Don't turn your back to the glass: They can't see your face, thus they cannot mimic you. Don't go near the burrows: Death? They lived down there, so going in kept you out of the light. You'd die. Opening the door after sunset: Same as above. You are out of the light, thus you will die. The rules were there to keep them "safe". Mina broke the rules because she was at a point in her life where she didn't care or was very brave, but she was extremely curious as well and wanted to know what the hell was going on. She wanted to leave too, so she broke the rules to figure it out. If she hadn't broken them, they would all be there still and they would have never found the hatch to the bunker below. I really enjoyed it. The ending when Madeline was in the house before the one character came home was surprising. I knew something was up with Madeline and I assumed she was one of them. I figured she was there to give them rules, so they would stay and the Watchers could observe them until the end. I thought she was in on it the whole time. Super fun movie in my opinion. Good to see Dakota Fanning back on screen.
Yup, I feel some critics are just being overly critical for that sake but overall it was a good film esp for a 1st timer (ok, I know she had a lot of help from pops and it's based on a book, still). Would be cool to see a 2nd movie.
@@spendingtimetogether8428 thief of joy is comparison. Her dad is awesome, but she’s got her own way of film making she has to master. She’s on a good path so far!
In the film when she is watching the videos of the professor he explains he ended up “treating” the window, so it used to be normal but he made it into a 1 way thing, I can’t remember his reason but he does say why.
Naw.. movie was too predictable. I didn't even think it was a horror. And I agree the Madeline character gave it away by explaining the "Cloning" and showed her cloned so I was like "Oh she knows too much that's not original" and then the door on the floor was M.Night-ish but I expected that already.
I thought they were all human. But nice twist ending. What's confusing is if Madeline was half Fey then where did the other Fey come from to clone Ciara? That's a plot hole.
I liked the fact that it wasn't too scary. I wouldn't call it horror. It's a story about betrayal, anger, revenge, guilt and redemption. Beautiful. I watched the movie because Dakota was in it. She didn't disappoint.
Yeah I didnt get that.😂😂😂 I knew she off, cause she knew too much, even the old man in the bunker she didnt say sht... lmao I mean who would ever fall in love with a 20foot black winged alien.. and they say they were GODS amongst thee earth but cant be in the SUN?? Sounds heavily demonic to me!!! Lock that sht up for real!!!
No shade to anyone who worked hard on this movie, but for anyone who was disappointed in the film, the book by A.M. Shine is MUCH better. In fact, "Stay In The Light", the sequel to A.M. Shine's book "The Watchers" is coming out in October! Please give it a chance, as "The Watchers" is a PHENOMENAL book.
just came from the movie theaters and this movie didn't dissapoint. I don't think it's too scary but the story is so interesting and the 3rd act of the movie really sold it for me
I just saw this yesterday as well and I really enjoyed the third act too. I thought it was just going to be them trying to escape at the end and that would be the end of the movie. I really enjoyed the fairy/changling folklore and mythology in the third act, I was curious to see what Ishana Shyamalan had in store for us in her theatrical directing debut and I enjoyed the story and the movie. She did an awesome job, great first movie and I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us. ❤😊❤
Shamalam's daughter. Wow she done a great job. Props to her , a masterclass in film making. It's rare to have movies with great pace, intrigue and resolution. It was a very satisfying thrill ride with a great twist. (Maybe I'm a cheap date...you're bar is very high).
her wearing a wig actually makes sense. Showing that perhaps since she hates herself so much, she tries to become and live as another person. Also gives a simile to the fairy creatures; who also transform themselves but literally achieve it, and want to become something else.
AM Shine is a freemason dirt bag, none of what he wrote in the book was his ideas. He’s simply telling us the story of Reptilians, and is very familiar with the events of ancient times.
Great movie. I think the watchers were meant to be how we see ourselves and trying to change for others. The glass box representing how we present our untrue selves to the world.
come on, they are not fairies but the WATCHER ANGELS! They call them fairies in the film, but there are many parts in the film that clearly refer to angels. of course Hollywood doesn't like it when the plot revolves around angels and God's existence. (SPOILER) for example, these creatures corrupted humanity, but it is always said that they only made people strong... they mated with human women and fathered giants. GOD instructed his archangels to punish the WATCHERs of heaven very severely by crushing them forever deep in the earth under rocks and stones and no longer being able to see the light. twist the truth a little and it works... there is supposed to be a book about this film. if the book describes the plot of the film like this, the author has based it on the story of the WATCHERs and changed a few things
@@duvetboa These things happened long before Christianity. Whether Celtic mythology or Nordic, Greek or Egyptian or Hinduism... it doesn't matter, it all has something to do with it! The fallen angels pretended to be gods. Zeus, Osiris, Apollo, Ra, Horus, Seth, etc. and recreated the world according to their ideas. They were the founders of every mythology on this earth! The most powerful of these angels/demons founded the most famous of all mythologies, such as Egyptian or Greek, for example. Hinduism has the majority of all fallen angels, namely over 30 million. There were 33 million in total. The fundamental truth of this world is that God the Creator created everything and his son is Jesus Christ. Yes, what is written in the Bible is the only truth.
