Favorite part of being a PT:
Meeting people, especially the patients. We learn much more from the patients than the teachers. Get to know patients as people not look at them as a shoulder or knee.
Current challenges of PT in the US:
Insurance and reimbursement issues put constraints on performing what we’ve been trained and do them well in the clinic. Massive loans of younger physical therapists.
Average of 5 people you surround yourself with:
Her mom. Shirley Sahrmann. Vladimir Janda. Carl Lewitt. Pavel Kolar.
Ideal qualities that make excellent PT:
Teachabiliity and humility. Kindness and empathy.
You can’t just have kindness and empathy and have no idea what you’re doing. Be a good listener. Be good at connecting with patients. You need to earn their trust before you can speak into the situation.
Importance of residency / fellowship programs:
Accelerated growth because you are being challenged with your thinking. Accountability from the mentor makes you want to step up because mentor is watching over your shoulders. We can Google any knowledge nowadays. But can you translate that knowledge to your hands / to your eyes? That is an art.
Don't be afraid to say "I don't know."
Start of Movement Links:
A former resident challenged her to integrate everything she knows. We celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Movement Links this year.
Favorite motto:
Live, love, and laugh.
If you lose, you lose! Live and learn from the losses.
Authors and books:
Henri Nouwen
The Sports Gene by David Epstein
Grit by Angela Duckworth
