Join Linda and Steve Dashew aboard the FPB 78 - 1 Cochise on a 7500 mile/12,070 kilometer record setting voyage, averaging 10 knots from Fiji to Panama against the winds and current, that has changed the prospects of cruising forever. Their 5450 mile/8770 kilometer leg, without a fuel stop, is the longest ever undertaken by a small motor yacht. You will be aboard as they thread their way through some of the most beautiful and navigationally dangerous waters on this planet. The Dashews will show you how they deal with severe thunder squalls, use modern navigation electronics, and catch fish on a state of the art meat line. You will hear stories of their past visits through the South Pacific, make a brief stop at exquisite Fatu Hiva, and learn how they do all of this in extreme comfort.

I think I'm starting to understand the idea behind the design. Long narrow bow that pierces the waves, rather than rising over them. An extended stern tail to assist in getting speed from a following sea safely. Mind you I'm glossing over the years of details and effort in that description. Exposed aluminum everywhere, lack of maintenance. You're sailing who needs that grief? The lack of excessive cabin space compared to length, so as to keep the center of gravity low, unlike most motor yachts that stuff cabin space everywhere possible, so you end up with a wallowing cow. Simple clean living space, high tech, high quality, yet not distracting from the view outside. After all that's why you're there. Every possible piece and part done to make extended cruising safe and comfortable. Am I close? I must say this boat is my favorite yacht of yours, mostly because of the enclosed matrix deck. I think that adds majorly to it's looks and livability. Confession time, I'm an avowed landlubber who takes showers because tubs have deep water. My sole time on the ocean has been on the ferry to Vancouver Island. Please excuse the lack of proper terminology. What you have done interest me. Thank you for the videos. Doug

The hull form is offshore supply/crew vessel,there are similar designs in Netherlands yes the vessel is very speedy that’s way none interior elements..
@DashewOffshore
@DashewOffshore 4 года назад
Howdy Nuts: You are very close. The distribution of interior volume is based on the following: 1-Keeping living areas as close to the motion center as possible for comfort and better rest at sea. 2-Systems within the engine room and elsewhere installed in such a manner that they are easily accessible for inspection and maintenance. 3-Room for supplies, and loose equipment so that it can be stored in an orderly, easily retrieved manner. Regarding the waterline length, this is a benefit in terms of reduced drag, and allows shaping the hull so that it is more easily steered compared to a shorter, fatter waterline design.

@DavidHHermanson

I don't think of this wasteful, environmentally disastrous lifestyle as at all "fortunate." For a couple who claim to love the sea yet still spend a tankage budget of "4700 usable gallons of diesel fuel" in order to prove that their latest design can go to windward (all while making a sales video - let's call this what it is), is the height of hypocrisy. The Dashews are just another profligate luxury brand, nothing less, and certainly nothing more. Let's call them the Kardashians of the sea. This video's "yacht" has long been supplanted. They're currently selling 97 footers.....motorboats that even more than this look like military patrol vessels. The Dashews call it a "battle-worthy look."

This is a ridiculous statement, but if win the lottery, this is what I'd buy. Of all the boats I've seen, these are my favorites. I like the Bering boats a lot, as well as some other real explorer boats, but these are just on a different level. So, win the lottery, go to nautical school, apprentice on a boat (I'm not a sailer) and buy one of these.... I think that's all I need to do. Need to start buying lottery tickets. Side note, the pictures they take are beautiful.

A 22% reduction in SOG results in 74% decrease in fuel burn. However, that lower SOG keeps you in adverse current an additional 72 nm which results in an additional 410 gallons. Hey, what are ya gonna do except steam further north to search out more favorable conditions. What is the speed (or better, the engine RPMs) for maximum endurance on Chochise? Also, by noting you crossed the equator at 108 degrees you were north of the rhumb line. My guess was you went searching for the counter current. This was an exciting voyage, thank you for taking us along.
@DashewOffshore
@DashewOffshore 4 года назад
You've got a good eye for ferreting out detail! We varied our course considerably once we were a couple of days east of the Marquesas islands, first working north of the great circle (which does not help much in low latitudes), and then doing a bit of chasing. The counter current is not well defined, so a fair amount of intuition and guesswork is required. We had current against us of as much as 3.5 knots - very depressing - and occasionally of a couple of knots helping. The height of the Matrix deck helped in checking the sea state at a mile or more and this was our best clue as to which way to head. As to the optimum speed for max range, this is around a SLR of 1.05, or 9.6 knots. However, going slow means more boat motion as both dynamic stability and that of the active stabilizer fins are helped enormously by speed. We typically never cruise at less than a through the water speed of 10 knots, and most often we settle in at 10.5 knots. For the Leg to Panama we actually ran at 11 knots STW which netted roughly ten knots SOG. We were aided the last couple of days by intermittent favorable current and following breezes.
@MrLikeke
@MrLikeke 4 года назад
@@DashewOffshore We can always count on you for a rapid reply. Thank you. Actually, my estimate of an additional 72 nm was in error for it does not account for the retard of advancement by the adverse current. Somewhat immaterial but I have a need to be precise. And yes, I didn't think great circle would be too much of a factor at those lats. I absolutely understanding about speed and dynamic motion. While an optimal design may seem impossible, your designs have come as close to the mark as ever. Plus, the astounding level of comfort which is a huge factor on passages. Question: with respect to the FPB, what could you do to increase the SLR ratio? Thanks again.
