OMG! I used to listen to this song a couple of years ago, really loved it, but it somehow slipped out of my life. Just today it suddenly popped in my head. The feeling popped in my head. I could'nt remember the words, the band, the nam of the song. All I remembered wa the melody of the chorus, and the video, well the feeling it gave me, sad, cold, beautiful. So I sat for an hour at least, couldn't get it out of my head. The I remembered something like ''way it was, way it should be, would be, was meant to be'', I tried a million combinations, I was pissed, stressed and frustrated!! But then on one of my search engines the fraise ''way it is'' showed me ''The Weather Station''. I screamed from joy. Listened to this song for ten times in a row, saved it everywhere, I could possibly save it. I will never forget it again. This is too special to give up on, too special to forget. Thanks the creators for this amazing piece of art.
You looked small in your coat, one hand up on the window, So long now you'd been lost in thought. No snow on the road - we'd been lucky, And it looked like we would be well past Orléans And past Montmagny, the road giving way to river The frozen Saint Lawrence white and blue. We went out on the ice, and I turned back to you, a figur Distant and small in the long view. Was it a look in your eye? I wasn't sure. The way it is and the way it could be - both are. We got back in the car. You always tell me the truth, Even when it hurts me or it hurts you. Could you go a little easy - would it kill you? Living out the dream, out on the road now for a couple weeks. So intimate with all that we had wanted. All that we hoped for and all that we dreamed - The way it is and the way it could be. But how long is it going to go on? I'm gonna count on - I'm gonna hold out for nothing much. A little kindness, a little praise some days. I get so close, but I don't really touch - What I get, or what I need - The way it is and the way it could be. Two brown dogs came out running cross the highway, Panting and low to the ground. And then they were gone; For a moment, I had run them down. I closed and opened my eyes. They were running up the hill on the other side. The way it is and the way it could be - both are.
I think Tamara Lindeman has a great facility of making wider points from personal stories. These lyrics are great. She must understand Judge John Hodgman's maxim that specificity is the soul of narrative
So Beautiful! Does anyone else hear Gordon Lightfoot in Tamara's Work? Maybe the quality of the guitar, or the cadence of her voice? Whatever it is, it gets me every time! Some early Beth Orton influence as well. Love it, love it, love it!
I love this time and think it’s among the best written in the last 20 years. The child focus in the video caught me by surprise because I’ve always heard this as pure and wistful love song with Tamara singing about another person in the band. It resonates on multiple levels, including as an ode to Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle! Seriously, the way it is and the way 3:43 it could be both are
