Learning to keep a notebook is useful. But the issue is that people try to do some extremely pretty, high maintenance stuff rather than staying simple. I use a bullet journal and made a habit of taking it out during my work break, which is the only reason I kept it up. It's minimalist and rough, it gets the job done. But I still dropped off after taking a month's holiday and only just started up again about eight months later. The good thing about a bullet journal is its forgiving, and you can absolutely pick up as you need to without leaving hundreds of blank pages of shame.

Solid Video. I also feel really old because I totally remember Merlin Mann, the internet blog/productivity scene back then, and absolutely carrying a hipster pda for a couple of years.

I love how you go against the grain. So many people just repackage centuries old ideas and act as if they're new and brilliant for habit-tracking and taking daily notes, and it's a disservice to their function as a tool. All it does is set people up for failure when a $40 journal isn't the panacea for all their life's problems.

I’ve been using index cards with a binder clip for the last 5-10 years! So so dope, I bring mine with me everywhere!

I used to use those at the time. There was another version where you could layout custom pages and print it out, cut and fold it.

I was alive for it and now that I have been reminded of it, I am going back to the hipster pda. I've been trying all of the other ideas out there and forgot all about this. Thanks for the reminder

I got really into the hipster pda at the time (I was in college) and it was really useful. I also got really into Merlin’s podcast (you look nice today) which was equally formative for me.

Damn the editing and creative camera work! I really love it! Especially the backlit drilling shot. I bet you put over 3 hours work in for a three minute video and it honestly really payed off. Also really liked the flow of your editing. Nice rhythm.

Welcome to the Fold. That was a great time as I’ve gone from paper planners in the 80s to pdas, to the HPDA, and back to my Filofaxes. My question to you is your archival system. Merlin also used David Allen’s Getting Things Done system with the HPDA. So you’re partially incorrect that using the HPDA WILL NOT CHANGE your Life. Thanks for Memory Lane.

Good video. Completely hate you, but good video about a 10-minute piece of internet culture from twenty years ago. One I was an _adult_ for and remember discussions about whether the Hipster PDA or real PDA's were more pretentious. I think it was decided that real PDA and Hipster PDA pretension were inverse of one another, and both depended on how close you were to the center of tech culture. A Hipster PDA being carried by a poet in Kansas was thrifty and smart, but in Silicon Valley it was a cry for attention. This was also around the time people were discussing PDA-related "brain damage". The most popular PDA's were by Palm, which used a little handwriting recognition system instead of a keyboard. You didn't move your hand from left to right while writing on a Palm PDA, you wrote each letter on top of the previous one. People got so used to writing without scanning their arm that you would occasionally see things where someone was writing notes while not looking at them and would look down and there would just be a blob of ink where their hand was sitting. Like all times, the turn of the century was a weird time. So, fuck you for being twenty one, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for a decent reminder of tech culture past.
