Marriage is one of the big and main events of one's life. In Hindu culture marriage is like a festival. Everything will be going according to cultures which we followed since ages. Every part of the marriage has its own importance. From the purchasing of new clothes to the end of the wedding we do follow the "Muhurth" means the Holy and perfect time.
I wouldnt call them rituals. The half naked man sitting and reciting the ancient sanskrit hymns outloud and instructing everyone there on the dias..asking them to make promises that they will stick together thru thick and thin ...is the main marriage..rest of it is a celebration of marriage. Just like the pastor reads out from the bible for the bride and bridegroom take vows and exchange rings and kiss is the main marriage.

You cant just say in one answer . WORLD has a history. Many things have happened , most of them are forced by outsiders . Now INDIA is free . People have freedom and equality to do what ever they want , but I will qualify this by saying - you can do what you want , but it must be good, right thing , not hurting others, equality based from all sides. There is no country like INDIA on this earth . Most open society, most liberal, most equality oriented and most democratic, most nonviolent, most peace loving. It is happening in thousands across in INDIA, you may not be knowing. But at the same time , you can not do a thing just for the sake of doing . Level playing field is necessary . Common characters and common culture also helps to be stable, to understand and to be helpful to each other. Suppose if you are a vegetarian and your wife demands every day meat eating - and you do not like killing animals and eating them , then how do you feel ? If you are alcohol/beer lover and cant pass an hour without drinking , then how will your wife will take it ? if she is teetotaler ? and many more examples can be given . SO it is necessary , first to see the compatibility , after all you want your marriage to succeed .
