this show really suffers from its limited season and episode length. So many storylines could've been expanded on if only they were given more time to be fleshed out.

I think these problems could be solved if the show wasn't limited to 11 minutes per episode, 10 episodes per season, and a 40-minute special each season finale. That's one of the things I wish were different. Overall, I love this show and don't even have many criticisms about it.

They actually made her like the horse in the book,making her not use well,ironic

Despite the inconsistent power system and timeline the show surprisingly is well written enough for me to just forgive these blunders 😭 the buildup for the samadhi fire was good imo, it wasn't sudden. However they completely nerfed it and never brought it up again, which is fascinating since it's a potent deity killer

I’m really exited for S5 because I’m pretty sure the writers confirmed that we will be exploring Mei and her family WAY more in S5 (ALSO it is the year of the dragon so yk🐉)

Amazing how the show is still this good, even in its weaker seasons. I feel like that's a testament to just how solid Mokie Kid actually is. I really hope we get a lot of more character focused seasons that can tie their arcs together a little better though.

I think season 3 should be a Redson centric season, like subtracting the Samadhi fire failing and leaving a smaller ring inside of him. In season 3 Redson coming with the crew to stop the Lady Bone Demon to get some closure of what she done to his father. Also we can get a plot line of Redson reclaiming the power that gave him so much trouble when he was a kid, just like MK reclaiming Wukongs powers.

Hopefully in S5 they get a good interaction between Mei and wukong because they like NEVER interact on their own in S4 and any time they DO interact it’s always with the GROUP. Heck I actually don’t think they even TALK to eachother in S4! So, either they just didn’t realise they didn’t make these two interact OR they are trying to save it for S5.

Honestly, it never occurred to me that Mei doesn’t really have many victories. The most I heard of Mei in context of season 3 was in terms of shipping, rather than her own character. (This is not to bash shippers or anything, just stating a personal observation.) It is a worrying pattern in general, but it has a bit more weight bc its the only main female character. The pattern of “Mei powers up, then is interrupted by outside factor” still continues in the season 4 special.

Macaque never gets called out with Wukong, just Wukong and It feel let down and disappointed, that Wukong only one gets the consequences from Mei herself

Your point about the samadhi fire scene is literally shown through the shots. While she’s consumed by the samadhi fire, the pinnacle of everything the show had been hinting about her for the entire season, the camera is almost exclusively on Wukong and the rest of the cast.

I hate that for the whole season they kept saying that the samadhi fire was the ONLY way to defeat lbd but then proceeded to defeat her without it. It was so disappointing cause Mei could’ve finally had her own victory.

I'll say one thing here, the smartie kid episode holds nothing to the plot of season 3 asides giving MK his golden eyes of truth back, and it couldve been a better episode with the same characters. Its that type of episode that feels it should've been in season one as a slice of life, and it could've been where MK tries to win this game and continues to fail, so Mei drags Wukong, as the others are busy with the TEA, to find an alternative. And maybe her and Monkey King could've talked about their love for MK, or their differences, or maybe Wukong tried to distance himself at the mention of her ancestors fue to the samadhi fire or him missing them too greatly. Maybe we get him talking to jer about jer family, and she shows and talks about her dynamic with them, but Wulong feels unsure as Ao Lie was one of his besties(especially since hes a canonical horse girl). And goes out of his way to show that her ancestors should be proud of her or something akin to that. Idk maybe goldfish demon guy could be a ruse and hilds a grudge against mei's family and underestimates her since she may not be the idea of what he had in mind. I just do my best to avoid that episode since i feel it doesn't do anything.

Glad to see someone else love the show but still retain issues with it! It has a rather confusing continuity (it picks and chooses what carries over from JTTW, whether MK is actually invincible or not, etc), its focus on the main cast is inbalanced, and sometimes it’s too fast-paced for its own good. Despite that, we can still say it’s one hell of a show!! Can’t wait to see your next video on it. From the sounds of it, we’re not getting season 5 for a while yet.

