Lyrics:
I first played the Pyramid Stage back in nineteen eighty four
my first-ever festival, I was like a kid in a candy store
I stayed up all night, man, grooving out of my skin
in love with the three-day city and all that moved within
And I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
gonna breathe that good old pure west country air
I'm going back to Worthy Farm with a guitar under my arm
Yeah I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
Played a storm in 'eighty-six, that was the year we were the kings
Fiddle bows and mandolins, sure broke a lot of strings
We played This Is The Sea and The Healing Has Begun
I climbed the Tor at the break of dawn just to salute the sun
And I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
gonna breathe that good old pure west country air
I'm going back to Worthy Farm with a guitar under my arm
Yeah I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
I saw Radiohead in 'ninety-seven, the Stones in twenty thirteen
hit the Other Stage and the poetry tent and everywhere in between
but the best set I ever witnessed was the night me and Billy Bragg
saw a busker band with a stand-up bass and trombone on the festival's old main drag
And I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
gonna breathe that good old pure west country air
I'm going back to Worthy Farm with a guitar under my arm
Yeah I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
I returned with Crazy Horse and McNabb in 'ninety-four
and two thousand zero, two, three and seven, but who's keeping score?
Twenty-fifteen we took the stage after Courtney Barnett's set
Seven years later, back in style and we ain't finished yet
And I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
gonna breathe that good old pure west country air
I'm going back to Worthy Farm with a guitar under my arm
Yeah I'm going back to Glastonbury Fayre
going back to Glastonbury Fayre

This is a significant reworking of an earlier solo Mike Scott song called Goin' Back To Glasters which Mike released as a 'B' side on the Building The City of Light single in 1995, the b side being a live recording perfomed at Glastonbury that same year. I love the fact that Mike has revised it and that it's on a Waterboys album at long last. It's definitely worth seeking out the original live recording though as both versions are gorgeous.

I saw you play in 84. The year my mum was murdered by NHS cutbacks. Then again in 1986 with my first baby on my knee. That special year I gazed across at the beautiful Greenfield from Babylon and promised him I would do my best to make that the whole festival instead of just a small part of it. In 1989 I was invited to launch the UK's first event Recycling service on a very small scale, at Glastonbury fayre. One year, could have been 96, I was asked to bring a recycling tractor down the main stage drag road just as you came on stage. Someone was asking the crowd to pass their waste into our bags as the volunteers walked amongst them. A huge roar went up from the crowd and for a millisecond I was utterly convinced they were cheering the idea of Recycling. But it was you they were cheering. I laughed so loud I nearly fell off that old red knacker. I didn't care much, I was helping the show go on. By then, we'd introduced recycling to 20 other festivals. In 1998 our crew were worn out by a sea of plastics. Our plans for REUSABLES hadn't been heard. We still were not allowed to recycle after Monday. Other events with less interest in helping, had become our bread and butter. On one of those other places, we stood crying on night, at midnight, all 25 crew sobbing, watching the glass popping as all stage vehicles were allowed to run across in front of the stage, because our lives were not as important as getting those tour buses away. This was 5 years after the ban on glass had been implemented. I left in 2005, to become a nurse. Too much mental illness. More mopping up to do elsewhere. In 2016, I sat opposite the Park stage, drinking water from a cup held out of my tent to the open sky, enough to fill it in 30 seconds. And the plastic is now in our blood. Their efforts to introduce stainless steel REUSABLES had just started. But I spotted some important mistakes. So after working with waste teams for another few seasons, I'm back, ready to help and be inspired all over again, by such marvelous words and glorious music. with this wash-hubs.org Thanks for being that inspiration and hope you'll excuse my opportunistic advert. We do need all the help we can get. I'm 61 and time is almost up. Please endorse us if you can 💚 Love from Canwoman
