Update in 2024 - Here's a first look at our next project!: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aSEqDLgzPxI.html Wow - it's hard to believe we made this film nearly a decade ago (as of 2022). Putting it on RU-vid has been a great experience. To be able to share it with the world, and receive so much feedback - we can't thank you all enough. We read almost all of the comments, and really appreciate them - both the encouraging and the critical. This was a student film, and we certainly put our backs behind making the best thing we could with what we had. It was an incredible experience. And we're using everything we learned to help inform our next projects. If you want to dig in a little more, feel free to check out our behind the scenes of "The Weight:" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2UkGGJGN1T4.html. As well as the trailer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-umEYiRfEYPc.html Once again, thank you all for taking the time!
I have one question: WHERE IS PART 2??? From the characters to the plot this was absolute GOLD. I had all sorts of scenarios in my head for what occurs after he pulled the trigger...I literally yelled out NO when the screen went dark and credits rolled. Scared my cat! LOL
Very good. Those red-rimmed eyes were still tinged with remorse. Nobody else was going to put this mad dog down. The drunkard killed the sheriff in a rage. This man tried to ignore the taunts, to let it go. When it got serious, he finished it. This wasn't a line up and fire gunfight. He just ended it. I was pleasantly shocked. The "reload" was wrong, but the "Weight" that the protagonist carried was real.
I took martial arts a lot of years ago. The Chinese master told me that the fights that go on and on in films is for show. I real life, if one can end it, you end it asap on the first opportunity. Nothing fancy, but highly effective and successful survival rate that way.
The look on his grandfather's face was about the same as when I got my papers to go for my pre-induction physical during Viet Nam. Dad has been decorated soldier in the South Pacific and at the time I had no idea what the look on his face meant.....I do now. I lost 5 buddies in that hell hole. There are some of us still fighting that war....... Despite some inaccuracies in the film (loading the gun, etc) the upload has a lot to say. Dad's gone by I still have his Dvorak music collection.
I love the ending to this film. Most films would just have a Stereotypical duel but this one just shows you how something probably would have gone down.
This is a well done western short with little or no budget, I am guessing, and I never get the twits who insult and pick on details that they happen to have knowledge of. There is no dept. of continuity to watch over these things, and if there were, would not pay for a prop that .0001% of people would catch, so ease off and thank these people for their work so you can enjoy these shorts.
Hey, thank you Elix! You're spot on - we did the best we could with the limited resources we had. That said, we appreciate all comments - positive or negative. It all helps us get better. Thanks again.
The costuming is cliché "Western." Women's looks *nothing* like the late 1860s or 1870s this supposedly depicts... Men's is closer, but looks ordered off-the-rack from cheap western costume suppliers.... The lawman's hat is just offensive in a 20th century Tom Mix style. And the gun leather is generally later in style.
Good little short packed a good story in a short time. Sheriff was great in that talk, sadly most of them died at the hands of people they knew in a drunken stupor then by evil Outlaws. The ending was fabulous because that's the way you do it you don't talk about it you don't grandstand and you for sure don't give the other person time to kill you.
That war was over some 155 years ago, but some people are still fighting it, guess they will be fighting it until Jesus comes back. Very good video. These short westers are starting to be a habit with me
The funny part is that all the polite people stopped fighting it way back when. Im way out west where no one ever approved of the bullshit. Most of my people came over in the twenties. The other were northern and never approved of the bullshit. White don't make me right, but it shouldn't make me wrong either. Funny part is I'm not even white.
@@pizzadude6615 agreeD. we all have issues. i'm a white southerner conservative and i don't approve of the bs either. all of the white folks i know don't either, but the liberal panty waste media would have you believe all whites are racist. I'll stand with my black brothers any day of the week and fight injustice and racism......AS A WHITE CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN. All of my friends would too. I suspect most white folks would too. Most people are decent folks that the fringe elements keep stirred up at each other. Take out the fringe extremists and politicians and the world would live in harmony.
@tbone9347 I am a non racist white Liberal who lives in the north but most of my family is in the south and you are full of crap about southerners not being racist. There are sundown towns all over the south and they will brag about it openly. And for that matter 99% of conservatives are racist either toward black people or asian people and blatantly against mexican people. If you are not a white christian with the same hateful beliefs as conservatives especially southern conservatives then they despise you even if you are white which you illustrated yourself by denigrating white liberals the way you did. If you think that way about your fellow whites I can only imagine how you truly feel about everyone with a different skin color or who worship a different imaginary god and I say imaginary because there is no god of any religion. Your comment proves that you view people who do not agree with you as lower than you and if you look down on and debase people on that slight of a difference then there is no doubt that skin color and religion makes a huge difference on how you look at and treat those people which is absolutely being a racist. Going on a youtube comment and swearing not to be racist while spewing hate speech against a group of people who think a little bit differently doesn't do well for your argument. If you feel compelled to go on a rant like that about not being racist then you sir are absolutely a racist. The fact that you support a political party who is led by a diaper wearing, treasonous, lying, lifelong criminal, rapist, piece of crap racist says everything. Your cult leader hates black people and has been documented using the "N" word multiple times over the years and even paid for a full page advertisement calling for the execution of the "central park five" even after dna evidence cleared them of the crime but he said since they were black they were guilty of something. The flatulent fascist also spews hatred and incites violence against muslims, mexicans, and asians making him the very epitome of a racist. Just because you keep repeating something over and over and over does not make it true so you need to come to terms with the fact that you are a racist and you support an extremely racist political party. The only people I have animosity toward are the very stupid among us who keep voting for fascist loving, racist, republican traitors and religious lying hypocrites who claim they are religious but then do the exact opposite of what religion says they should do. I have read the bible and nowhere in it is there even a single sentence saying to give the rich more money while poor people live in the streets and starve but the only things republicans ever do is give tax cuts to the rich which requires cutting funding from programs that help the poor, and cutting rules and regulations so rich people make more money which leads to poor people being exposed to harmful substances and less safety regulations which in turn leads to poor people getting cancer or killed in the workplace. If there were a god he would hate what religion has become and he would hate republicans even more. In order to be a better person you must first realize the lies you tell yourself to condone your beliefs and actions.