I'm still waiting for that Macque video since he's one of the coolest characters in the series of monkey kid and a very interesting character.

My other peeves with this season was Episode 3, Macaque not getting called out for his faults and Wukong not bothering to interact with the rest of the cast. I know that they look like his old friends and it’s probably uncomfortable for him to look at the shadows of his past, but they still need his help both physically and mentally. Especially MK, he was clearly traumatized and no one bothered to comfort him about it. I enjoy your analysis still. Can’t wait to see other videos like this.

I feel like with all the situations of MK always overshadowing Mei in shows of power, the writers are setting up some sort of “warrior is abandoned by hero” thing with him, but I personally would prefer a better character arc for her over that repeating history stuff. I would have loved to see a struggle of having to suppress her loud personality in order to control the fire, and redefining her perception of herself within her conflict with family!!

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="680">11:20</a> Mei's power build up and being interrupted by MK's story/powers honestly doesn't really bother me as much as I thought it would, because Mei and MK have often had their dynamic be compared to Wukong and Macaque. We all know the story of the Hero and the Warrior, and how Wukong would always steal the spotlight, leaving Macaque behind in the shadows. I don't know if it is intentional or not, but this is happening with Mei in MK's story. If Season 5 really is expanding more on Mei's story, we may start to see the big shift in their dynamic and Mei taking up more of the action while MK is struggling with his issues, much similar to what Macaque had to do when Wukong was dealing with his own (before or after the havoc in heaven, you can decide)

Idk why but season 3 is one that I constantly find rewatching (besides s2) and had a plot twist I wasn't expecting Fair points, IMO it's the best

I agree with all of this but tbh I feel like the Fire should’ve went to redson in the first place, don’t get my wrong I love mei but I feel like she doesn’t even need it 😭 + SHE DOSENT EVEN USE IT IN SEASON 4 but if they kept redson a villain and gave him the fire omg it would’ve been amazing

honestly I feel the way this couldve been handled was probably just giving the show more time. They didnt fully know if they were getting a season 4 and probably felt they had to tie it all up in a nice bow. I wish we wouldve had some more focus on mei trying to control the samadhi fire in season 4. we get a mention and thats it. It felt like it was brushed away in favor of MK's whole thing. I absolutely love season 3, its my favorite of all the seasons, but the samadhi fire deserved a bit more time. cutting out episode 3 and giving the samadhi fire one more episode seems like the best course of action in my opinion. along with season 4 giving a bit more of focus with it. we get a hint of mei development with what she tells ao lie, but like, nothing beyond that. I want a liiitle bit more on that front. nothing that breaks the plot in my opinion, but def something that should be adressed

I hope that in season 5 (if there will be a season 5) that mei, pigsy,sandy,tang, and Nezha have more development and impact on the story. Edit: I realize that it would also be nice if their ancestors could have more development aswell

I'm sorry but i will never not be insanely pissed and upset about how the fire was given to mei instead of red son, this plot choice in my opinion is a flaw in of itself. They wasted a potential villain-to-redemption arc for him and he ends up feeling more like a side character when he should be more important. If you disagree with me saying the fire should have been reds, just think for a moment how insanely interesting of a plot that would be, a sort-of-ally suddenly losing his mind and becoming another threat before a redemption, reds redemption has been built up, even subtly, since season one and i fully expected for it to reach its climax and conclusion in season 3 but noooooo they went with giving mei an "ok" arc when she deserved so much more and making red suddenly a good-ish guy MEI DESERVES HER OWN REAL ARC. this didn't feel like her arc! I can't even recall if she developed AT ALL! *TRAUMA IS NOT DEVELOPMENT*

This show could've definitely used some of teen titans touches(13 episode per season,episodes 20-23 minutes or longer,each season dedicated to One character,less hyperactive animation)! No?