I don't understand why people hate shyamalan films so much. I actually really enjoyed this film, it definitely had it's writing flaws but it was creative and intriguing. cinematically astounding though, the color grading is 100% my taste when it comes to thriller
So would the changlings also kill Madeline because she was a halfling? That’s why she had to follow the same rules with the others until they could help her find a way out of the forest? But at the end of the movie she’s flies, so couldn’t she have just flown away during the day? Or did she need to steal Nina’s identify so she could have a life? The other bit I didn’t get was why did Madeline tell them that the changelings looked like her, she didn’t have to tell them that hmm
Madeline said somewhere that she was an outcast to the rest of the changlings because she was a halfling (but didn’t know it yet) so it’s possible they would have killed her. Or she was just blending in and it was her human side that wanted to stay and protect the people there, as the montage shows at the end that she was loving and protective. At the end, she only got wings when she embraced her loving and caring side. The original fae were like that, and lost them when they were forced underground and developed bitterness towards humans. so when she let go of hatred for humans etc, she got wings like the ancient fae had.
I just knew one of them was gonna be the changeling. My first suspect was the old lady after she told her first time meeting one and taking her form and she knew just what they wanted them to do. And also the scene where she explained about changlings mating with humans (Though there were some scenes to throw you off) And the second, the protagonist after recalling how she liked to change her appearance to meet guys in bars and her fondness for the caged bird (like how the watcher liked watching the humans and maybe she didn't know she was changling). Some parts were really stupid though, i would have found the bunker within hours out of boredom. And who and how the hell even built that bunker, and where were the changlings when they were building it? The old lady even said she went there by choice so why didn't they even think of questioning her after they found the bunker? The glass didn't even make sense as they seemed to easily crack it when they tried so how did the professor even manage to study them from inside that? And also like you said, how did that bird became a gps? Maybe it's just me but I just couldn't ignore those missing details and mixing in fantasy with the horror was so weird. Visually stunning though and the irony of the watchers and the ones being watched was funny but
Does anybody know why Mina went to the forest in the first place? And why the others did to? I assume it was explained and I just missed it. I can't find the answer on forums and its bothering me.
I also randomly wondered the same exact thing. Like at what point did i miss the reason those 3 ended up in the woods? I guess im wondering why they were chosen to be observed
The rules weren't pointless at all. The rules were put in place by the halfling to keep the people safe so she could escape eventually. The watchers didn't like the halfling cause she was different so she also needed to be protected from the full watchers, so the rules were to keep the humans alive, and to keep them away from getting killed from the watchers in the holes. Don't open the door is pretty self explanitory, and face the mirror is to keep the watchers satisfied to study them. So the rules were simple and made sense and the not going to far into the woods obviously made sense cause the professor had it mapped out. So I'm not sure what you mean at all by they were pointless. That is actually kind of a dumb statement. The rules aren't just there to be if you break them you get punished, the rules are there to keep the people safe. When she went in the whole she almost got taken but she was in the light enough. When they were locked outside they were able to hide and get back in, but had the watchers found them they would have both been killed. So it's not like instant death, but again every time the rules were broken you were shown why the rules were made, and then when you find out she's a halfling at the end the rules actually make more sense, that she created the fules and she knows what they are and how to stay somewhat safe, until they figure out a way out.
It was by the professor and workers. Then during the night the Professor would go into the bunker and leave them out there which meant that The Watchers would then get them
Remember, the Professor built the coop and the bunker sacrificing the lives of many Irishmen in the process. Mina isnt a watcher but perhaps Conor McGregor is I believe
They sound like a group of angels that are literally called 'watchers' as well. According to the Book of Enoch, there were angels called "Watcher" angels that were told by God to keep watch over humanity. They did so for a small while, taking care of them, keeping them out of trouble and even living in harmony with them. But than the Watcher angels started to lust after humans, they accepted forms of worship from humanity and gave them the tools to make war. God destroyed both humanity and the watcher angels and their offspring called "Nephilim" with a great flood.
I knew it was Madeline, they gave it out the second day when Mina tells Danny “you believe everything Madeline tells you” . “Help me with the rope”. After he helps Mina and they get back in the coup right away Madeline knows everything Mina did and questions what Mina saw (how would Madeline know Mina saw something) .