From the clothing, to the acting, to the cool setting, to the believable acting, to the simple plot that's executed with depth ... And I really liked that his granddad seemed like a hard man at first, but whose caring side was shown -- very era and character appropriate not to be emotionally soft at such a time. Great ending. It was such a relief not to have a drawn out and unnecessary showdown.
I even understood the bad guy "in our bar, in our town." You get his anguish that they fought against such people, who killed their kin, and now they're told to go about as if it didn't happen. It messed him up.
The pacing kept the viewer invested start to finish. How the young man went from uncertain and green, to resigned to the work at hand, was well done. There was not just one sympathetic character. All had an understandable point.
Thank you, Kelvin! We made this as a student film with a very limited budget. We've certainly dreamed of what we could do with this story if we had studio backing.
Been seven years and I doubt you'll see this but that was very well done. Short and to the point. From farm boy to an experienced gunman. And the portrayal of the killing was spot on. Very few Hollywood style gunfights happened.
One of the best short films I have watched, but being a cowboy action shooter and using the Colt Walker and the 51 you really need to attend a match and watch what these guns produce in smoke and fire. If you are going to use cap and ball revolvers make damn sure you put come caps on those nipples, that shows up like a really bad line. The costuming is a lot better than most, and the watch scene is a good touch.
The acting improved with each actors interaction, some points of authenticity were missed. But in all I watched it twice, and unlike the Gladiator I was entertained....
Westerns always have blacksmiths beating on cold iron. "Reloaded" by pouring powder down an empty cylinder and then no ball or cap. I did like the shootout. No BS. As Tuco put it "when you have to shoot...Shoot! Don't talk."
And no caps on the nipples as he checked to see if it was loaded...capped.??? ...Well what ever he was checking lol. But did enjoy the concept One more thing was missing, all the smoke from the black powder
@@stephenofarrell3827 So, it shouldn't have to be realistic? There can be obvious errors even to the untrained eye? Don't think so. The obvious errors regarding loading the gun could have been corrected with very little effort.
Grandpa would have been a veteran of the Mexican American War. That Colt 1st Model Dragoon fits perfectly in this time frame. Thank you for not making it a Colt Single Action Army.
Detail missed by tech adviser: Blacksmiths do not pound on cold steel or iron. Get that shoe glowin' . Even if you have to fake it by heatin' it up with a torch! Good job .Looks an' feels real western.
Liked it, but as the man said, though some red paint seems to be added to the horseshoe, would not have been pounding it against a wooden block. If actually glowing red, would have started on fire, use an anvil. Ending was spot on. "When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk" (Tuco Ramirez).
Plenty of technical errors but I have fit shoes to a few horses and cold shoeing is not uncommon. Forming against a soft backing surface is also sometimes used. I will agree however that as a back drop for dialogue it is better to go with what is the normally accepted routine.
The poignant points were perfectly put. I always feel sorry for the broken hearted sadness of the ladies when men behave like idiots, murdering each other over trivialities. As my college commander in the military stated: “Beware the Demon Alcohol - it’s ruined more careers and lives than.....”
Yes. And here we are seven years later on the edge of those decisions, the ones you dont get a choice about. We always have the hard choice as individuals but seldom as a nation.
Yes this was really good the 15 minutes of length worked out where you get a quick monologue then we see what started his transformation from inocent farm boy to a highly trained killer.
Dvorak Symphony 9 ‘Largo’ on guitar. Great little movie ... glaring reload error aside. The duel at the end was particularly satisfying and appropriate.
I enjoyed the film as the personal conflicts that ensued after the war are little covered . Not every sheriff was an Earp who was noted for using his firearms as clubs. The target practice scene were Grandpa had the boy reload and he just poured some powder in the cylinder without ramming a lead ball home, or even rotating it into the next up position hurt my feelings as a Western movie fan. A little attention to detail go's along way, or I could just watch old RKO stuff and really flip out. Good times though keep at it.
Grandpa might've been crazy enough to hammer a stone-cold horseshoe, but he sure taught him to load and prime black powder faster than I've ever seen it done.
I mount all my horses from either side. Never know when you might end up on a downhill side...that’s a bitch to climb up, and you can pull a horse over on you. Doing back country stuff, I expect my horses to stand quietly no matter what I’m doing. Too dangerous otherwise, and I don’t heal for shit anymore...
Definitely no Ohio 1863. And the sheriff's pistol , he had to do some time traveling to get an 1870 Smith and Wesson . But what you guys did with the production is miles ahead of me. Just remember , fans are always look for or notice when something is out of place. It's just fun finding easter eggs. Good job guys. I used to work with a Marcotte guy 40 odd years ago.
Very well done. Made like how a western has to be made like the old movies Once upon a time in the west, For a few dollars more, The good, the bad, the ugly, The outlaw Josey Wales.
Amazing Film! Perfect camera work, Excellent acting and tone... DEFINITELY left me wanting more :-) Would surely pay to see this as a subscription based web-series....