I wonder why the samadhi fire didn't affect Wukong? In JTTW it was the only 'fire that Sun Wukong wasn't immune to? (I think I'd like to see Mei being mad after seeing SWK at the temple and attacking him and then MK comes in and trys to stop her because he doesn't want to hurt his mentor and Mei is like, "why are you here MK!?" with a mix of shame, anger at being stopped and is worried for MK! (I am NOT a writer, please forgive me if it's a bit off from the timing of the show or just a bit too cringe)

I can't make any promises, but mei got a giant lego mech and dragon figure. Both over 100 Canadian. So i really don't imagine she isn't gonna be left behind considering the show still is a toy add.

One of the examples are "Won't be difficult to fly,it's for 8 years old and above!" joke and the Wukong rocket scene.It's clear that LEGO just want to sell a typical adventure-themed toys,but the people in charge of writing has different priorities.There's also Flying Bark leaving,and I heard that the reason was LEGO was pushing them to work faster on season 5 so they can release the newest wave.Not to mention,the awful decision to keep releasing episodes in shorter durations.Honestly,it probably has to do with tv running schedules,I could be wrong.But if that's the case,us fans outside china can't do anything about it since Lego seems to really like playing safe,as seen from their decision to choose a studio that doesn't specialize in frame-by-frame animation but has worked with them before (I've heard that they're also a company under LEGO,which if true makes a lot of sense). How does this connect to the thing you pointed out? LEGO actually released a set of Ao Guang's palace,complete with the Iron Rod that Wukong later took.That's why they have a line that points out exactly that,probably for the set's target audience to get what's going on on the set while benefitting from their 'intention' (I mean their real intention is money,hehe) to introduce kids to their story.This and MK being the main character that appears the most,can easily make whatever they could've planned for Mei getting scrapped. I feel like there's always an objective to make the story good and never betray the source material,and I can see the writers trying their hardest to do so.I mean,look at the references in "The Winning Side" (or just whatever Macaque does in his appearances that develops MK's character),Tang's speech and Ao Lie's speech to Mei...it's true to their original purpose in the book.But it clashes with Lego wanting to sell lots of toys immediately. In short,I feel like this cartoon has been running on luck and if the future seasons are better than expected,we're lucky.Seriously,a cartoon that creates a spin-off of the character/novel that inspires half of the Shōnen/animes out there that is funny like a regular Saturday morning cartoon for kids with Sakuga' level animation? That's too good to be true for me.

i know this is kinda irrelevant to the topic of the overall video but i wish mei went at wukong a little bit harder at the end of the season. he's quite literally the reason she has the samadhi fire and his mistakes directly led to everything that went on in season 3. idk i just wish she grilled him a little harder, because he kind of deserves it at this point. idk lmao i know its irrelevant but its just a thought i had whilst rewatching the show

i 100% agree on the mei and wukong thing like they definitely deserved more screentime together, i love their dynamic so much the title had me nervous(cuz i LOVE season 3 lol) but youre very right here, i wish the show didnt push mei aside as often as they do

A personal annoyance when it comes to the shows writing, especially for season 3, was the wasted potential and missed opportunity of Mei’s powers and reason’s usage within the season. I found it weird that mei, a Chinese dragon, barely uses her dragon abilities, just the sword snd dragonkinesis, which is cool but her other abilities would be amazing to see. Gassing dragons can grant wishes, shapeshift and control the water and weather. Since mei already has an arc about accepting herself as part of her family, I think I’d would’ve been if after meeting Ao Guang, he wouldn’t taught her about her “true potential” when it came to her powers and abilities as a dragon, insulating her to know more about her family and culture. I was mainly thinking that this comics coincided with mei practicing controlling lightning, water or gaining her dragon from in the background of season 3, which couldn’t coincided with her trying to use her new found powers to break free from the fire of samadhi but failing; resulting in her feeling useless, dangerous, ect and have her character arc then be similar to MK’s with trying to gain/ learn her powers. It also would’ve then made sense to have her try and relinquish the fire from her since she knows it’s dangerous and doesn’t want to use it on top of already having a set of abilities that she wants to master. Given the fact that redson himself was the person who made the samadhi fire and even trained mei in joe to harness and control it I thought it was weird that there wasn’t a scene where they “gave” it back to him since he seems like the best option to have it, plus he’s redeemed in a sense and we don’t need two fire users on the team (oh wait mei never used it again so I guess we do only have one lol). Spitballing but I think they definitely could’ve done more with mei in general, especially in s3