@5:37 great observation! when you said "like a train of eyes watching on and observing" that's beautiful man! I never would have thought of it like that. but it's true.
Don't read this if you haven't seen the movie spoiler alert actually enjoy the movie a lot with some extra good points throughout the movie.. I like the fact that one of the watchers what's the old lady inside with them... I like the fact that they have the professor who was studying the watchers for a long time in his bunker... I like the fact that the professor tried to bring back by using one of the watchers as a substitute to his wife and I like the fact that they have the watchers were result of fairies in humans having babies in as a result they had to put that in the ground to keep them trap in stone cave.. I actually love the ending of the movie where the watcher was always watching and can change her form to anyone and was always watching.. I give the movie at 8 out of 10 I really enjoyed it
2019 Peele gives the movie Us . Also about clones or doppelganger. I haven't seen this Watchers yet, and I'm here to make a decision to give up my time & money.
@@lorrainewallis9560go on movie discount day if you can. There’s waay worse movies I’ve paid to see. It’s on par with the movie “Cabin in the Woods”, if u seen that one, but slightly better and more mature in my opinion, not by a lot though. It’s literally someone’s debut movie, not gonna be super great, a little forced and overdone at times, but that’s life
@@lorrainewallis9560in relation to Us by Peele, the stories are way too different in my opinion. Yeah they’re about doppelgängers, but The Watchers feels like a human story with a doppelgänger/mythological history, and Us feels primarily like a classic Doppelgänger story. That was my impression at least. The Watchers makes you afraid of cloned beasts and Us makes you afraid of humans with no sense of humanity
It’s definitely considered a thriller. But I suppose they don’t really label movies like that anymore. I actually enjoyed it, but now that I know it was the daughter and not the father who made the movie kinda makes sense now. His movies are usually misses.
I think ots cause Mina found out her secret. Madeline says to her i can't let u live now that i know my secret. I think if Mina didn't tell her she found out, Madeline would have left them alone
I will start off by saying...I really enjoyed the book. The ending of the book was better. It was adapted okay they missed important parts of the book that would've explained more background. So many parts were glazed over or changed.
She needs to act like one of them and I guess she does not know how to use a computer and maybe once you get trapped inside the forest in any direction other than that of the river, you'll never be able to get out. Madeline may have doubts about getting herself out but when she said that she could feel it while they were running, that's when she knew she could like how she could walk free during the day. It's how I see and understand it.
How did they stay all clean looking, with perfect hairdos? I didn't see a washer and dryer in the Coop. They lived in there for a year and no one moved the rug? It took them that long to realize that they were above a bunker? The movie made no sense, the dialogue only existed for exposition. Dakota is the only decent actress in the movie, but the script gave her no depth. M. Night's nepo daughter didn't have to make her first movie in the same genre as her father, but she did. That leads me to wonder if dad did more than just produce. And that is a real problem. There are directors who have to work for years in the industry before getting their first directorial gig. Quentin Tarantino comes to mind. After writing for a while, he finally got to make "Reservoir Dogs," and look how great that is. I give"The Watchers " four out of ten. Some in this comment section seem either very young, or not well versed in movies. This is bad. That's a fact, not just my opinion.
And to be honest ..... The movie could have ended with them on the boat. I would have been satisfied 🤷🏽🤷🏽 Could have left the monster reveal until they got to the boat.
Idk why but the rules made sense. 1. Don’t turn you back which mean because the watchers couldn’t replicate or study the human properly if your back was turned, it’s like a painter is painting they can’t paint who you are if your back is turned. 2. Don’t go near the burrows the fairies want to get to know u and replicate you, but they don’t want you to know where they live and what they look like or how they are in prison or secrets . 3.dont open the door. I’m thinking is because there nature was to kill if they killed every human that came through the forest they would get nowhere. But idk that what I got from it.staying in the light reminds me of vampire they can’t adapt to it. Maybe it burns them or weakens them.
Yea, just watched it....actually rented it....IMHO money wasted. I should have waited for it to drop on HBO or MAX, or STARZ. It was a fair movie...no jump scares....a pretty slow burn with an unsatisfying ending. Sorry.
Americans can relate to breaking the rules immediately. So that part makes sense to us lol. Maybe if your from a place that makes the rules for most of the last 1,000 years you see things differently
I actually enjoyed it I enjoy quite a few of his films. I understand his types of movies, but I didn’t know his daughter had a part of this very interesting. I think my favorite part was the ending. I was surprised.
