Raven was a missed opportunity for the WWF when he debuted in 2000. Raven had already established himself as one of the 90's greatest wrestling gimmicks in both ECW and WCW, but in this wrestling documentary we see how his time in WWE felt like a waste of time. Vince McMahon supposedly didn't like him, and for the man formerly known as Johnny Polo, that was a very bad omen.

Raven could have at least been a consistent upper midcard guy in WWE. Even Stone Cold in his book said that WWE “missed the boat” on Raven.

They also capitalized on a ton. Glen Jacob’s for example played two horrible gimmicks before debuting as Kane. In wrestling, far more gimmicks go the wayside than stick in our minds forever. It takes hall of fame level talent to pull the latter off. Wrestling is one of the toughest businesses on the planet.

Raven is my favorite wrestler! His ECW run was amazing and his feud with Tommy Dreamer has lasted 28 years! Now that’s long term story telling! He also has more title reigns in wrestling history!

He's just one of those guys from the hardcore era that you actually remember. Even at the time, when I was like 20, I felt like they just didn't know what to do with him at all. WWE is like the EA of wrestling.

Simple, Vince for the most part doesn't like gimmicks he didn't create. At the very least he will try to change them somewhat. He also didn't like Raven very much from when he worked in the WWF earlier on. It was like he's an ECW guy? Just put him in the hardcore division and be done with it.

Most people don't realize that Raven AKA Scott Levy was hired for what he could do behind the scenes for television and given the character Johnny Polo for his job as a color commentator on various WWF television shows and he ran WWF radio back when that was a thing. He had worked for ESPN previously while he was a wrestler for Global Force Wrestling and had learned how to produce sports television. The same way you see modern athletes transition to working at ESPN as commentators. Nobody really wanted him as a wrestler and his ideas often clashed with old school wrestling ideas and promoters. McMahon liked Scott Levy just fine until Scott wanted to be an active wrestler full time instead of a manager. He was a manager though because he was an Assistant Director of Raw. Scott Levy was in management at WWF. He quit his job there to take a job as a wrestler for the NWA and McMahon felt betrayed. McMahon felt like he had invested a lot of time and effort into Scott Levy and that he was ungrateful. Just like a jilted lover McMahon put him on the shit list and the future Raven never kissed his ass before coming back. McMahon didn't even know he'd been rehired and as soon as McMahon did know Ravens days were numbered.

Vince was pissed when they found out that Raven had been hired back according to Jim Ross. He was never gonna get a push. Raven's only option was to get over without one.

As a kid, I was never a Raven fan. However, he always put on a good match, and I was always glued to my seat. That's how you know that he was great at his job.

When I was little, I liked Undertaker, then Kane in my early teens. Raven was interesting, almost always. I remember watching live when a crazed fan hopped the fence and went to tackle him. Raven rolled right outta his jacket and was like WTF? Dude got dealt with by security and Raven went on and finished the match. I think Saturn was who he fought that night.

I loved Raven in ECW. But lets be honest. When he was in ECW he looked cool. He was a dark character but he was also a young, good looking jacked up dude at the same time. Dude was like a grunge Jim Morrison. Obviously he's not shy about talking about his bad habits so the reason for this is obvious but when he came to WWE in 2000, I immediately thought what happened to him?, he looks like shit. He looked like he'd aged about 20 years in 5 years. If he was 1996 Raven then Maybe Vince would have used him better but all the drugs and alcohol the guy was doing made him look a shell of himself when he first got to WWE. He did get back in shape later but he was already seen as a job guy by that point.

It’s crazy cause in 2002 I felt Raven had such a good look! The kilt and he was ripped af again. But I agree, when he came in the year 2000 he looked like shit. Super skinny, baggy clothes and the facial hair just made him look homeless.

Raven, Saturn, etc. all got shafted so hard. I cant believe they all were wasted in the mid card/hardcore title conversation, etc. They were my favorite growing up. They could have really been incredible.

My personal opinion is that the only person that really understood Raven's character creatively was Raven. In ECW he was able to do whatever the hell he wanted and his stuff was amazing. But when he then had to work with a creative team, who else is really going to be able to write for that character in a way that understands what the character is on about?

I think they wasted him in WCW to some degree. He was well booked to begin with, but I think he should have higher up the card. By late 1998, they seemed to have given up on him. His and Kanyon's feud was cut extremely short and should have been awesome.

His run as US Champion in WCW was the peak of his career for sure. Yeah, I know he held the ECW and TNA World Titles, but the US Title was (and still is) far more prestigious than those world titles. WWE treats it as more of a lower-mid-card title these days as they have two world titles but back in the day it was very much upper-mid and higher and was the second most prestigious belt, often held by main eventers and legends such as Flair, Sting, Goldberg, Bret Hart, etc...

Had WCW been smart and actually end the NWO storyline on time, Raven would have been the perfect top heel in the post-NWO era. No heel in the company attracted more heat than him.

Raven was completely in sync with the changing music and fashion culture of the time, he was over because so many wrestlers were clinging to the 80's and he was reaching the young Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden fans. 9:28 - I used to pop as much for that roll out of the ring as the Evenflow DDT. It was like him rolling out of bed hungover, looked so damn cool.

Good video, couple of points though - Saturn and Raven actually won the tag titles after their feud together. Raven was using the "What About Me, What About Raven" line in WCW. All in all, great video, thank you!!

Vince tried and, certainly, failed to understand the 'Raven' gimmick. Now, Scotty, being Scotty, would argue with Vince backstage at the towers about it, calling Vince's bluff. Scotty snapped and hit the drink hard.

It really baffles me that WWE wasted Raven. Raven had the look, the charisma, and had the best promos of his era. Raven in the peak of WWF's attitude era should've gone together like peanut butter & jelly. But nah, Vince really dropped the ball hard on Raven. Would've been cool to see him feud with Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, John Cena, and Randy Orton, just to name a few.

The rooster was known to be extremely competitive in 90's during his era. If you were to compare Raven then to nowdays WWE ( in terms of success and popularity and cardness) during his tenure he was a midcard but compared to nowdays he would be a upper midcard if not a main eventer. Think about it the top cards of WCW are all legends he was one knotch below them most likely not by an aweful lot.😂😂

The yelled Vince "who the FVCK hired Johnny Polo ?" made my day 😂😂 I doubt JR can answered that. But in this point, i can't blame JR to brought Raven into WWE (even tho without Vince permission) because he believe with Raven's talent. Should we be thankful with Vince's allegations ? Because of that allegations..it moves away Vince more and more from being one and only head creative of WWE.