really really well said. my sister and i were also so confused when they never mentioned the samadhi fire again!! and when they trained with shifu subhodi he said mei needed to grow and then. didn't bring it up again. incredibly strange. i love mei and i wish (as you said with the moon episode) that she was more intertwined with characters besides mk, and made her anger at wukong built up more.

Ive always felt like mei and wukong would always have an interesting dynamic because of how similar mei is to wukongs younger self(Im not saying they are similar in issuses) and the whole samadhi fire couldve really help show it. Side note how the HELL DID MEI LOSE? Youre telling me she has a powerful weapon wanted by both sides because it could beat the lbd and she loses. Why? What benefit does it have?

I feel like they could be doing a lot more with Mei in general, there’s a lot of setup with her in seasons 3 and 4 that ends up falling to the wayside.

I have so many Mei theory’s that I’m hoping they explore in season 5 mostly her family and relations to the dragon of the east one as her parents have their own dragon form things but Mei doesn’t. The dragon she fights with is Aolie’s dragon form and He is tied to the sword somehow and I want to know more.

To me it doesn’t make sense that Red son didn’t receive the Fire back as the original vessel I understand the DBK family are side characters of the side characters but Red son has been practicing all of his life with his flame and for that just to be a portion of what his original self was and beyond that there’s no explanation of why he was born with that much power the they literally just say DBK kids are special but he was Super special like??? And all of that for this super OP World changing power just to end up as nothing in the next season is almost ridiculous

Monkie kid is a great show though by itself it would be a great show with the sets it is Aaaaaaaa btw the shot when mai uses her dragon on macaque and mk it it is great the chills for me for no reason

In seasone 4 when Subhodi mentios that Mei doesn't have the Samadhi fire anymore I was so confused. Mei was still able to use green fire so I guess she just can use fire now? And did she give it back to Red Son? But then why didn't he use it against Azure Lion? WHERE IS THE SAMADHI FIRE?!

This show terribly need longer duration, but if they can't, they need more episodes quota. But, I also know this will be expense for the show's overal animation. I just hope they find solution for this.

I think Mei's training could have been important if they hadn't made the fire null and void after the season 3 special. We never see it in s4 and that is disappointing to me because it makes it feel as tho it never had meaning in the first place, in season 3 it was a mcguffin to drive the story along and once aquired it was basically forgotten about as a necessary part to defeat LBD and disappears right after her defeat

I was curious if I am able to show your works in it to talk about how people really like the theme, I also understand the irony of asking that on this video specifically, but honestly all these are valid points and I'd mention that in the video too. My biggest gripe with the show is how there is ZERO representation of any group. There's no racial minorities, gays, transgenders, fats, queers, xens, and the list goes on. They never even asked a single person what their pronouns were. Made it unwatchable

Something i find annoying about season 3(/2) along with mei 2 was LBD, tbh. Her motivation was “the World is flawed so i wanna destroy it and make it perfect” which i just never understood because nothing is ever perfect and there has to be flaws somewhere. It feels like such a shallow and Generic motivation as well i’ve heard a thousand times before. + i just didnt lile her personality either, as it felt like she was just set up to be Dark Mysterious and Evil and in the end thats all she really became. It gave some good moments and gave good episodes, but its obviously never good to feel like the main and very serious villian is both dumb and extremely Generic. +Also we barely Got any episodes without her and so i just started getting really tired of her and watching LMK in general tbh. Season 3 just felt really Weak in general for me tbh. I dont really mind if anybody likes her and if you do, please do tell me why bc i really really wanna like season 3/2! And no i dont hate the entirety of season 3/2 or anything LBD is in. There was a lot of good Character arcs episodes and development, i just didnt like LBD.