I did enjoy this movie, I would have liked to see it end a bit differently though. Like if you can’t believe anything you see in the forest it could have given them the illusion of escaping and still trapped in the forest. But that wouldn’t have gone good with the deeper meaning of the movie that they could be anyone, anytime, anywhere. But all in all I did enjoy it
In the Book of Enoch, the watchers (Aramaic עִירִין, iyrin) are angels dispatched to Earth to watch over the humans. They soon begin to lust for human women and, at the prodding of their leader Samyaza, defect to illicitly instruct humanity and procreate among them, arriving on a mountain called Hermon.
@@JSB-2Z-2K Madeline is a Fae. When Madeline was wandering around the Forest, she saw a Fae mimicking her (Madeline). Madeline knew she (Madeline) was for a Human when she saw a Fae mimicking her (Madeline). I hope that explains it to you, also, watching the movie would explain it to you as well.

I really liked theWatchers........the movie was scary, suspenseful, well acted, and had the obligatory plot twist that the Shymalan's have adopted. the movie had great allegories. I personally ultimately judge movies based largely on entertainment value and i found theWatchers highly entertaining. My name is Fred Twilight Shmeezer by birth by the way!
I hate when my idea of where the story is going is better than where it goes. I thought i was going to be eldritch gode watching humans for entertainment.
Not great. Solid idea squandered in typical Shyamalan fashion. Twists pretty much revealed the second there was any set up and really insulted the audience moving into the third act. I'd recommend bc it was done fine, but if you've seen a lot of horror movies, this is a wasted opportunity with no surprises.
@@lizduffy9825 I try to draw a line between A) Probably wasn't worth it for ME, and B) Not worth YOUR time. The two things don't always go hand in hand, and this could very well be greatly enjoyed by someone who likes horror movies but doesn't have a broad experience with them. There are movies I really liked in 1983. When i watch them now, I think either, "This one really stood the test of time," or "I liked this because I was 13." 🤣
"The Watchers" is the debut feature of Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of director M. Night Shyamalan who is one of the film's producers. Ishana herself wrote the script based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine, achieving an interesting story that revolves around folk horror and a dark fairy tale, in addition to doing a great job as a director. The cast gives good performances, Dakota Fanning performs a magnificent role, Georgina Campbell plays a tender role with mastery and Olwen Fouéré demonstrates once again her histrionic ability and her Scream Queen skills. The cinematography work is top-notch, managing to capture a gloomy atmosphere in the filming locations. The soundtrack composed of traditional Irish bagpipes is effective for the story. "The Watchers" is a great film that plays with horror and fantasy.
Thought it was great up until they lost me at fairies. Would’ve been better if they just kept it as random monsters or something other than fairies. Corny
That’s a good thought. I was confused though about the bird because the guy said the bird doesn’t speak, but it started speaking in the forest and she never mentioned it or seemed bothered by it 🤔
@@loucipher7782 your clearly just watching the show & movie for a thrill of fear when you should of been paying attention to the similar story’s they both have. (Novice)
Hera has nothing to do with Irish Mythology it was humans who forced (after defeating them in a war) all the Irish Gods and magical creatures to retreat to their own world
I thought that it was gonna turn out that Mina, Ciara, and Daniel were actually in a psych ward and that their traumas were making them crazy and hallucinate a forest. I thought that the “Professor” was the psych ward creator watching their progress in rehabilitation. I knew Madeline was different cause she knew way too much, I didn’t think she would be a halfling, but more a doctor keeping them from going crazy in the ward. My theory was very off but interesting. Edit: I also thought this because Mina saw her sister when they were children in the same outfit as when her mom died. I thought that she was hallucinating because the watchers had never seen her sister especially as a young child so I didn’t think the watchers would know how to become her.
Seems occult. Sometimes those movies you have to know the occult meanings to get the movie. As if it wasn’t made for the enjoyment of the average person 🙄. The things you mention were off were all occult symbolism. Its hard to pull that off sometimes the movies start well but kinda get thrown off. Moon knight was like that too me. Such great potential but…
Very disappointed. Biggest plot hole. How was the bunker built ? He said it was built upon the lives of innocent people. Did they swim there or arrive on a boat ? Doesn't make sense.
I think since they are changelings, the reason why they should never show their backs is so that they can never copy them completely. In our local mythology that is similar to this, they would make their victims get lost in the woods and they would assume their place amongst your family. The missing person then would either turn into one of the trees or was already slaughtered by the doppelganger. To counter this, it is said that you should always wear your shirt inside out to prevent them from copying you completely so you can safely leave the forest and i feel like it is somewhat the same in this movie except they chose the 'not showing your back' since it might been based on a different mythology
I enjoyed the movie, except for the sketchy ending. Madeline has Mina by the throat, and tells her she's going to kill her and assume her identity. Then, in a total reversal, decides not to kill Mina but, rather, fly off to find more of her kind. Ishana appears to be a chip off the old block!
