I love that they didn't get together at the end, because in my opinion a true love, and a pure love, is letting your loved one be happy even if it's not with you, it's so sad, but it's beautiful
Well, she did that in the end Maybe I'm the beggining she was sellfish but it's really difficult to accept that our best friend doesn't love you back. By the end she accepted the fact and continue.

I just saw this movie for the first time. A coincidence JR's character was named Juliann. I just buried the love of my life, Juliann, of 57 years. Our song was "The way you look tonight" (by the Jaguars). When they started to play this song I really lost it. I couldn't believe the two coincidences. Juliann, love you forever.
except I bet your lovely Julianne wasn't (like Cameron Diaz) one of Arod's pigs. Ruins her for me. Still love this movie; but Arod kind of has ruined both Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson for me!
But this one is really good.. It really touches your heartstrings. Some scenes are really emotional, with good taste. Great rom-com, one of the best, but sad at the same time.
That AMAZING exchange of looks between Jules and Michael @ 1:18-1:23, him saying "you're letting me go?" and hers saying, "yes, I love you, so I'm letting you go." Gah, so brilliantly done.
Makes me so sad! I really hoped they would be together. Michael was hoping jules would confess her feelings the whole time but she always held back.. I love this movie it was brilliant
This scene always gets to me. :'[ If you love someone, you need to see them happy, if they don't love you back the best thing to do is to set them free and let them be happy, even if it's not with you. It hurts, but it's a selfless act that will be repaid later on in life. Life goes on.
Did you just see their eyes? The sadness in just one look between them and then the bride's tender smile, god that was a heartbreaking scene. Such good acting! Amazing talent.
I adore this scene, it's my favorite scene of the movie. So exquisitely acted by the 3 of them. It moves me deeply how Michael and Julianne look at each other knowing the meaning of that song being gifted (loaned) and how Michael hyperventilates a bit... I almost can feel his feelings although I know it's just acting, that's what great acting feels like.
This was THE MOST heartbreaking scene eve. She gave THEIR song to Michael and the love of his life. The fact that she gave the last thing that could’ve connected them, just shows how much she actually loved him

This movie is timeless!!! Takes a certain level of maturity to really understand how deep this movie is....hands down one of my absolute favorites!!!!! From start to finish, i felt every bit of it!!!!
The sad truth of life...just because you love someone doesn't guarantee or mean they feel the exact same and that when you let the moment pass it will never come back. Maybe if she would have confessed 9 years earlier it would have been different. In the end she learned her lesson and became a better person :')really sad but..life isn't always a happy ending.

I think the moment at 1:20 Michael realises Jules is ready to let him go and the song is her way of saying goodbye. Then when he looks at Kimmy, it's obvious, Michael's new best friend will forever be his wife. To me this ending is so beautiful.

Back when I used to watch this as a kid, I loved the movie but always hated the ending because she didn't get the man. Watching it now, it makes me so happy that they ended the movie this way. "The world is just as it should be" What a beautiful portrayal.
I love the expression in his face it's just all love and he was starstruck that she'd do that. And the scene where they went off on the honey moon and she tried to catch them, but he appeared right in front of her in the crowd of people and said Goodbye. Oh my goddddddddddd
I love this movie and this rendition of this song is my favorite. I always rooted for Julia's character but the ending to this movie was actually kind of perfect in bittersweet way.
Who would have thought it's been 23 years since this epic film released. I was 13 then I never felt anything special maybe I was too young to appreciate this. Until today, my tear couldn't stop dripping maybe cause I learned from the heartaches and pains.
the most heartbreaking but selfless scene in the whole movie. i have loved "my bestfriend's wedding" since i saw it back in 1998. fast forward to 2009, "the way you look tonight" was also the 1st dance i had with my husband but i had a happy ending: i married my bestfriend whose name is also coincidentally, "michael." =)
Yes, the bride's two cousins from Tennessee were real characters throughout the movie, but their rendition of "The Way You Look Tonight" at the wedding reception was perfectly beautiful. A very pleasant surprise there at the end.
I had something like this. My ex was my bestfriend and after the relationship we still became friends. He had a girlfriend before me and i was okay about it i was happy for him. We were still talking and seeing each other but nothing ever happened between it was just pure friendship. When he told me that he will propose to her by Summer, i was so hurt and in pain idk why but it hurts alot maybe because i was thinking that the love of my life will be gone forever. But i told him i was happy for them. The look on Julia's face that pain but there was acceptance i can relate to her it was a bittersweet goodbye but one can only believe that there are beautiful beginnings. I hope that everyone who is going through what i've been through will also find their peace and acceptance. It's hard seeing the one you love love someone else the way you loved them but it's okay. My advice is never stop giving love, never hold back because love is the greatest feeling in life yes there will be pain yes there will be heartbreak but never allow that to be the reason to never love again.
I had a similar experience also, except I broke up with the girl for my immature reasons because at the time i had a few girlfriends and took her for granted and when she met somebody else I was still her friend and attended her wedding but when some of our favorite songs were playing at the wedding, I felt like the guy in the movie The Graduate trying to stop the wedding but of course I just smiled and gave her away with my heart broken.
I feel like a reason why you can’t be upset with the ending is that Kimmy really is wonderful and doesn’t deserve getting her heart broken just for the sake that Jules and Michael were comfortable best friends. It sucks to be in Jules shoes but she really did get too comfortable with the expectation that Michael wouldn’t find someone. He moved on and the opportunity passed her by like they mention in the boat scene.
Her speech, her acting, her teary eyes, it's all perfect. I liked how they didn't make her character end up with George. Like George said, "there won't be marriage, there won't be sex but by God there will be dancing". Sometime in life you won't get the guy but you will be left with the best gay friend. ❤️
while i didn't like anything Jules did to "win" Michael back, i can definitely understand the bittersweet goodbye of a love you missed out on. it absolutely hurt to see them both shed a tear and shakily stare at each other but it isn't the end and that's where it's beautiful.
Only the lord knows the pain of letting someone go that you have a bond with .everyday it's a constant memory of the sparkle in their eyes .I still remember his eyes as the most beautiful eyes I seen
I saw this movie for the first time,sometime around 2004,and I can't count the number of times I have watched it since then. I remember it vividly because I was in a situation likes Jules' around that time. It gave me the courage to actually let go. One of the scenes that gave me a turning point was where Micheal was running after Kim and Jules was running after Micheal. That was when she found Jules kissing Micheal. The other guy asked her on the phone, Micheal is running after Kim,you are running after Micheal,who is running after you? It dawned on me heavily that there's no point fighting a lost cause. What will be will definitely be.
I've seen this movie many times. If you love someone tell them right then and there. Otherwise the time will pass on. She had that moment with him on the boat and let it pass her by. In the end she let him go amd realized it was too late. Thats the way life works unfortunately.
Julia’s acting was superb here. The way she looked at him at 1:23 was enough to tell that she’s letting him go already. No dialogue was needed. With her eyes, she bid her goodbye to him.
Time is the best healer for a wounded heart! Letting go is hard to do, but later on you'll be glad you did it. Letting Go opens the door for a new love to come into your life. So move on with your life now!!!

