An outbreak of severe thunderstorms occurred on this day, with a total of 28 tornadoes in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Twenty-three of the tornadoes were rated F0 and five rated F1.
The Weather Channel's first severe weather expert, Fred Ostby appears in this video. Prior to coming to TWC, he was the director of the National Severe Storms Forecast Center from 1980 to 1995. He only appeared during the spring of 1997.
Jeanetta Jones, Bill Keneely, Kim Perez (Cunningham), Mike Bono, Dave Schwartz, and Mike Seidel make appearances.

Fred Ostby was at TWC at the time of the Jarrell, Texas F5 tornado, which would occur less than a month after this.

I think Fred Ostby was director of the NSSFC before 1980. He was director at the time of "Terrible Tuesday", the Wichita Falls, Texas tornado of April 10, 1979. I heard that he passed away a few years ago.

I was going by the timeline on the SPC website. Allen Pearson should of been the director in 1979.

@@hookecho80 I have the documentary "Terrible Tuesday" on a VHS tape and it said he's the director but the documentary had to have been made AFTER that tornado event.
