40+ years of "doing tanks" here and same. Why did they bother, because nobody used chemical weapons ? IIRC the only chemical weapons incident was when German bombers sank a US transport ship in Bari which happened to have some mustard gas (???) arty shells on board.

@lysanderkrieg5474
@lysanderkrieg5474 5 месяцев назад
The leaf spring suspension system of the pz IV was because the original design was meant to be fulfilled by companies that had railroad car experience. The F2, was an interim change between the F and G and no official documentation refers to an F2. It was basicly a late production F factory fitted with the ausf. G gun that had become available before the ausf F was phased out of production. A simpler description of barrel length would have been to use the term calibres. And, Jason, as a former armour man, you should have known this. The panzer IV was NEVER meant to be the MBT of the panzerwaffe, however, the larger turret ring allowed for the longer calibre, higher velocity gun to be fitted where as the panzer III was maxed out at 50mm (effective) combat use. Yes, Pz III ausf N did mount the l24 75mm but that was a serious strain on the turret ring (upon firing as well as armour weight upgrade limitations) was deemed by the waffenamt as no longer viable.
@dnocturn84
@dnocturn84 5 месяцев назад
It wasn't just the larger turret ring. Pzkpfw III and IV had similar sized turret rings and changing their diameter wasn't a problem. But Pzkpfw IV was also designed for more weight and potentially higher armor levels than the 3. And the larger gun means significantly more weight. This is why they actually switched to the IV.
@kimjanek646
@kimjanek646 Месяц назад
@@dnocturn84 Turret ring diamter on the Pz III is 1530mm compared to 1600mm on the Pz IV. The long 75mm barely fits inside the Pz IV so there was simply no way to effectively mount the long 75mm in the Pz III without major changes. Since they needed tanks with effective AT guns the Pz III was simply faced out when the Panther become available, with the Pz IV only being kept in production because they couldn't afford to stop producing it.
@dnocturn84
@dnocturn84 Месяц назад
@@kimjanek646 Agreed and I am aware. But the Ausführung K of the Pzkpfw III and the Ausführung N used Pzkpfw IV turrets, as far as I know. There was a limitied production run of a few Ausführung K (not the later produced command version with the same name), with a long barreled 7,5cm KwK (the one of the Pzkpfw IV Ausführung F2) in a normal Pzkpfw IV turret. Same happened with the N Version, where a F1 turret was paired with a Pzkpfw III hull. Those weren't original PzIII turrets with these guns, they were supposingly straight PzIV turrets. So it was possible to equip the Pzkpfw III with these more powerful guns in general. Surely, the tank gained too much weight and had to face a number of issues with this solution though. But it was a decission to not equip the Pzkpfw III with these guns and not neccessarly a limitation. The StuG III already provided a powerful and cheaper alternative to throw a long barreled 7,5cm gun on the battlefield, in an anti-tank role amongst other possible roles and the production capacity of PzIV, V and VI was prefered. The Pzkpfw III continued to fill a gap of much needed tanks in the meantime. And its 5cm gun was accepted to serve in this role.