I noticed women sometimes do not see what they have in front of them until another woman falls in love with them. If she truly loved him she would of told him so. I am glad that he married his fiance' because she had the braveness to tell him she loved him when she felt it. In the end he married the better woman who recognized his good qualities and who physically wanted him in the first place.

This one of my favorite movie. My favorite parts of this movie are the intro and outro songs, I so love it. The intro was just so cute and captivating while the last outro The way You Look Tonight was just so sweet, that gives you the aww feeling
I love this song, its a great heart dealing process when you've got a friend of the opposite sex and he or she has married someone else when YOU thought it would be you.
Jules didn't deserve him. Michael was in the palm of her hand at the boat tour but she was more worried about eliminating Kim than telling Michael she loves him. When they were outside the office she wanted to go all the way upstairs to find the email when what she wanted was right in front of her! Kim was actually more mature and brave than she was. Jules kept putting down his job and projecting that view on Kim, and at the start of the movie she was very haughty about his obsession with her...even intentionally missing his calls. She could've acted on it anytime but she didn't. Kim was imperfect but honest about her insecurities, actually fought past them to befriend her and compromised her future for Michael. She admitted her faults and was vulnerable to him completely. I'm glad they didn't try to paint her as a villain to justify Jules' actions
Yeah, agree; that's part of what makes this movie feel so real, that the characters weren't simple 2D humanoid-tropes instead of realistic people. Also what kinda makes this a romantic-tragedy, imo, since the implication from the nicely nuanced performances is that no one besides Kimmy actually faced their inward doubts and true feelings before the final scene(s) which... tbh... is why I feel like the marriage won't last. Because Michael is still conflicted, and Jules is still impulsively not considering his pov (although she probably was sincerely trying to be a better person in the final scene). I can see Michael, never having really gotten over his ex *before* his wedding, cheating on Kimmy with Jules, who tries to be better but has a weak moment and then she feels horrendous and is actually the one who tells the truth to Kimmy.
One of my favourites films ,love the scene in the restaurant where they sing say a little prayer (not sure that's the right title )and where Rupert Everett rings Julia Roberts at the end and they dance.pure joy and lots of tears too

This is not a traditionally sad movie. But I have never cried so much at a movie. I love someone, who is with someone else. And I never said anything when I had the chance. But I still love her to all the pieces of my heart. Grander than The Opera House, and more beautiful than anything sung there. I will stand with her forever, just to watch the eons go. And if that is from the sidelines, I will be all and only there. But damn... I love her so much.
Julia Roberts’ character was the villain of this movie but… she didn’t win. And I’m glad this is one of those RomComs that turned the heroine trope on its head.

When he stood up to dance, i thought he will go to julianne and kiss her and my heart broke when he held kimmi's hand. I mean the way he looks at julianne with such adoration and love,i hoped with all my heart he will go with her,chose her,marry her.. 😭 tbh this movie is one of my all time fav simply bc it's so realistic and genuine
