everything! For example he didn't know that the random actress from family matters wouldn't be a good romantic partner for Jake. So Blain is not all knowing! So he is VERY unlikely to know about Jake's random poem. Plus then the poem would have had even more foreshadowing and importance! Also then the key to defeat Blaine would have been right in front of us the whole time and that is the key to a good riddle!!! THIS video ROCKED!!! Seriously u have great energy! U r funny but also seriously and thoughtful! It was a total joy to watch!!

You know what!? I didn't even think of that! That's such a simple solution. Rather than coming up with a answer to the riddle just cut back a little and have it end with them boarding the train and leaving the city behind. You're right!! I totally agree about Tik Tok Man. With a name like that, I was expecting someone dark but whimsical, like a messed up fairy tale character. Instead we got some viking dude. Kinda a let down, I guess. Surprised you didn't mention Randall Flagg btw.

What did I think about the ending? Well, I felt there was no ending at all. I wouldn't call it an open one, the ending does not exist in this book. So I immediately picked up the next one and read the first chapter. That was the ending for me. Yes, very cruel from Stephen King to make people waiting 6 years in that train. You have a real gift to recap stories in such a passionate way. Emotions are oozing from the screen and I really relive this adventure.

I read this novel when it was new. What did I think of the ending? I was pissed. Until I read the last novel, I wasn't positive he would ever finish the series. Does that mean I didn't buy his next novel? No. I bought it, and the next, and the next. Some books are genius, some are mediocre, a couple are trash. Who is the better alternative?

I don't think I have anything against cliffhangers, as long as they're kind of intentional? With this ending it genuinely felt like Stephen King just couldn't think of an ending and so decided he was a bit tired of writing the story and so wrote an apology note to his readers instead. It didn't annoy me as much as it did his fans back then because I was able to immediately pick up the next book of a completed series. I just found it so bizarre though. @@darnes12 He's definitely a prolific writer and has so many original ideas, but he also famously struggles with endings because he doesn't plot out his books and writes himself into corners that he struggles to get out of. This just felt like a particularly egregious example of that, as he even states at the end of the book "many readers will be displeased with the ending." I think he reached the end and just didn't know how to defeat Blaine and Mono with riddles and decided he wanted to write something else so wrote that letter saying sorry basically. I think a better cliffhanger would have been if Eddie outsmarted Blaine and they arrived in Topeka and realised that they were in the world of The Stand, picking up the newspaper clippings about the super flu as they did in Wizard and Glass. With that said, I did really enjoy The Waste Lands and having different opinions is what makes communities like these fun.

Stephen King has a career long problem with knowing how to end his books. The classic example is the original end of The Stand. I know he likes to writes without an outline or plan, but it seems like he just types till he's fed up..then has something silly happen, or not. And stops. The people who wrote the tv series Lost seemed to draw all the wrong conclusions from the King method of writing.

Ah yeah! You've hit on a point that many King fans (myself included) often discuss-the endings. You're right, Stephen King's approach to endings has been a subject of debate for years. The original ending of 'The Stand' is certainly a textbook example of what some people find problematic. King's "gardener" style of writing-letting the story grow organically rather than planning it out meticulously-does sometimes lead to endings that can feel abrupt or less cohesive. It's almost like you can see him trying to tie up all the loose threads in a hurry. As for the creators of 'Lost,' it's interesting to draw a parallel there. Thanks so much for commenting.

@@PaperbackJourneys What an exceptionally polite reply! King is such a muddle of contradictions, which I find very endearing. He would have made a PERFECT writer for Victorian penny dreadfulls, where what mattered was the prevailing atmosphere, a host of interesting characters, compelling events occurring at regular intervals often unexplained, thousands of plot threads and no real need to ever end the story. There's much about King's personality and life which strikes me a generally jolly Dickensian. Mark Twain, who also wrote by the pound, in one of his books, whenever he ran out of ideas for any character, he'd have them walk out in a back garden and fall down a well. Managing to make a very funny virtue out of a problem. How would life be possible without novelists!

I often find myself disappointed in Stephen King endings. I'll love the characters, story within, etc... then the end is a big spider or some other weak ass WTF ending??

Oh man. It happens again and again. Sometimes he sticks the landing but just as often he come up with something totally out of left field.
